Escape from New York (Remake) - Part 1

I half agree with you there. I thought the concept to Lockout was awesome and I LOVED Guy Pearce's character. But the movie itself... it almost felt like an action movie with barely any action in it. Aside from the (awful) CGI bike chase and the aerial fight over the propeller, it seemed like most of the movie consisted of Snow and the President's daughter just hiding out in janitorial closets. I guess it was the budget. It's shame, because I would go to see the Snow character in 10 more movies.

This sums up my feelings on Lockout perfectly, shame they couldnt do more with the concept as the potential was there. Pierce as Snow was superb though.

I rarely defend the whole "it was the budget" excuse but for Lockout I absolutely do and will continue to. It was made for less than $20. And had less than a $5 mil marketing budget. When I spoke with Stephen St Leger at one of the only two NY screenings he said with another $10 mil for effects there definitely would have been more action. There were two in the script they couldn't shoot, so they did the all CG bike chase thing instead (which wasn't in the original script).

It's shame, because I would go to see the Snow character in 10 more movies.

Me too. Like you said, a shame. We need more action movie characters like that. And like the new Dredd. But those $200+ mil forgettable movies will keep being churned out like clockworks. There's no money in small action oriented passion projects unless someone like daddy Jackson handles the effects for a discount (i.e. District 9)

I love the idea of this being the Joel Silver equivalent of the Francis Ford Coppola Metropolis film.

I spot like three worthwhile things in the past ten years. Looks like the guy just really wants a hit franchise movie based on that recent record.

I disagree. The man has an absolute quality track record.

Things change though in time. He's still somewhat successful and he's a name but he's struggling to stay relevant. Which is just how it is.

He's a product of the 80's and now he's just slowing down.

And that's exactly my point. There are few things I fear in terms of film making more than a producer who desperately wants a hit, regardless what it is, to relive his glory days.

What are you seeing that I'm not seeing

Movies obviously. There's definitely more than three good ones there.

Don't see why he doesn't have a few left in him. Seeing as how he's still put out some good stuff.

I don't. But obviously we have different tastes.

I don't see him attached to anything that gives me faith that he isn't riding out his last bit of fame. Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade. Hope he surprises me, but if it does it will indeed be a surprise.

He had nothing to do with the following beyond letting IM Global use his name on the posters.

2013 Enemies Closer (executive producer)
2013 Getaway (executive producer)
2012 Bullet to the Head (executive producer)
2012 The Apparition (producer)

As for upcoming, he's producing The Gunman, a Pierre Morrel action film starring Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Javier Bardem. Plenty of potential there.

What are you, his agent? The guy has been attached to +85% crap for more than a decade. So, no, I have no faith in him trying to reboot an iconic franchise I love simply because he can. He seems desperate. And his history of flops are all the proof I need. If he surprises me I'll sing his praises but right now he's like a dad who hasn't paid child support for a decade but promises the next check is in the mail.

Geez man, I'm trying to explain to you he's been sitting on his ass collecting cheques for two years and his next real film is from the director of Taken and has an awesome cast. Ok, fine, you have no faith? NOT MY PROBLEM! It's happening, so unless he drops out, GET OVER IT!

I didn't realize Silver was producer on Non-Stop and Veronica Mars, there's two up and coming movies I am interested in.

Starlog is reporting that Charlie Hunnam is the top choice to play Snake, but Jon Bernthal and Dan Stevens are also on the shortlist.

I gotta say, I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I saw the original Escape from New York and I was very underwhelmed and actually felt bored throughout most of the movie. I guess I went in with the wrong expectations, I was expecting a cool Kurt Russell 80's action thriller but it ended up just seeming so low budget, low rent, unexciting, un-energetic and just not very interesting. At least to me. Kurt Russell was good but that was about it.

I prefer Big Trouble in Little China myself, or The Thing.

What is it with movie studios' need to suddenly all be clamoring for the same actor for various action roles? Newsflash people, there are other actors out there besides Charlie Hunnam, Taylor Kitsch and Chris Hemsworth.
