Okay, I kind of went back on what I said and decided to give this show a chance the other day, despite the stupid controversy surrounding it, because I was just too curious.
Surprisingly, I really dig this. Like, a lot.
As far as the animation is concerned, I think it works. A lot of the clips and trailers that they’ve released really don’t do a proper job showcasing how it looks overall within the context of the series itself. It’s not the greatest ever, and there is a bit of jank here and there with some of the movement and expressions, but it really does serve the feel and look of this world. The art style itself being very much a throwback and blend of the old Steve Ditko and John Romita illustrations also really gives the show that old-school flair and charm that helps it stand out from something a bit more generic like What-If while still feeling modern. It really does feel like watching a living, breathing, moving comic book. At a certain point, I just got so used to it I stopped thinking about it and just got drawn into the world and its characters. As the show goes on, I’m sure it will be further improved and refined, but what we have now ain’t too shabby.
Also, I find the quote from the main actor about the show not being “woke” pretty laughable, as there is a lot of diversity to be found, with the designs of the main, side and background characters, Peter’s best friend is bisexual and a cop slowly drives next to and attentively follows a black teen on his way home within the first 10 minutes of the first episode.
The change of the origin to Peter getting bitten by a spider that comes through a portal created by Doctor Strange fighting an alien threat sometime after Uncle Ben’s death is a little strange (pun not intended), but, other than that, the rest of the show, at least so far, has been pretty low-key and grounded. In spite of any issues I may have, I am willing to see where the show goes before I make any solid judgments.
If a lot of their future animated shows are more like this, which is more confident and has a really good idea of what it wants to be, and less like What-If, which while enjoyable at times is definitely hampered by the one episode per story format and feels very uneven and like people throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks, then I gladly welcome them.
