Fantasy Dungeons & dragons movie discussion

I mean, you are using the lore to make a story, just like in a session. Its not a set story with different paths like in a video game, it is a bunch of tools to make your own story. I mean, it does look like someone's campaign.

But that's the point. A movie is inherently not your story. The key aspect of any TTRPG is that the only limit is yourr imagination. Everything is yours. The characters, the choices. You have unlimited freedom. Its why a movie won't work. Why take a medium of player agency and take away thay central point?

Of course this also ties in with a lot of my criticism of "medium-mixture", in which video games are becoming less like games and more like movies.

The entire concept of storytelling is about consuming other people's stories. The fact that streaming RPG groups is a very popular genre at the moment goes against what you are saying. Everything I've seen is that the Legend of Vox Machina is a success.

Still looking fun, even if the company is in a bit of a face saving mode.

Yeah, the release of this trailer just screams “ignore the behind-the-scenes drama from our terrible business practices, please go see our film so we can still make money”. At the same time, this does look like a lot of fun.

I’ve listened to several episodes of different D&D podcast, and the mechanism gag made me chuckle because the actions and dialogue feels like an action a team member would randomly commit during one of those campaigns. Like, the entire party needs to get somewhere or achieve a particular task, and one of them makes a bad dice roll that f**ks over the entire party. Never gets old. :funny:

This looks like such a fun date movie. Really hope this works out

This looks like a ton of fun. I hope it’s actually good.

That was great. Definitely the vibe I was expecting from this film. You can definitely telll this was written by people who have played D&D a lot, because I’ve seen quite a few videos of peoples campaigns that pretty much go and sound like that.

So, I guess all of the naysayers here saying this wasn’t going to be good and D&D doesn’t translate into film are eating a healthy, heaping, helping of crow.

Can’t go to the theater currently, but definitely jumping on this when it’s released on digital/home video. Sounds like a blast!

Yeah, as one of those naysayers, I have to say I’m surprised. But in a good way. I’m glad the film appears to be good and I’ll be checking it out. And who knows? Maybe if the film is a hit, I’ll eventually get my Drizzt Do’Urden movie at some point.

I mean, honestly the trailers have looked good, being the first time that the trailers have looked like something out of an *actual* D&D game. Because, lets be real, no matter how high drama you might aspire, pretty much every D&D game *will* turn into comedy at least half the sessions. Its the nature of impromptu amateur theater.

Also, Edgin the Bard is a player created name if I have ever heard one.

I had the chance of checking this out today.
Just a huge hoot, its the PG-13 version of Game of Thrones i didnt know i needed.
+20 Charisma for the whole cast, an absolute delight.
Ha, glad you liked it. I’ll take PG GoT with a dose of comedy.

NGL I'm here for Hugh Grant's career resurgence. He's had some pretty dang good roles over the past few years.
