E3 2014 - Part 1

Microsoft and Nintendo did the best by far, but Sony definitely had things I liked. But their press conference was way too long, and had a bad structure.

At the end of the day this E3 made me glad I own both a PS4 and XB1.. and also made me decide to go get an WiiU.
After this E3, I will be getting an Xb1 as soon as a I can to go along with my PS4 and Wii U. :yay:

with Zelda and Star Fox coming, I'm definitely more interested in getting a Wii U.

but that will probably be holiday next year, when Zelda actually comes out.

The decision this year is whether I buy an X1 this XMAS ( or sooner ).

as I said as Raven X above, based on their E3 showings alone, PS4 won, for me.

However, I'm still interested in the X1, and the recent price cut, dropping the paywall, and trade in offers has got me very tempted to pick up an X1.

Yeah, Sony needs to drop the friggin' numbers game. It always drags their show down and NO ONE cares. The stupid TV crap too.. NO ONE cares.. The stuff they showed was great but their presentations grew long in the tooth and were just VERY meh..

They really missed Jack Trenton, IMHO.. MS and Nintendo had a better showing than they did.. That's not taking AWAY from Sony.. The games they showed were great. They just friggin' talked too much.

Honestly.. Microsoft talked about nothing but games.. So if you watch their highlights you watched their show. 90 mins of games.

Yeah, I never realized I was going to miss Jack, but I did.

Sony use to make fun of Microsoft and Nintendo for playing the numbers game or talking about how their console did things that didn't involve games. And now, they did both in the same presentation. Very poor. :funny:

Nintendo had a little fat, but that is what I loved about Microsoft and Nintendo's presentations. They flew by as they spent the vast majority of the time showing me games and games they got me excited to play.

Part of me wonders if a bit of ego came back to them.. They can't let that happen. You can't get egotistical because you've sold 7 million units. The X1 dropped in price and obviously 3rd party support is STILL big.. Nintendo has a slew of games coming out that's going to start to turn heads.

Sony's in the lead now but come Christmas? Who knows.. We shall see.

WiiU's show was great actually.. I don't have one but WILL be buying one for open world Legend of Zelda.. if that trailer didn't excite you.. You've outgrown video games. (Not you in particular. Just making a statement.)

oh no, open world Zelda looks great. But one game isn't enough for me to go out and buy a system.

and it's funny, I read some articles saying Sony won E3 because they focused not just on games but on other stuff, whereas MS focused just on games.

contrast that to last year when MS was criticized for NOT focusing enough on games.......

yeah............

last year, I think it was fairly clear that Sony won. but that was more do to MS shooting themselves in the foot.

this year........it's much harder to declare a winner. It really comes down to personal taste. Which means......something for everyone!!

Sony and ego? They go together like pancakes and syrup. :cwink:

I don't think Sony's problems at their press conference has to do with them having an ego, I think it has more to do with the fact that Playstation 4 has been incredibly successful and the rest of Sony is trying hitch a ride on its back.

the period between now and this XMAS will be crucial for MS.

if they can't close the sales gap with Sony ( or even overtake them ), then that means something else is fundamentally wrong with the X1.

It truly is amazing how people will skew their arguments to fit their fanboy vision of the world. :funny:

That doesn't really mean that at all. They have sold a lot of Xb1 already. Not as many consoles as Sony, but a lot. With the price drop, Halo collection and Halo 5 on the horizon, they have plenty to play for.

There's nothing wrong with the XB1 at all.. It's still an EXTREMELY successful system. 5 million units sold (I believe) is nothing to scoff at. Keep in mind before this gen launched MANY were saying consoles were dead and that this console generation was a flop, that it was "too soon" and all sort of crap.

MS's main problem was last year they focused on the wrong thing (Their E3 show last year had a TON of games.. they were just overshadowed by their poor format) and price. That's all gone now.. I know a LOT of people getting an X1 now. All my friends that got a PS4 have said they now have a reason to get an X1. The SDF is out in full force after MS showing yesterday.. Not saying you are part of that (serioulsy, I'm not) but the amount of crap I've seen being talked about MS show yesterday just makes me want to kick people in the face. All I heard last year was "WHERE ARE THE GAMES MS!!!111" This year they show us 90 min of games and fanboys are out in droves "Meh, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING."

Drives me nuts.

well, the 2 biggest barriers that faced the X1 ( imo ) were the $100 premium and the stupid paywall.

both of those have been removed, and now the X1 is pretty much equal to the PS4.

it feels like, NOW the real competition begins. and it's going to come down to games.

I'm one of those who is more likely to get an X1 now. especially if I can take advantage of a good trade in deal like Best Buy is offering this week ( trade in a PS3 slim or 250g 360 and get a min $150 towards the X1 ).

3rd console curse.. Sony tends to be a bit more "dick-ish" with their ego. Nothing.. NOTHING will EVER top "Yes, the PS4 is 600 dollars and you WILL work two jobs to buy it."

I still think MS had a good show last year game wise it was just structured poorly. Always Online was NEVER a big deal (who isn't always online?) and their DRM stuff wasn't awful.. console gamers just aren't ready for that yet.

Honest question... Was the paywall really an issue? Do you not intend to get XBL? The paywall was never an issue for me and I never really understood the issue some had with it. Chances are if you have one or two game consoles.. You're gonna play them online.. I mean, I can't imagine anyone buying an X1 or PS4 to use as a netflix box. I'm fine with the paywall being hone.. But it never bothered me either.

the paywall was an issue for me. can't speak for anyone else.

I don't play much online, although I'm not opposed to paying for Live or PS+.

what I didn't like was that you had to be Gold to use stuff like Youtube and Internet Explorer.

Last week when they dropped the paywall, I was finally able to try out IE and Youtube on my 360. and Holy ****!! IE worked way better than both the PS3 and PS4 browsers. And I could actually use a keyboard with the Youtube App.

that alone was a big motivator for me to consider the X1 more seriously. the fact that I no longer have to pay for Gold to use stuff like IE and Youtube.

so, for me, that added extra functionality for the X1.

and I've said it before, if the X1 had been $100 cheaper, with no paywall, last XMAS, I most likely would have bought an X1 instead of the PS4.

They said that about PS3, not PS4. But I guess "3rd console curse" (God I hate these made up curses) doesn't apply to Sony then?

I agree though that the PS3 presentation was much worse than the Xbox One's and Sony were ***** in their confidence. What I meant is that Sony really isn't alone in that. And that I can't care less about egotistical presentations if the product delivers. Which PS3 did for me (better games), and as both PS4 and Xbox One seem to do.

Watching the live stream, hopefully it will change my mind about SO

Yeah. I meant PS3. My finger just goes to the 4 now. The PS3 was the "third console curse." Sony fell hard from #1 for a while.
