It's all subjective. I wish I would have known that some of the movies I've seen this summer were 2nd rate. I won't know how good this movie is until I see it.

it's subjective, but lets not kids ourselves when there are things called word of mouth and critic and non/critic reviews to at least guide someone to deciding if they would like it or not... they don't have to actually see a movie to deem if it's worth their time and dollar with outlets such as those to help them form somewhat of an opinion

Man of Steel is an entry point to Superman and we aren't getting a new Batman standalone movie until 2018-19 I believe? Granted yes, they are marketing Ben Affleck's Batman as angrier and older, more pissed, but we did get an older Batman already with TDK Rises.

I believe this holds the same with this Fantastic Four. I've seen very clear references to Ultimate Marvel constantly from trailer shots to them talking about the characters.
Uh, what?

I disliked Ant-man and Jurrasic World. I didn't know I'd dislike those movies before I saw them.

Unless you're one of these "I don't care if it sucks as long as it makes enough for a sequel" types then that comment wasn't directed at you anyway.

I think its rooted in impatience.

Those who would complain and refuse to settle lackluster attempts adapting the comics have a level of patience that those who would gladly accept it don't.

They want it now. Those of us who refuse to accept it are content with waiting.

Fair point.

Not sure why it's somehow impossible to form an opinion on a movie either based on promotional material (which sole purpose is to convince you to see it) or from a trusted secondhand source, whether a critic or a friend. If you see or hear about elements that are substandard or lackluster or just not to your tastes, it would seem perfectly reasonable to give that movie a miss. I think that's most people's approach anyway. Otherwise promos, reviews and word of mouth wouldn't be so important if no one took any notice.

Sure, without having even seen the movie. "Oh I heard that it sucks", "have you seen it?", "no but...."

This is a very limited approach, I understand where it's coming from but it's just heavily flawed.

Twitter tells me they did push Fantastic Four to this week in Mexico. That is not a good sign. I'm also hearing something about cancelled press functions in the country. Not a great sign...

no it's not.. not when they seemed to have a huge marketing campaign down there

I'm sorry you disliked them. you must have very unique tastes compared to the majorities. Nothing wrong with that,

Exactly. And wouldn't it have been nice to save your time and money by not seeing those second-rate films?

We may get suckered into seeing a bad film on occasion, but there's certainly no reason to go to one that looks bad from the start.

Even a bad film can have some elements that make it worth seeing.

Or trusting a friend who knows your tastes quite well or a reviewer you often agree with or promotional material that still show substandard FX, stilted acting etc if you want to frame it another way. You could play the game of 'what about all those times everything you seen and heard didn't reflect your experience seeing the movie", but most people wouldn't go to see a movie on the off chance they're wrong.

it's not flawed at all.. when a movie looks "sucky" to you, and you have no desire to see it... it's perfectly reasonable to NOT want to see it..

I don't know about you, but more often than not my instincts are usually spot on with general concensus's especially with those who usually share my same likes in films

Quoting for posterity.

This is what defenders have been driven to say to attempt convince people to buy a ticket. Bad films still have elements worth seeing. What a ringing endorsement.

Sure thing.....but for me, I watch those on cable or off of one of those 20 movies for $5 sets at WalMart.

Not a fan of watching bad movies in general, but there are sometimes when a film has a bad reputation where I find my curiosity gets the better of me. Though most are simply gard to watch rather than getting any ironic enjoyment out of it. I've watched He-man a few times and there are bits of that I find hard going.

Seriously. I get maybe six trips to the theater per year. I want them to count.

I saw 7 films last year. This year I'm at 7 right now. There's only 2 other films I NEED to see this year. Spectre and Star Wars. Everything else, can be a I'm bored, let's see a movie or a Netflix.
