I think it's because Denzel Washington I suppose to be playing him in the movie.
But ya gotta remember movies like to stray away from the original story of the games they are based on.

Actually Denzel was in talks to do the movie, but it was never revealed which character he was in talks for...for some reason everyone assumed MC, instead of the much more likey Sgt. Johnson, or even Commander Keyes...

Denzel is too white to be Sgt. Johnson. I would go with Charlie Murphy or Samuel L. Jackson before I'd go with Denzel. Although the voice actor for Johnson would make a good Black Sarge too.
