Sci-Fi Edge of Tomorrow - Part 1

I think the era of the movie star is dying. With the rise Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, more and more audiences domestically are realizing no longer have to rely on starpower as much as they used to in order to gauge whether a movie will be worth their time. Now, there are some exception as not every RT Fresh or Good rating on Metacritic will be successful reviews wise (like Edge of Tomorrow), but for the most part people are relying on RT and Metacritic more to gauge whether a movie will be worth their time.

I mentioned this in the previous EOT thread. This is Cruise's 3rd movie in a row since MI: GP and domestically it hasn't done well. All 3 movies got good reviews, had action but couldn't even touch $100 million. Even MI: GP probably should have made more but at $209, it's still decent.

While I do agree that most movies now are not star driven as much as it was in the 80s and 90s, I think domestically US fans don't care for Cruise regardless of how good his movies are.

I thought, up until last year, that Will Smith was the last movie star. But then After Earth came out and that didn't do that well

& Will Smith now seems 2 be be against doing Sci-Fi movies since then

I think that came down to the movie looking dull, and most people knowing who was directing it, even if his name wasn't mentioned in the commericals. All of that in addition to terrrible word of mouth.

But even still if that movie, same quality, same marketing was released maybe 5 years ago It still wouldve done decent I think. Will Smith has had bad movies still do well.

But it's all moot. I dont mind the idea of movie stars being dead. As long as movies stay decent, I have actors who I like whose film I'll check out and ones that I dislike that I wont

To be fair, Will Smith did take 5 years off, and it was before another boom of Speculative Sci-Fi movies. It probably would have done better, especially if Shamalyan had decided to make this in 2008 instead of the happening. It would have still gotten horrible reviews, but it would have opened better.

To be fair, Sci-Fi movies have been having a harder time finding an audience at the Box Office. Especially more than Superhero movies are, and yet people are still predicting the downfall of supehero mvoies.

If the movie starred somebody else…like Robert Downey Jr..would the film do better?

I like Cruise but I think his stigma still lingers.

But I'm still glad it was Cruise in this. He was great.

It's the perfect role for him, honestly.

I could see Downey in the role to be honest.

Domestically.

He still does fine in foreign markets which is probably why they still put him in action type roles.

Speaking of Will Smith. I think this wouldve been a great role for him. I mean Cruise did great dont get me wrong, but Smith wouldve been cool too

RDJ would make all those jokes in the movie so sarcastic, it would feel different.

It would have made the character development for Cage even more significant considering how much more sarcastic and irresponsible RDJ can come off as, not to mention he comes off as less of a leader than Cruise.

I wonder how Brad Pitt would have done in this role. After all, he was WB's first choice to play the lead.

Pitt can't play smarmy to me. Cruise was in Jerry Maguire mode in the beginning so it worked for me. I agree that RDJ probably would have been equally as good. If anything, the character arc would have been better because he can play slimey pretty well.

This is a great film, and it is a real shame it is not getting the numbers at the box office it deserved.

I saw it again the other day. Great film and I really liked the ending. Hate when movies end on a super depressing note just because they can. I like a good happy ending.

Just saw this. Oh my Zod, I love it. Cruise and Blunt are so good. A fantastic combination of action, comedy and suspense. In the last four years Crusie has given me Knight and Day, Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow. I love him so. Happy Birthday legend.

I still haven't seen Knight and Day. You though it was pretty good, eh. I'll probably check it out soon.

I am definitely a fan. It is breezy and a lot of fun, with some great action. Cruise is brilliant. I love how these two different types films seem to collide, but instead of a mess it is pretty hilarious. They strike the exact right tone. The only odd thing is that after a film that looks pretty fantastic, they use atrocious CGI in the climax.
