FOX's Marketing Technique: "What Happens Last/Remembered First?"

It seems to me Xmen 3 comes up over in the Superman boards just as much if not more then the Superman comes up over here and most of the time in a more malevolent fashion

This from Kaptain Krypton over in the Superman returns Spoilers

Spider-Man may have made a lot of money. Then again so did Titanic...and Episode I (two movies you will never find in my DVD collection). I liked Spider-Man, but next time the dialogue needs to be written by someone who doesn't attend middle school. Half of the fan base of Superman doesn't agree because we're ALL very territorial and typically very opinionated (see: this board). Given the advance script review for X-3 and the fact that Halle Berry gets a say in what's happening in it, I'd be surprised if it breaks $200 million. Even though the fans of SR are divided, 98% of them will pay to go see it. Money knows no opinions once it's in the register (even if they think the movie sucks, they've already donated to the cause). Also, worldwide box office will probably be lucrative considering Superman is one of the most widely known fictional characters in existence (next to Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan). If the quality of the film is good, than it will have legs. They will market the thing to death, so I guarantee you that by June every man, woman, and child not residing in a cave will know about it.

this from Pickle El again over there not in here

Marvel is the one stinking up the place...I place full responsibility of the genre potentially suffering on Avi Arad's shoulders. I mean just look at what he is going to do with ONLY X-Men. Observe:

X1 2000
X2 2003
X3 (Not yet released,2006)
Wolverine Solo Project (Not yet released)
Magneto Solo Project (Not yet released)

OVERKILL

You're completely taking my comments out of context.....Visionary went to the SR boards to prove SR and X3 won't do as well at the BO because comic book movies are being played out. Hence the comment. And I don't think you can really argue with me on facts. People WILL get sick if Avi Arad keeps pumping out 4 movies every year to make a buck.

what formula????????
where is it showing

It really is no different and god, it is more then the S Superman, has issues suroundin him, this trip and 6 year absceanse after he promised the President he would never leave, the kid, other issues that have all been brought up over there.

You really need to read the Premiere/Wizard articles over in the SR boards....you'll feel much better.

Pickle first of all sorry for taking a statement out of context that was not my intencion just an example of X men coming up over on the Superman boards.

It obviously happens here as well ,Superman being bad mouthed on some level.

i just wish, we could all get along but since that isn't likely I favor a singular area for this kind of talk a showdown topic that is crete stricity for people to flame out and troll about... this way maybe just maybe it keeps people out of fights in the main spoiler areas.

I actualy tried to do that for FF vs BB since the flameing was taking us all away from the topics at hand

and it goes both ways, I see X men being brought up in a negative way over in the Superman Returns area I feel a need to retaliate..

as I am sure die hard Superman fans feelthe need to retaliate if they see something negative over here

And why was X-Men's trailer so well recieved? Because it was nothing but action.

They are attempting to counter actual art, with over blown trailers because lets face it, this movie is a cluster**** in an attempt for Fox and Ratner to save face. I mean damn if you showed the first trailer to the mass public for Batman Begins and FF they probably would of thought that FF looked more fun. How did that turn out both quality and money wise?

They are throwing money and saying yes to things they wouldn't have a year ago, to spite Singer and because they fear they could actually be killed at the box office.

On the other hand Singer Superman Returns couldn't careless about X-Men 3, and they are just attempting to produce something that won't fade away in a few years.

man oh man you just aint making to much sense

Consdier this FF was more fun, if you were looking for fun. The audience laughed it up in FF and certinly not in a bad way

batman begins was a better film. not exactly what I would call..fun, it was dark it was gritty I don't think to many critics called it a fun thrill ride

but both movies overall made about the same amount of money when one looks at what was spent, Batman only made about 52 Million more, and geuss what...thats right it cost 52 million more to make.

So um..profit wise both movies made about the same , and FF had more competion around (war of the worlds right before it CC right after it) it but a better start date admitedly.

you want proof ceck out Box office Mojo

BB

Production Budget: $150 million

$205,343,774 Domestic
$166,510,009 Overseas

FF
Production Budget: $100 million
$154,694,942 Domestic
$174,802,303 Overseas

hmmm

For all the precious talk (in the BB forum) of a European audience they actualy found FF more overseas interesting..SHOCKING

But only the domestic take is considered when deciding a movie's success or not. The overseas profits usually go to sources other than the originating studio. Therefore FF made its most money for someone other than Fox.

The first X-Men film had a production budget of 75 million and had a domestic take of 154 million which means it had a better profit margin than FF.

I tend to agree, but em.. anytime you try to discout Overseas money around here people seem to get very very pissed

Well considering the slump that the box is in you better be including overseas...lol.

Hmmmmm....
icon_mistrust.gif
you read awfully familiar....

You are right Hugh's Mrs there are a variety of services that are involved with international distribution for feature films. There are post services for the film abroad because other countries require edits whether it's the studio's decision or the country itself (islamic countries most notably). Media Management, film development/processing, foreign streams, transportation, etc.... The list goes on so much in regards to just the logistics, there are also "taxes" that are incurred. Also the exhibitor needs their cuts. Not including the expenses for political and industrial reasons.

Then there's the big distribution price tag from certain studios that help distribute these films to those countries. SONY for instance has a monopoly on the Pacific Rim, even more so than FOX. Universal dominates the European Market as Warner is so worldwide that they rarely use another studio for distribution and may very well be the only studio that is capable of doing this but even they still have to incur other expenses.

Internationally there is a profit or studios wouldn't bother exhibiting in foreign lands yet when you see these grand totals they have to be a high total in order for their to be a profit. Thus why Domestic Box office is far more important to a studio than internationally. A majority of the procedes go right into the studio's pockets with no middleman.

Which is why Van Helsing will never have a sequel. Internationally successful but Domestically disappointing.

Is FOX Aiming To Steal Thunder With "The Back-Door Approach?"
***

This Friday marks the debut of the first trailer for Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. Ironically enough, this clip is debuting a month earlier than X3's trailer (due next month), while the film comes out a month after X3's May 26th screening date. It appears that Warner Bros. is going for the "early bird" approach, in an effort to drum up as much buzz as possible for their feature. Their website is fully active, and the media has been inundated with stills from the production.

In stark contrast, the other major comic book film of 2006--X-Men 3--has had no pictures released to represent it, nor has a full-fledged website been launched. Admittedly there has been very little visibility for this tentpole production--even the plot is shrouded in secrecy. It would seem that FOX is woefully behind its competitors, considering that their project hits theatres first.

For many people, this signals an unmitigated disaster, and understandably so. Unlike Superman Returns or Ghost Rider, X-Men 3 has a powerful momentum going right now, and a gigantic mainstream audience. It has remained at the apex of 2006's most anticipated films for months now, all without any promotion. So it would seem that FOX would be smarter to capitalize on that anticipation. Instead, their silenced delay on releasing any offical pictures or details communicates to some that the studio is trying to hide a Catwomanesque-mess until the very last minute.

However, instead of writing X3 off as a failure waiting to happen--I'd like to interject another plausible reason for FOX's delaying: Could it be that they are adopting the old adage "What happens last is remembered first" for their marketing technique?

Think about it: When the trailer for Superman Returns is released there will be certain pandamonium--be it good or bad. However, when FOX strikes with their trailer next month, what will happen to that buzz? It will be diverted--and, at least temporarily, FOX will have effectively stolen its competitors' thunder. If X3's first trailer and official stills are mindblowing, the hype will reach all-time highs with an already-hungry fanbase.

Do you think this could feasibly be FOX's plan?

no. its like this. the 2 biggest-or in light of recent events-thought to be the 2 biggest-films of this holiday season were potter and kong. superman was with potter, and only in idipot would put x3s trailer with supermans so they went with kong....from a statistical standpoint, on charts superman gained more buzz fromthe trailer then x3 did, but its online buzz isnt as big as superman trails most charts, but then again that could be blamed for harrypotter was 2 times bigger then kong at the box office so far,so its been seen by many more people. doesnt matter. warners didnt do the early bird approach, it just made alotta sense to do it. the early bird approach woulda been a trailer with batman.

but i think x3 and superman will having very similar marketing patterns. both waited to release a teaser and short teaser at that. both released teaserposters around the same time that were basicaly the same thing. both have super bowl trailers, both have trailer in march....

niether x3 or superman need ANY promotion to get buzz....release em tomorrow people will go by name alone. i disagree when you say "unlike superman returns, x3 has a powerful momentum and gigantic mainstream audience". personally i feel both have both. superman has a HUGE audience, and momentum.

but to some up, they stole no buzz cause their 2 separate movies released 5 weeks apart. any buzz that was made for superman from the trailers still there;it just made more more buzz for x3. the movies are-like batman begins and fantasic four were-too different to really be able to steal eachothers buzz. supermans media onslught(magazine and press-free marketing) is going to bigger then any film of next summer....it has 5 cover shots on mags. for next febuary alone. but fox is a fantasic marketing group and ill sure the hype for x3 will be massive, especiallyafter an actionless may weekend. dont worry, buzz for both is already through the roof. if it werent pirates, x3 would be THE sequel of next year(and that means something in a place where in 2003/2004/2005, a sequel has been box office king) and superman is the cgifest/action of next year...which makes it a lock for a huge box office as well. but for any to "write x3 off as a failure"s being unrealistic. it might not be a great movie, but a box office failure?youve gotta be kidding.no worries, even wb and fox get along, despite these rumors of fox wanting to beat wb to the screen. w.b.did after all, play fantasic fours final trailer infront of batman begins.

Its funny Online the most Popular Teaser seems to be X-Men 3. But if you ask anyone who are A) NOT a Comic Book Fan B) does NOT visit any Message Boards from what I have gathered those types of Movie Fans are more excited for Mission Impossible 3. It seems that the NON Die Hard Fans for Superman Returns really did not care much at all with the Teaser. But in the End it did its job to let People know there js a new Movie coming. Pirates Of The Carribean 2 would be the Second best for the Non Comic Fans who are more excited for Mission Impossible 3. This Summer is going to be one Wild Box Office Ride

meh. pirates wastn even a teaser really.

anyway from the people i talked 2 days ago at hp,they wanted to know the most about SUPERMAN,wanted to see POSEIDON, and demanded when x3 is released. these are theater employees.

I'm so pissed, here in Mexico none of the King Kong screenings have the X3 teaser   They have:
The DaVinci Code. Looks great.
Mission Impossible 3. Really crappy.
Munich. Looks good.
Superman Returns. Meh.
Why no X3? :( I hope the people at FOX have better plans for the future I don't want X3 to have the same marketing as F4, I remember that the only time I saw a trailer for F4 was during Robots and it was the teaser, they never showed any of the 3 trailers, I have no idea why. Luckily by the time it was about to be released they started showing a lot of TV ads and it ended up making a lot of money over here but I don't think that's enough for X3, they need to start creating awereness now, they already have the poster and the standee and both get a lot of attention but I seriously think they need to show the teaser. Plus, it's a great teaser, much better than MI:III and SR. Is there a way to contact FOX International or something?

I loved Kong btw.

IMO. It looks like any other action movie, nothing new.

But...but...it has Philip Seymour Hoffman. But what really intrigued me was that it seems they are going back to what made the first movie good instead of that piece of garbage called Mission Impossible II.

The only thing that has me slightly interested is J.J. Abrahams, other than that :down .

Just different tastes then I guess. I loved Mission Impossible so therefore I am going to look forward to sequels.

What happens last/Remembered First?

So Since X3 comes out BEFORE Superman Returns, does that mean people will just forget all about X3? Dont see how this would work out for the better for X3.

I just want to see the teaser on the big screen. I have the feeling that they'll show it with Cheaper by the Dozen 2

The MI:III trailer looked like a repeat of MI:II. The jump he does from the building i could swear is the exact same footage from the second film. :D

With todays news that Bryan Singer is making an appearance at the Wonder Con in SF, i'm a little puzzled why theres no X3 presence at this event. Surely some footage must be complete for public viewing or at the very least a new poster??!

The New York Comic Con is coming up soon and so is Showest. This would be a great podium for fans and media alike to see if X3 is really as good they say it is. Does anyone have any inside info on upcoming appearance by X3 cast/crew at conventions and/or events?
