Fantasy Dungeons & dragons movie discussion

Just base it on the ****ing cartoon. I'd be fine with that.

That’s cute, my friends and I have been getting into it recently and we always have a ball. This might be fun if they do it right. Wonder if Jeremy irons will come back?

The half full glass point of view : it could not be worst than the original movie ( that I saw in theater mind you ).

Regardless of chances of it not being trash, I'm always for more fantasy.

Well, if any of what I said is repeated, I apologize(didn't feel like reading thru 10 pages) however, if you're really making the writers who penned the scripts for Horrible Bosses and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone lay down the groundwork, I have to simply ask.....WTF? Is this a comedy?
I mean I know they are profesional writers but....shouldnt someone who has a passion for it or at least has written something similar be chosen?

unless they're doing an adaptation of the 80s cartoon.

I can't say what D&D fans actually want the movie to be, but gamers being put into the game is in its own way a pretty source accurate approach. Comedy's the only way that sort of meta approach would be taken with a mainstream film, and it's not like Dungeons & Dragon players are always deadly serious. So it would make a certain amount of sense, and from my not really a D&D player, never having read the associated novels position it's more immediately interesting than a general fantasy movie. And I liked Game Night, so there's that.

Yep, I can see for this more like a Jumanji approach than something like Lord of the Rings or GoT

Well, I guess I am in the minority , possibly whoever is responsible for bringing D&D to the screen (I'm guessing Paramount) don't want to go serious fanatsy route ala Game of Thrones or LOTR, and don't want to compete with them, so opting for a comedy setting? I think that could be a mistake, jut my opinion. It seems the audience is hungry for serious fantasy series just because they are swallowing up Game of Thrones ,LOTR, the Witcher, etc.

So why not give us that instead of experimenting? I mean I have no idea if Paramount is doing any of that ,but hiring comedy writers to me doesnt make me think they are going with a serious tone for the movie. Again, I could be wrong.

Witcher was „swallowed up“?

You know what D&D has that Game of Thrones, LOTR or Witcher don't? Dark Elves aka Drow. And bringing Drizzt's saga to TV or movies would be pretty damn awesome. I'd be fine with a classic fantasy, without any experiments with tone.

This thread is bumped and it makes me want to replay Baldur's Gate saga.

I love Dark Elves so I would definitely be in favour of them getting heavily featured.

Me too. For example I think the next company to adapt Drizzt will probably have the next Witcher style success on their hands

Um achsually almost all the elves we see in LOTR are “Dark Elves.”

Despite mixed reviews, The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill, proved to be a major ratings success for Netflix.
In the streaming company’s latest letter to the shareholders, released on Tuesday, Netflix put the fantasy series on track to become its “biggest season 1 TV series ever.” The entire first batch of episodes dropped on Dec. 20 and within its first four weeks, drew in 76 million member households, according to Netflix.

I say we launch entire franchises based on D&D-exclusive creatures. I for one am still shopping around my script for Rusty the Rust Monster Saves Christmas (rated hard R).

If you guys want a D&D show watch Goblin Slayer. The author is a huge fan of tabletop RPGs and basically used the D&D format as the backbone of his story.

In one volume, he fights a Dark Elf. In another one, he fights a Beholder. Everything's sort of been changed to avoid copyright lawsuits, but it's basically a fantasy story that incorporated tabletop rules, tropes, and ideas into its universe. Heavily "inspired" by D&D.

Well, I for one, hope if it ever gets into the serious stage of development, whatever studio it is, doesn't just half ass it rolling the dice with a underdeveloped plot, poor CGI & horrible casting just to make a buck.

Like Witcher. :(

Some people enjoy it more than I do. I'm probably a minority in this case. But to me it looked exactly how you described - underdeveloped plot, poor CGI, bad casting (Geralt, Triss). Felt like a rush job to book Game of Thrones' place.

Well I have to admit, I have not sat down to watch a single episode myself.
So I will take your word for it.
I was shocked the numbers in terms of ratings it did according to Netflix.
