In reference to Dr. Doom...
It was difficult to film around Julian's schedule (with him working on Nip/Tuck), as they had plans for him to have a bigger role in this film. They even thought of having him keep on the mask and cape (so another actor could stand in Julian's place), however, Tim and company thought that it would not 'look' right (not fitting in to the modern feel of the movie).
Tim had other ideas about making Dr. Doom look human...
He initially thought of Dr. Doom developing some sort of synthetic skin that he would wear. And even earlier on, he was going to have Doom be a Doombot (with Dr. Doom pulling all the strings back in Latveria). The reveal of the Doombot would have come out of a fight that the F4 would have had with Doom and Thing would have put his hand through his face...
Hmmm... I actually like these last two ideas and it's too bad Tim Story just doesn't have the tools (be it clout or directing skills) to make these kinds of things happen. The frustrating thing is there are a lot of good things about FF:ROTS but just not enough to kick it to the next level where it could have been. I still think it ranks a solid "B" whereas it could have been an "A".
Julian could have made a good Doctor Doom but there were too many negatives to overcome. The first movie saddled him with the unpopular Trump/Doom concept and bursts of silly, uncharacteristic dialogue. The rushed scheduling of the second movie also worked against him. I thought there was a definite improvement from Trump/Doom but he lacked a viable agenda for his arc in ROTSS. While it worked in the comic to have Doom flying around, drunk with power and wreaking havoc, it didn't make sense in the movie with the imminent destruction of the planet. They could have had him challenge Galactus and then get slapped down. Oh well, I am looking forward to Nip/Tuck season 5 anyway.
