Ant-Man Evangeline Lilly Cast as Hope Van Dyne

I love the idea of Evangeline Lilly playing Wasp. She seems like a perfect choice for the role because she puts a lot of energy and enthusiasm into her acting roles, and I often associate Wasp with high enthusiasm and energy when it comes being a superhero. Lilly should do great. Hopefully the script will give her enough to do in the movie.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing "Hope Pym," the daughter of Hank and, apparently, Janet Van Dyne.

But the thread title is misleading. None of the interviews yet have confirmed the existence of Wasp, the superheroine. At this point, Hope Pym might be just a "regular" human being, until we hear otherwise.

"Hope"ing she becomes Wasp, yes, but right now, we can't say that for sure.

I doubt it. You don't hire Evangeline Lilly, who's most famous role has her being a complete badass, and then just have her be one man's daughter and another man's love interest. Granted, she's definitely one of those things and could very well be the other one as well. But I doubt that that's all she'll be.

I adore Ms. Lilly. :hrt:

I've been a fan of hers for a long time and it's cool to finally see her in a superhero film. I always thought she could have made a great Lois Lane. Hopefully, Marvel utilizes her well.

She could be a really cool Wasp.

I put the title as "is Wasp" because that's what I believe this means.

It would be a huge waste to take such an amazing actress as Lily and then not turn her into Wasp so she can integrate into the Avengers team.

Personally I would have rather kept the Thread Title as "Evangeline Lily is Wasp", but the moderators changed it on me. :(

You don't hire Vin Diesel, who's known *only* for roles as a complete badass, to voice-act a talking tree with just one line, either. :cwink:

I *want* to be optimistic, and I *hope* Hope becomes Wasp and joins the Avengers. But, since they've re-written every other canon character in this movie completely (except for the lead, Scott Lang; at least they seem to be getting *him* "right", thank god), I'm not willing to call that a safe bet.

Hope Pym is a villain from an alternate future. She's known as the Red Queen and a villain. At least in the comics. So I'm 50% sure that Wasp won't be joining the Avengers in the future.

Janet Van Dyne is confirmed to be dead. Hank Pym is just Hank Pym, not Yellowjacket while the new Yellowjacket is a villain. Hank Pym is also incredibly old which kind of implies that this film is In Name Only. It's seriously competing with X-Men Origins for the least faithful Marvel adaptation of all time.

The talking tree with just one line, who also is badass. So that example doesn't really hold up.

But that's the thing with Vin, he was hired for the Groot as voice work. He's still be looked at for a future movie where he's actually on screen.

Except that she may not be. 'Being in an accident' doesn't necessarily mean that she is dead. The transcript from the interview was badly written and was missing words. Yes an accident is implied, but it almost sounds like it drove Hank and Janet apart to the point where he didn't raise his daughter. There could be any number of reasons as to why she's not around. For all we know, maybe Hank accidentally shrunk her and can't seem to find her. Maybe she got kidnapped by ants? There could be any number of explanations for this accident that occurred.

True. But the *simplest* explanation is that Janet is dead, and Hank could be implicit in the cause, albeit involuntarily. It would explain why there's some confusion even among the people actually making this movie about Hope's last name: if the angle is that Hope chooses not to be called Pym, it would make more sense that it's because she blames Daddy for Mommy's *death* instead of for some non-lethal "accident."

Plus, it would pretty much needlessly overcomplicate things to have a Janet *and* a Hope still around. Lilly is advertised as the female lead; having Janet just be "lost in the microverse" or otherwise still very much alive would steal Hope's thunder.

I would be happy with Hope taking over as Wasp in this just like Scott is taking over for Hank. Why not?

Not if she just appears in it briefly.. maybe as a nugget for a possible Ant-Man 2 if the first one does well. Or maybe even as an Avengers sequel. There's so many possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if they left Janet's fate vague so that future movies can do whatever they want to do with her.

Maybe Cross is secretly responsible for Janets death. Or her and Hank were working as Ant Man and Wasp and she was killed by getting stepped on.

This is one case where I tend to agree with Sam, that this is the simplest and most likely situation. Now, as for whether or not Janet was ever actually the Wasp back in the 60's (or whenever) -- I haven't decided where I stand on that. I lean towards probably not, but I could see it going either way.

I bet Hope is estranged from Hank in the movie. Or it could be like a Watchmen deal where she doesnt know Hanks her real dad. Who knows.

I expect Jan to have been The Wasp in the past, or else they'd have used Maria as Pyms ex wife. I also expect Hope to imply she will become the Wasp in the future, in a 'next time baby' kind of way. I hope that an Ant-Man sequel with the same main 3 leads would be called, simply, 'Wasp'.

I bet Hope is estranged from Hank in the movie.
That's a rather safe bet, since Douglas literally said in the interview "My daughter, Evangeline -- pardon, Hope -- was alienated from me."

Any chance a Moderator can change my thread heading back, maybe something like this?

Evangeline Lilly is Wasp (maybe)

^^ Why? We know she's Hope Van Dyne, we don't know she's Wasp... The title's fine as is

If she is The Wasp add ...aka WASP later on

^ Because I created this post based on my belief that she will be Wasp, not just Hope Van Dyne...

For example, lets say someone thought she would end up being the Red Queen, so a good thread title might be:

Evangeline Lilly is the Red Queen

Same for this thread. It's based on my belief that she will be more than just the estranged daughter of the elder Hank Pym, but will indeed take on the mantle of Wasp! That's what I want this thread to be about...

The way I've noticed the threads working on SHH is that there will typically only be one single master thread for a given actor/character, and all discussion of that actor, and all aspects of the character they may (or may not) be playing, will be consolidated into that one thread, rather than distributed among multiple threads. So if people think she is going to play Red Queen, they can discuss it in the main Lilly thread (this one) rather than starting a separate one that may overlap it in discussion.

Otherwise we may could easily be swamped by unnecessarily many threads, largely rehashing the same things:
- Lilly is Wasp
- Lilly is Red Queen
- Lilly is playing Pym's daughter
- The "What is Hope's Last Name?" Thread
- The Lilly Appreciation Thread
- The Hope/Lang shipping thread
- The "Is Hope really Thanos?" thread
