That's exactly what i'm afraid of. That empty feeling of "meh" after you see a film, and the complete forgetting of it a week later. Jupiter Ascending and Second Son both had that effect on me and this might easily fit in with those movies. Still hoping it's good because of the cast.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine also had a good cast. Gigli had a good cast. Waterworld had a good cast. It'll be a film with great actors trying their best but many of the scenes just won't work and the editing will feel off because of a poor choice of director.

Some of the cast was why Origins had a few bright spots. While things may not be looking good for the film, I still have enough interest to see it.

Reshoots are a double edged sword.. they are indeed done to make a film better, but more often than not call for re-scripting, actors getting back into character, and when this is done sometime after principal photography, it can be difficult to make those changed scenes flow as smoothly as the original... thus Kate Mara's terrible wig.

I remember Mad Max: Fury Road had some reshoots that got people speculating that something was wrong with it and then it got delayed for a while and then everyone thought it was likely gonna be terrible

Rating: 98% on RT

...most films have reshoots.. MOST films DONT HAVE "EXTENSIVE" reshoots...

and MOST films that do... turn out bad.

look there's exceptions to everything.. but you can tell from the Reshoot wig on Kate Mara alone.. the care in quality for the reshoots were not high.

look at the evidence we have to go on, not other films as comparisons.

George Miller is a talented filmmaker.

Josh Trank is not.

This is one of Campea's reasons for still being excited about this film. That and Josh Trank directing. There is a lot wrong with those reasonings (even ignoring the production problems), but I don't feel like going into detail.

Fury Road was a labor of love. Fant4stic is an corporate live action rights extension strategy.

The Mad Max reshoots happened because Miller showed WB what he had shot with the inital budget. And they were so blown away with the footage they gave him more money to add stuff.

How late did they embargo reviews for that one?

Thanks. About the norm then. This one isn't.
Not including the film festival preview some select people got to see, and get to rave about about a year ago.

Well a lot of fans all over the internet have critized Fantastic Four movie for having made "bad" decisions, so you can just add this embargo to that list lol.

Just 9 more days for the movie!

I won't criticize them for embargo. Probably one of the best decisions they made.

The more people see of this, the less they like, so keeping it hidden for as long as possible is probably smart.

The marketing has made this look like a bad film, but we won't know for a little more than a week how well marketing did their job.

If this is a terrible film that marketing made look like a bad film, they did their job. If this is actually a good film, marketing screwed up big-time.

Josh Trank is not.

True. George Miller filmed the first Mad Max by just taking his camera out onto remote highways across the desolate Australian outback and funded the entire thing himself before finding a distributor. While it was in no way anywhere near as good as the next three Mad Max films, he at least took the time to learn how to direct a film while making it before hitting it big with Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.

Josh Trank directed an indie found footage film and got into directing because of his father's connections. Chronicle wasn't a good crash course since there was little directing technique to it. It was just running the camera and letting the cast carry the film. That's indistinguishable from theater and doesn't teach much about film as a medium. He was ill prepared for a big studio film and had absolutely no idea what he was doing with little vision. When your screenwriter who's also producing shows more passion for the film, when you refuse to apologize for anything people have called you out for, have reportedly had problems with the special effects shows and show an inability to learn from mistakes, despite the film being delayed, yeah, it's safe to say you shouldn't have been directing this film.

First reviews were May 11, the Monday before release.

I think there's a difference between the embargo on critic vs Test screening reactions on Twitter which this reboot clearly lacks.

For the record Mad Max's test screenings were shown back on Aug of 2014. Now we know that those twitter reactions can be over hyped. ASM2's mostly positive initial tweets come to mind. But if Fox can't even scrounge up a few overzealous Fox fans to watch this film and give praise then this reboot is DOOMED!

re: Fury Road

Very strange film festival rules required the embargo for that. It's the only reason reviews weren't out earlier. Fant4stic is not screening at Cannes. Totally different scenario.

Yeah they were in a damned if they did damned if they didnt. It likely is a terrible film. Not enacting a late embargo would have confirmed that it was terrible before the film ever came out. But enacting a late embargo pretty much told people that the studio wasnt confident in the film. So embargo or no embargo this was a no win situation. But they have only themselves to blame. They let Trank create this mess and waited too long to attempt to clean it up.
