Avi's comments on FF2

Malus said:
I'm not worried over whether they can "do" the Silver Surfer & Galactus. They most certainly can do them justice with today's effects without breaking the bank. We've basically seen a Surfer prototype on the Capri Sun commercials and in Terminator 2. Galactus' ship - we've seen that level of effect all the way back to 2001 in 1969. As for Galactus himself , there's bound to be some degree of reinterpretation...What's important to convey is his incomprehensible power. I mean if he steps off his ship with a big "G" on his belt as he did in the original comic, audiences will howl with laughter.
My concern is more for how they handle the actual story, specifically establishing that the FF are now experienced superheroes. A one minute montage-early in the film- of the FF in numerous battles with an assortment of bad guys would go far in establishing this.

I agree. The effects shouldn't be too tough (Other than making sure Galactus doesn't come off as cheesey), but the real challenge is that such a story needs to be EPIC, so all of the other elements have to be scaled up.

And certainly the characters we saw in the last movie simply aren't up to it yet.

On one hand, this is exactly what the FF need to make them really become the FF we know, but, if done halfway, it could have some real problems.

It's a big challeng and a big risk. If done right, it could result in us really seeing the Fanatastic Four as we've been hoping.

I just hope the studio is up to the task.

It was 15 years ago so imagine where they could go with it now

Cool!!! The big problem I've always had with CGI is the movement of the characters. I'd like to see them have an actor on set with a green suit with some motion capture sensors going through all the motions and then they can lay the Surfer over that. Since he is basically human, that shouldn't be a tough task, and I think they could make him look great relatively easily.

The Surfer's a much easier character than any of the 4 primaries (except for maybe Sue).

Exactly....that right there makes me very excited with where they could go with SS......BUT........if it takes away from the focus of what and who the F4 are....if it takes away AT ALL from Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny.....then I will not be a happy camper with the sequel, no matter how COOL the SS looks on the big screen.....ALREADY I'm seeing the focus pulled away from the 4 ..... and if that continues then Fox has screwed another film.

I know exactly what you mean.

Now that they've established the characters, I think it really opens things up.

There was an interesting comment from Jessica Alba on the commentary in which she complained that every scene she had with Chris seemed to be confrontational, but they really needed to do that to establish the characters. Now things can get a lot more interesting.

If done right, it will be very interesting to see how these characters react to and interact with this new character.

I understand your concerns because, let's face it, the film-makers haven't yet shown their ability to weave a truly compelling story, but the Surfer provides great raw material. Let's just hope they know what to do with it.

I definitely think that since what we are seeing here is 15 years old, we can definitely look forward to a much smoother movement on screen.

I think having Story on from the very beginning, the new writer's seeming ability to write to the family aspect hopefully will quell my slight thoughts toward negativity in the area of relationships.....my hopes are high.....I just hope that they show me something soon that will keep them there....

On specific thing that really encourages me is that I have heard Tim Story specifically comment on the Thing and say that in future movies he will be more comfortable with being the Thing.

I want to see him joking about his appearance and referring to himself as "bashful Benjy" etc. (but with the underlying insecurity still there).

There was a lot of basic exposition that had to take place in the first film, and now we should be ready to really take off.:)

Ben's insecurity comes out when talking with Sue, they need to have at least one of those talks....just to really set in stone the unique relationship they have...

The first movie had exposition???????? damn I must have missed that....:o :)

The thing is SS's story is a complicate done and ya can;t just throw him in there so i expect that a big of back-story on him plus what has been happening with Doom in the previous 2 years will take up part of the first half of the movie

I don't see the back story of Doom taking that long.....do some flashbacks, on all of the primary players, takes a couple of minutes each....if it takes more than that......they better have a much longer movie this time around.....

Better have a longer movie period. At least 2 to 2 1/2 hours of movie, not counting perviews, credits, ect.:) A solid 2, 2 1/2 hour movie they can cover much.

Depends what the Editing idiots at Fox do. You know my fellings about them and the 1st movie. Oh my God. Just looked at Mojo for X-Men totals. Update below. 120.1 million.

Personally, I would prefer they avoid SS backstory.

I would like the viewers to be on the same page as the heroes - discovering bits and pieces as we go.

I don't see a problem (and in fact see an advantage) in portraying the Surfer as a mysterious, powerful alien.

Yeah you cut and pasted them from mine....

The thing with Doom is there is a lot to cover, from how they get him out of the casing to how and why he took over Latveria to how he came by his new armour

That could work but if the story were to be the one where Doom steals SS's power a little more about him would have to known but i suppose they could reveal that bit by bit throughout the course of the film

The people of Latveria are metal workers.....show a couple of guys welding it open.....next shot......a hospital room......next shot.....speaking to the people of Latveria and a roar of hooray goes up from the crowd....next shot....Reed and Sue watching TV....Reed is tinkering with some gadget....Sue picks up a cup of coffee....it falls to the ground....Ben and Johnny come in to see what happened......all look at Sue follow her eyes to the television and on the news is "Latveria gets new leader" and there is Doom.....DONE.....

but no one would know why they made him leader and how he came by the new armour,i think it would take a bit more to give him some depth rather than gloss over his arc

Yeah it's not overly hard to get Doom into his armor. Maybe he needs it to hide the disfigurment of having his metal skin pulled off and to help focus his electrical powers. And you can just have Doom as an hier to the Latverian throne or anything really.

I sure hope that's the track they're on.

That was an outline of what would happen....but in a 2 hour movie, you have more than 15 minutes of screen time for this.....and we have another movie that is a movie about someone else other than the 4 themselves....

2 minutes off the ship in the hands of the metalworkers.....3 minutes in the hospital, sees himself you hear a blood curdling scream....RICHARDS....2 minutes metal workers working on a suit of armour....servants helping him into his suit....."Sir, we are so happy you have come home to your people"......"we've awaited your return for too long".....goes back to the 4 in New York, living their lives....doing their thang.....back to Doom in Latveria....among the people....ya know....3 minutes working the crowd so to speak.......he looks to the sky......switch to Reed on a computer screen, sees something unusual....Johnny notices.....Ben notices.....Sue notices......SS is on his way.......back to Latveria.....5 minutes Doom is ushered in as leader....the crowd is estactic.....CNN is there.....and then to my original plan.....and you have Doom....SS (first glimpse)......(of course a little more detail)....but doesn't take more than 15 minutes of screen time.....

Yeah, I was thinking more of the traditional story. In the Doom version though Doom might not really know much either. He could detect the strong energy source and try to take it for himself.

That could actually create an interesting allegory. In his blind quest for power, Doom could unwittingly sentence himself to death along with the rest of the world.

Creative film-makers could possibly draw connections to the cold-war in which, in our efforts to protect ourselves and our power, we put the world in potential jeopardy.

You wouldn't need to parallel to the Cold War....you could do that with current events as we speak....

It's really something of a universal theme. We could list hundreds of examples.

Consider a businessman who, in and effort to enrich himself and his family embezzles money from his company. He then loses his job and goes to jail leaving his family penniless.

Heck, you don't have to look any farther than ENRON.

That is true but not many go to rule a nation. Unless he kept Latveria off the balance sheet ;)
