So the news about a remake for ES 4: Oblivion has really been heating up lately and it looks like it’s (finally) going to be released. For some background, the rumors of this first started when some filings leaked that showed BGS was planning for remakes of Oblivion and Fallout 3 all the way back in 2020. The pandemic obviously threw a wrench in all of their plans but it’s been so long now that some of us probably assumed that it was all BS or had been cancelled. Well, now everyone is saying that the remake could be out by June, or possibly shadow-dropped as early as next month. Shadow-dropping something like this is crazy to me, but supposedly Todd Howard really wants to do that with a game. I doubt they would ever shadow-drop something like ES6 or the next Fallout but a remake does seem like something that would work for.

As for the game itself, the rumor is that it will be in Unreal Engine 5 and will feature Soulslike combat. As someone who loves the Elder Scrolls world and almost equally loves Elden Ring, that sounds like a dream scenario for me. I’ve only played a bit of the original game and couldn’t get into it due to how dated it was. So this could potentially feel like playing an entirely new game to folks like me who didn’t get into the series until Skyrim (and I even came to that one way later than everyone else).

What do you all think? Are you looking forward to this? Personally I really want BGS to give us some updates on ES6 but this could be a perfect way to tide fans over since that game probably won’t come out for at least another 2-3 years.

Apparently that fan-made Skyblivion remake (which is Oblivion only with Skyrim’s game engine) is also coming out soon too. It would be funny if that came out around the same time and people preferred it over the actual BGS remake. I could honestly see that happening, but I’m hoping both versions are good.

Does Bethesda usually post birthday messages when each of its games has an anniversary? Because if not, then that seemingly nothing post might be more specific than we think. Like, if Bethesda doesn’t usually acknowledge Oblivion’s birthday but suddenly this year they are, then maybe they are hinting very subtly that something is coming.

But if this is something they do every year for all of their big name games, then I can understand why that post is so frustrating.

EDIT: So I went back through Bethesda’s posts for the past two years (f*** Musk and Twitter by the way) and last year they didn’t mention Oblivion’s birthday but they did the year before. However, last year was also the 30th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls franchise, which was only a few days later. So they may have skipped mentioning Oblivion due to the more significant milestone just a little later. So… inconclusive.

Intriguing. I've only played Skyrim, but I love it. Where does Oblivion rank? Better or worse?

I can understand them passing over Arena and Daggerfall, but it’s odd that they’re skipping over Morrowind and going straight to Oblivion.

I think Oblivion was a much bigger commercial success and that's why they went with it.
Oblivion was the bigger commercial success, but Morrowind's reputation among the TES fandom is unrivalled. There is a reason why the Morrowind expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online played so heavily on TES3 nostalgia and was a big success as a result.

Morrowind is very much the game in the series that deserves the remaster treatment to introduce it to a new audience, but to be fair, it probably needs more of a remake than just a remaster. Most of its dialogue is read and not voice acted, which would probably be an issue in the current market.

Yeah I hope they do eventually remake Morrowind (and if they do, it will sell very well) but like DK said, it would take a lot more work than Oblivion. I think it could definitely happen though, depending on how well this Oblivion game sells and ultimately how ES6 performs when it finally comes out in 2174.

Finally! Some TES VI news...

Silly intern with the big mistake. Doesn't know a 4 from a 6 in Roman numerals... Sheesh...

I am absolutely shocked.

I was literally contemplating replaying the game, soon. I've not touched Skyrim in a long time just out of pure fatigue of it, and I much preferred Oblivion, anyway. What timing.

Not only does this look stellar - but TODAY?!?!?!

That said - I'm not sure if I should hold out for a physical release? They've not said anything about it yet.

It’s here!

Interesting, the port to Unreal 5, as well as the addition of new dialogue and gameplay/leveling adjustments begs the question of why not Morrowind if they were going to put so much work into digging under the hood to modernize the game.

Also I can't help but laugh at the the fact that the infamous horse armour and other overpriced DLC is not included in the base game but forms the basis of the $15 deluxe edition upgrade. :funny:
