Evil Dead (2013)

So I've seen mostly good reviews. Even the negative reviews aren't particularly bad. The few negative reviews I've seen seemed like the reviewers expected the film to be several things it was never going to be i.e. some deep character piece. Others were let down that the film doesn't dig into certain drug related metaphors enough.

I've seen pretty much nothing but praise for what the film DOES do though.

Seems weird to criticize a film for being successful in its intents.

Sounds like
I think if you go in with the right mindset, it should be a blast. While it looks to have more character development than the original, they are similar in that you are not necessarily there to watch the characters survive. You are there to see what inventively gory and horrible ways the filmmakers can torture them. It's not torture porn because it is tongue-in-cheek, which means while it may be gross or shocking, it should be taken with a laugh and not a scream. That is the vibe I am getting.
To be honest, as much I love the movies, I was never struck on the first.
I respect it for what it is and did enjoy it, but it was the humour later on in the series that did it for me.

I know there is supposed to be hidden humour within it, but I can't see it lol
Same with this one I suppose?

So I am embarrassed to say I never seen the original evil dead movies. I only heard about them. But I read the ign review for this new remake has piked my interest. However, I do enjoy horror movies as much as the next guy ( Jason, Freddy , Micheal myers and other horror films) but people have said that the evil dead movies have a ton of really, really gross scenes and some twisted messed up moments ( even more so with this new remake). I ask because I kinda have a weak stomach sorta lol.

Also I tend to avoid demon possession movies ( never seen exorcist or similar movies) but I have seen like the paranormal movies as they are tame ( reason I avoid the demon possession horror movies is because I am a Christian). Anyway, I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys on whether or not a should check out the older movies or if they are for me. Sorry for the long post and ramblings.

The Evil Dead films can be fairly vile at times (angry molesting trees and beheadings for instance), but really, its almost just cartoonish and bizarre especially given the bright colors that are used for a lot of the effects.

Evil Dead 2 in particular, may be more your speed in that it really edges towards more slapstick.

Army of Darkness is pretty much a horror/fantasy comedy.

If you have Netflix, I know at least the first film is available on instant. I recommend watching it with friends, if any are willing.

Thanks for the info. I think will give them a shot, and will most likely check out the new remake.

Just saw a TV spot for ED.

Just like with the audience reactions for the PA films, are people just exaggerating because they know they're on camera or do some of them actually get that scared or shocked? I always wonder if it's bull **** or not.

Maybe actually visit a theater during one sometime. People do actually squeal and squirm during horror movies. Not everyone is a hardcore horror fan with a lifetime sub to Fangoria.

I don't doubt that the camera reactions are real but it's not much of a stretch to assume the studio probably chooses/edits the best ones. Let's not fool ourselves.

I've been to numerous horror films in the theater, and yes I do occasionally hear some people scream or jump. It's just in the clips, it looks a bit overdone as if they were overacting for the camera. Especially with Evil Dead, because they had a contest to show your reactions to the trailer.

I do not think you will find them scary, however the lack of plot in the first two makes them harder to get into for some modern viewers (as well as the amteurish acting of the first). The third works for almost anyone because it is a straight up comedy. Even the gore is toned down.

As many horror films as I watch the part in the redband with the tongue splitting makes me cringe every time.

It seems a hair overboard in the gore department. And gore isn't what I find scary anyway. But creepy demon cabin might make up for it anyway.

Even though I'm a comic geek and have a big list of movies to check out this year, I think I'm looking forward to this the most out of all! Man, April cannot get here fast enough..

It will be super cool if we see old Ash come back to modern time after the ending of Army of Darkness. Kinda like Robin Williams 's character in Jumanji.

I think you called it....

Not 100% legit confirmation, but I've read in some comment sections around the net that the post credits is Ash getting spit out of a portal in the Cabin.

If that rumor is indeed true,
I think that's what might lead into an Evil Dead 4, which Raimi was talking about recently.

What was the original ending of AOD?

Was it Ash back in the present? Or was he stuck in post-apocalyptic London?

Yeah, seems it will be called Army of Darkness 2 if it goes through. Campbell said both the new and old can exist perfectly, and that Raimi wanted to make sure he can go back and do another story with Ash. They didnt want that closed off. Hopefully they follow through this time.

Raimis original was the post apocalyptic ending. Cause he thought since Ash is a idiot he would have messed that up hahah. But the theatrical ending was the S-Mart one. Lot more crowd pleasing.

Perhaps they'll follow up on that ending as opposed to the theatrical ending? :hehe:

I always thought the games were canonical. Like at the end of A Fistful of Boomstick where he was stuck in Ancient Japan lol

Jane Levy is definitely gonna blow up after this one. She's good on Suburgatory, but apparently in this she shows all kinds of range.

She's my hopeful for Harley Quinn :)

Pissed she has a boyfriend though :( lol

Jane Levy would've played a great Mary Jane, I think.

Indeed

But she looks so much like Emma Stone.
Maybe it would have explained Peter going out with her so quick after Gwens death lol
