E3 2011 - Part 2

So there wasn't anything outside of the teaser for Colonial Marines, correct?

I think the Wii U is a step in the right direction, but Nintendo needed to jump. I mean the PS3 doubles up as a gaming and Blu-ray player and Nintendo is barely playing catch-up at this point. But aside from the controller, it's not really doing much to standout against the competition.

They're going to have an uphill battle with that controller for hardcore gamers. They'll probably never convince FPS gamers at all with that thing.

I guess the concept of not having to pause the game to look at my inventory, or no need for an onscreen mini-map could be interesting. It's still a dice roll.

The thing is, you guys are assuming that Nintendo needs to catch up and win the hardcore audience. They don't. Despite not appealing to hardcore gamers, the Wii has won this generation's console war, rather convincingly.

Even if this is little more than Wii with graphics that will soon be a generation behind (once Sony and Microsoft launch their new consoles), it will still sell by by the boatload. Through the Wii, Nintendo has rebranded itself as the console that casual gamers want and there is more money in the casual market than the hardcore market. It is why Microsoft's entire conference was devoted to that market.

The Wii U will sell for the same reason Nike sells more shoes than Converse, despite quality of product. Because Wii has made Nintendo that the brand name that the masses will go for.

Point blank, Nintendo creates **** that just LOOKS like fun. MS and Sony tries to make their stuff all edgy and dark and cool and ironically hip, which is what their advertisements always stress, but Nintendo is basically going the amusement park route.

So...I missed the Prototype 2 segment on the YouTube E3...did anyone see it? Was it gameplay?

A buddy of mine that's at E3 (produced the Nintendo show) said that he tried the WiiU and that it is actually pretty darn fun.

Here's his message...

Hey, just so you know, the Wii U plays much better than u think. This is a pretty damn cool system. I will be interested to see what happens, but there is a ton of potential in what I played.

It's funny how people trash FPS like CoD and how much attention those games get, when back in the day, the only real MP FPS around was Goldeneye, and even then more people played because of the multiplayer.

But personally FPS are not my thing and never have been. But I do think they need to do something innovative with them. Heck I have my nephew stay over sometimes and he brings his CoD games from World at War to Modern Warfare and now Black Ops, and I honestly can't tell the difference from them gameplay wise.

You know, now that I think about it, that's not really a word you hear very often anymore with video games; Fun.

I mean, when I think of the great games that I've played like Uncharted or Batman, or even inFamous right now, I don't think I can describe them as fun, but rather entertaining or engaging. But I think that's one thing Nintendo has always managed to do, and that's to make games feel fun.

Maybe on console. Not on pc.

They do have innovative games, you probably just aren't playing them.

Shooting people in a video game and kicking ass and taking names as Batman isn't fun???

I think there are several different ways to describe "fun."

Like... Nintendo first party titles tend to all be FUN. They may not be ground breaking but they are often fun. Playing as Batman and busting skulls can be fun... but more often than not you end up trying to get that "max combo" or whatever... focusing on something else to much to really have fun...

Or at least I'm guilty of that. :p

As impressive as that games looks, I've never heard of it before and of course it's because I'm not a PC gamers. And yes, I meant in terms of consoles.

Ah, but nobody cares about PC. :awesome:
This.

No, it's awesome. :cwink:

There were more people playing Counterstrike than Goldeneye.
In fact, Counterstrike is still one of the most played online FPS to this day, Goldeneye on the other hand has faded into history.

And so when the next generation console does something like this, and console only users are hopping up and down about it, I will be sitting in the corner, grumpy, having seen it 5-10 years ago.

Bingo, and that appeals to the casual gaming market. Therefore, even if Wii U is graphically inferior, casual gamers will still purchase it over the graphically superior PS4 or X-Box 720. Especially due to the fact that when those systems are released, Wii U will be selling for 300 dollars compared to the other two's $500-$700 price points.

Nintendo is using the Wii strategy once again and it will pay off again. And due to the low price point, all of the "hardcore," gamers who ***** about Wii only appealing to the casual market will quit their *****ing and buy Wii U the second that a new Zelda or Mario game comes out.

Does anyone know how much does Nintendo want to get the "hardcore" gamer?

Not much, I'd imagine. Like I said, they don't need to appeal to them. Hardcore gamers will buy the Wii U when a decent Zelda or Mario game drops. Beyond that, Nintendo has just won this generation with casual gamers. Why on Earth would they need more?

Hell I'm gonna get the Wii U based on Smash Bros Alone lol Zelda and Mario will be Pluses lol

I rather play a recycled FPS then a game I have to use a Wii Mote. On the contrary I'm looking forward to what else Nintendo is going to show us with the Wii U but from what they showed it just looks like a Wii with a touch screen controller.

I still need to find out more about their upcoming titles.

The only game that will really sell me is a Pokemon RPG online made by Gamefreak. Chances are slim but if it happens its an instant buy guaranteed.

As of right now I can or can not say if I want a WiiU. I need to see more games for it and I need to see how it looks graphically before I make a decision.

I'm personally tired of games always going the "edgy, dark, cool & hip" route, the mature route. Games don't always have to be dystopian, war-like, gray, and bleak, with blood and badasses all abound, but Sony and Microsoft only knows that route. I'm not hating 100%, I love me my Ninja Gaiden, for instance, but I try to balance all these Halo-esque, Killzone-type games with something else.

Then Nintendo is on the polar opposite spectrum with such a sugary sweet image it sometimes makes me sick.

What I want out of the Wii-U (which I'm skeptical we'll get regardless of what was promised) is a system like the NES and SNES. A system that gives us your Marios and Pokémons, representing one end of the spectrum, your L.A. Noires and Assassin Creeds, the opposite side, and your Mega Mans, Final Fantasies, Resident Evils and Castlevanias, the middle. The prior Nintendo systems of late, save for the handhelds, have never gotten this full range of titles. And when Nintendo does get a hold of a "real" non-Nintendo franchise, its always a watered-down version of the real thing. 360 and PS3 gets SoulCalibur 4? Wii gets SoulCalibur Legends. PS3 & 360 gets Final Fantasy 13 (which sucked)? Wii gets Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for Sony and Microsoft; Castlevania: Judgment for Nintendo.

Now if it was the limitations of the Wii that prevented these kinds of games appearing under Nintendo's system, that shouldn't be an excuse with the Wii-U. And I still fear we wont be getting real PS3/360 quality 3rd-party titles for thw Wii-U.

I'm not sure the U will do as well as the original wii as the casuals already have a motion-control novelty console and I don't think all of them are going to upgrade for better graphics & performance. Nintendo do have a shot at reclaiming some of the hardcore audience though with some of the titles that have been announced but when Sony & Microsoft come in with new consoles I can't see the serious gamers hanging around.

Let me tell you just from working in Toys R Us as a temporary job during Christmas that people bought PS3 and XBOX 360 like crazy. Mostly moms and grandmothers who all had families with Wiis and all their kids wanted were the Kinect or the Move. The Wii U is not going to have ANYYYY problems.

Oh yeah, the Wii U will have no problems selling. My step sister in law asked me yesterday what "That new Wii thing was that was on the news" and then asked when it was coming out.

Now granted, my step sister in law isn't everyone else on Planet Earth, but a good indication that the WiiU is generating buzz already and WILL sell.
