Hawkeye Episodes 1 and 2 (Spoiler Discussion)

Question... How does the origin of Clint's hearing loss affect this story or anything else in the two episodes?

Its different than the comics because this ain't the comics.

So... Why does it matter the manner Clint suffered his hearing loss here? Did that affect quality or anytghing else?

So far the first two episodes have been a bit slower than I like…especially since there’s only 6 episodes in this series. I think Kate is ok but not too invested in her as a future Avenger…at least not yet. Found myself getting bored with her scenes in the first episode and just wanted Clint to come onscreen. I’m here to watch Clint as Hawkeye and have the series slowly introduce me to Kate (I know he will eventually pass the baton to her). Instead, I felt like they rammed her down my throat from the first scene.

It is more front loaded with Kate no denying.

I think that is unavoidable though. We have close to ten years getting to know Clint. Where he is at, what is going on inside him, his personal life, these can be illustrated or established in ways that take less time because we are intimate with Clint. Kate needs all the backstory and characterization she can get as she's the one being introduced.

The thing is, at least for me, I’m tuning in to watch Clint. Yes, I’ve had 10 years to watch him but he’s also why I’m watching this show in the first place. Kate isn’t Hawkeye yet but to heavily focus on her right from the start is a bold move that didn’t land with me.

In the Loki series, they gradually introduced the audience to Sylvie and by the end of the 6 episodes, not only did I love the character but I also felt I learned a lot about her. It’s a shame they didn’t approach Kate the same way. I don’t hate the character but I do feel like I wasted two episodes worth of time on her and the second episode didn’t leave me clamoring for more of her.

Fair enough.

I just think that what can evoke a reaction to me with Clint in the series doesn't require as much screen time or effort. Like Renner can just do a gesture or a subtle facial expression and I get what they are going for I have an accumulated sense of him and what anything means to him where I need to get to know Kate and require more info.

But yeah I too a degree, despite the show being sold as a pass the torch, hero in training under the vet thing, I understand wanting more Clint given that despite all the years we have with him he was a character that got less spotlight than the others having no solo film and having to fight for screen time and attention against the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Cap.

I agree completely

I didn't have a problem with the whole Kate's dad died and raised by her mom since I think it better sets up Clint as a father figure for her. You don't or didn't necessarily have to kill her dad off to do that but still. It also drove her to archery, martial arts, etc because she felt she had to protect her mom and "be ready in case aliens came back"

Her mom was the one who died in the comics, so it was really unnecessary in my view to kill off the dad. It feels like they're just folllowing a stupid trend.

I wanna chalk it up to people either not knowing Vera Farmiga Or just lacking imagination, but its almost too obvious Why they decided to keep Kate's mom alive instead, and its most certainly not because they're following a "trend"

Enjoyable first couple of episodes. Hailee Steinfeld has done a great job carrying this show far with Jeremy Renner being more of a supportive character, but I think going forward both characters will be leading the series as they are now kinda stuck together

Tony Dalton is definitely channeling Lalo Salamanca playing Jack. The dude is just so damn charismatic. They’re making it too obvious that he’s the suspect in Armand’s death, I don’t think it was him though

And I love the dog!

I liked the 2nd episode more than the 1st, since it had more Kate & Clint together. I really liked the end music too in this episode.

With the show only being 6 episodes maybe the fiance is the murderer but he did it in such a clever way. If it is not him they will need to likely introduce another possible person this next episode, unless Kate's mom did it.

Well, good news seems to I am in a better place after 2 episodes of this than Falcon and Loki, so good chance I may actually stick around for all of it.

First, mad props to Marvel for catering to a specific segment of Hailee Steinfeld fans. :cwink::cwink::cwink:

Kate Bishop is fun. Quite enjoying her so far, and it is a good chemistry between her and Clint. Episodes do feel a little long, imo. A bit concerned about the action, as the strobing lights in the cellar fight was very annoying, and the rest seems a bit tough to see.

I do think one thing, seeing the Barton family together, made me wish we could have had more of was seeing Natasha interact with the family.

Maybe we get Yelena and the Barton's at some point?

I wasn't as Gaga as some with Pugh's Yelena but whatever one might think she was a sharp cookie. I can totally see her not totally buying Val's "avenge your sister" BS or at least she would want more of the story. "Accidentally" running into Mrs. Barton and the clan might be on her to do list before doing something. If nothing else it makes for a tug on the heartstrings moment if say the kids start talking about Auntie Nat and she realizes there is no way Clint outright murdered Tasha.

The fact that Tasha's death would still be an open wound and not something Clint has forgotten at all is an aspect I like about the show so far.

I think they were just setting that up and it'll come into play later on - especially with Echo showing up

As for Jack - Yeah, I really hope he isn't the villain at this point. He's just so overtly suspicious. Would love to see him ruined by the end of the season and recruited by the Contessa.

That is my current position, too. Jack Duquesne is so transparently slimy and untrustworthy that he almost has to not be the villain. Its too obvious. My own current guess, is that he is more or less exactly what he seems to be: a sketchy manipulative lothario who has the hots for Eleanor Bishop and/or her money, and who perhaps has a sideline as an amoral mercenary type. He's not a mastermind, and he didn't kill his uncle. Partly this would be because anything else would be too on the nose, and partly this would be to lead up to a good dramatic conflict of "Kate Bishop has to heroically defend her mother Eleanor from Jack Duquesne, who is. . . attempting to kill her because she murdered his uncle, who he cared about despite not getting along with." Since, if Jack didn't kill his uncle, Eleanor is really the #2 top suspect.

I don’t care if Kingpin or Mat Murdock will appear in this…all I care is, that „Fairytale of New York“ will be used in an upcoming episode

Is Steinfeld doing something strange with her voice? It almost sounds like she's British trying to do an American accent. There's something stagy and stilted about it.

That's just her normal voice. She does put a lot of character into, but she always does that.

I'm watching the pilot again. So the bell. If it really could be completely destroyed like that by simply being rang, isn't that a massive safety hazard that shouldn't be allowed to stand? :funny:

Absolutely lol but no one would know unless they rang it first which would be a problem in and of itself
