Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

Snake Plissken: The Early Years
Producer confirms Escape will be a prequel.
by Stax

US, March 23, 2007 - Exec producer John Carpenter, who directed the 1981 original, recently speculated that New Line Cinema's planned retelling of Escape From New York may be more of a prequel than a flat-out remake. Now the project's producer, Neal Moritz, has confirmed that approach.

In a brief interview in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Moritz says the new Escape will recount "how Snake became Snake," adding that the story -- to be scripted by Black Hawk Down's Ken Nolan -- will be "almost an origin story."

So there you have it. Snake Plissken, the film's one-eyed badass anti-hero, will be getting the "how he came to be" treatment, a la Batman Begins and Casino Royale.

Will that mean audiences will see Snake's military service, how he lost his eye and became an outlaw? Can fans expect to see Snake, Brain and Fresno Bob raising hell together?

Ironically, IGN offered up it's own suggestions on how to reboot the Escape From New York franchise back in January -- weeks before the news broke -- and we said it should focus on Snake's back-story.

300's Gerard Butler will play Snake, stepping into the thigh-high boots last worn by Kurt Russell, who has gone on record about how unhappy he is with the new Escape.

The difference between Batman Begins/Casino Royale and this is that their origin stories were adapted from an original source, they had an already established and successful plot outline to extract from. They are handing over complete trust to this writer to create an origin for a character who has worked fine through 2 movies without one

well that blows...

....if Snake's mission in New York isn't the main focus of the film, they better not name is Escape from New York. i'm upset that they want to do "almost an origin story". i hope they don't show any events more than 5 years before Snake gets captured.

i REALLY really hope they don't tell how Snake lost his eye, but i just know they're gonna go for it...

Haha. A remake was bad enough guess they wanted to go even further with it.

This is awesome news. I love it. I want to see Brain screw him over, etc...However all of that backstory can't take too much time especially in the military. Assuming it's a 2hr movie maybe 10-15 minutes of back story in the military, and another 15 minutes or so of Snake as a criminal before he get's caught and then 1-1.5 hours of in and out of NY.

It's logical to me this time around at the end for the police NOT to let Snake off the Island. Setting up another escape movie. I love this. Hope they find a good director. If McG is attached I'll leave this thread forever.

OF course his mission to NY is the main storyline. I'm sure it'll start off in Iraq or something and Brain leaves Snake behind. He takes shrapnel in the eye from some roadside bomb or something and Brain leaves him for dead. Snake eventually escapes with his medals, etc... and is honorably discharged from his wounds. Something happens that makes him turn against society and he probably goes on a string of robberies and is a wanted man. Perhaps a few years go buy and they show this through newspaper headlines of "another Snake robbery" etc...Finally he get's caught and we start where the original movie starts. This time when Snake walks in on Brain later in the film it'll be a surprise not only to snake but to the audience cause we'll recognize him at the same time. It'll be more like living through the character then just watching him.

Some of you are running around half cocked with negativity. I'm sure if Bryan Singer was directing it you'd be drooling.

I'm meh on Singer.

He's made a couple movies I still enjoy (Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil and X-men), and then a couple I that I thought were just ok (X-men 2 and Superman Returns)

^ I was just using him as an example of a director who some people cream over for some reason. He's done solid work but c'mon. Anyways all of this news means they're going to strengthen the character and make him even more complex. They don't have time to go into to much details and show everything. WHy would some of you think that the NY mission is not the main story??? That's ******ed considering it's the title. Otherwise they'd call it "The Chronicles of Plisskin". LOL

I'm sick of all these comments like "This sucks" and "that blows". Exactly what sucks and what blows? You know nothing of this film yet. No details have been released and no director is attached and you know of no other stars attached. Before you start bashing a film wouldn't it make sense to actually have some information in your brain about how they're handling it.

Here are some things that should and will piss everyone off:

1) If it's PG-13. That will kill it right there. #1 no no.
2) If it's the same tone of Escape from LA. This film needs to be dark.
3) If we get a director that's sucks or doesn't fit the project.
4) I we don't get more of a back story. (Honestly guys for this remake to work we need to see a bit more of Snake's history. It'll make the character that much better. Not too much...but more.
5) If they don't take advantage of today's film technology yet at the same time they sacrifice the story in favore of explosions and F/X. (Of course they should be upgraded but ONLY when neccessary. I want this film to be dark, scary, and ominous.
6) If the movie is too short.
7) If Snake has short hair, &/or no eye patch.

Those should be important to anyone who's a true fan of the character. Of course you don't want every ounce of Snake's history fleshed out but enough to make this film fresh, and to reveal more about the characters that were really only lightly touched on.

Bring on that Russian director who did Night watch. He's perfect. I had to make Night & watch separate because a naughty word is within it the other way. LOL

^ Well I usually follow anything certain directors do but there's a limit. LOL The one's I love:

John McTienernan (WTF happened to him?)
Paul Verehoven (sci-fi only)
Tony Scott
John Carpenter (w/Kurt Russell only)
Ridley Scott
James Cameron
Walter Hill

i know it'll never happen but...

...ALFONSO CUARON!!! hehe

I'm sorry guys but I'm just not in agreement at all. I love the original movies, I loved Kurt as Snake, and I honestly don't think a remake will do anything except make people wish they where watching kurt again.

Personaly I thought both movies where amazing despite what some may say about LA. I thought the point of those movies was the character more than anything else. Your classic badass rebel hero that'll kill anything before it moves. Kurt did that with syle. Kurt made Snake what he is. The honest reason why they can't make a remake work is because no one else can play snake.....because Kurt IS Snake.

Now I honestly wouldn't be against seeing Kurt coming back to reprise the role. He's not to old, he's just old enough. Do a sequal to LA and have em' go all out. The world finaly get's themselves outa the dark ages Snake put em' in and guess what, despite how much they wana kill him they need his help gain. IT WOULD BE GREAT! Again I have to say Kurt is not to old, in fact the age thing would just give it an extra edge. An older, grizzled Snake has to save the world one last time before he actualy dies. Ya see that has always been the threat, but this time it should be the reality, that Snake will die at the end of the film. Look at the new Grindhouse trailer, look at Kurt there and tell me he's to old to still be a badass.

Lol, I just saw the lastest new that it gona be a prequel right? Didn't see that before I posted.

In that case....maybe, MAYBE I could see it, not sure at all though. A prequel does give it possibility though.

^ Kurt is too old to restart the franchise and despite what you think about Escape from LA...most people thought it sucked and it did horribly at the box office. I loved him too but if they're restarting the franchise a 55 year old ain't gonna work...or however old he is. It didn't work in LA and it won't work now.

Again let's see how this film develops. director annoucement is most important and then supporting cast.

It's not really a prequel. It's more of an expanded storyline that tells more of Snakes origin and events that lead up to his mission in NY...and then the mission in NY. I've said this from post 1 that no way they're just remaking the film frame for frame. That would be stupid. OF course they're gonna tell more of a backstory.

If they remake the original movie than they are just raping it for money, because as I said all the people who have seen the original will be looking at it thinking "Man I wish that was Russel" or "Man he doesn't look anything like Snake" while those who have never seen it before will talk about how great and original it is and flood the industry with the money they where trying to rape them out of.

if that's what you, personally, would think then say it like that...try not to use "people" to support your own opinion.

but i agree that they're only restarting this franchise to make some money. i'm okay with it that if they're gonna put in the time and talent to produce a quality flick as opposed to trying to make a quick buck by making a half-assed flick (ala Ghost Rider).

Every single film out there is put out there to make money. There might be other factors including politics on some documenteries but these people are in it to make money. Escape from NY was a great franchise that has a huge following. The sequel sucked squirrel nuts. That had Kurt in it w/John Carpenter directing and it was awful. I blame that on Carpenter and whoever helped him write that garbage. Kurt explained it best about how Dark this franchise is supposed to be yet he made "Escape from La" which was bascially a parody of the first film in most ways. Why the hell did that happen? New Line desires to restart the franchise and there is not one ounce of evidence to suggest they'll screw it up...yet. They hired a guy who I believe can play snake and looks even more formidable then ever. They're gonna get a big enough budget so none of the action or sets look like they were done on the cheap. Like remember Kurt shooting through that wall so he could jump through and when he did it was like he jumped through paper and it even sounded like paper. LOL Simple sound effects and some CGI debris would have made that much more impressive without overdoing it. Punisher did that well in a cheap movie. I want to see the crazies down in the sewers, I want to see the backstory (somewhat), and imagine the scene of him going into NY with today's film tech. Snake pretty much whispered through the whole film so any decent actor could do the same voice...and now we have one that looks like he could play the part as well which is just as important. This movie needs to be dark and hardcore.

you need to relax a little and let people have their opinions. and #4 on your list couldn't be further from the truth for me and a bet a lot of other Snake fans, and that doesn't make me or anyone else less of a fan of the character.

I said "more" of a backstory. Fill in a few of the gaps. Don't overdo it. I am relaxed...this is just me in a relaxed state damnit! What's wrong with you. Get off my back leave me alone! I can feel you in my mind...get out! What the.....! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ;)

I Already posted this but from a different site :csad:

With a bit more backstory the audience will feel more of Snake's emotions throughout the film.

I've never understood the concept of being "emotionally attached" to fictional character, or feel emotions from a fictional character.

How completely and utterly predictable. Yes Mr. Moritz, please remove every single shred of mystery about Snake and oh yeah, make sure you put him in a really fast car with flames on the sides and have him meet up with Vin Diesel at some point.
