The Official Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Thread

Talk about all things webslinger here!

kewl artwork.

I'm curious what Rock has to say about this recent turn of events. :D

If Spider-Man unmasks during Civil War, my guess is that the 2017 re-reboot involves Peter Parker dealing with the ramifications of a public identity, and the movie ends with him approaching Dr. Strange to initiate Brand New Day.

The re-reboot sequel would then be the MCU's version of Brand New Day.

This way, Marvel gets to have its cake and eat it too.

I'm expecting a pretty substantial role here. The fact that the press release had to specify he'll first appear in an MCU film...

I think Marvel needs to keep Brand New Day away from everything, it's awful. They should also probably try and avoid messing with their established movie continuity. I like the idea of the solo film dealing with his revealed identity though. It would help make it different from the previous films. But it would be a shame to not get the definitive secret identity Spidey in the solo film, especially when secret identities are so rare in the MCU already.

Haha, I remember he was always the first person around these boards to mock anyone who suggested that Spidey could ever be connected to the MCU.

How would he be introduced though? Full costume for the majority of the film I'm thinking. Like a mystery to the viewer of what he looks like behind the mask. Will the Iron Spider suit be in this? Are they going to rename this movie? A Captain America movie starring Spider-Man and Iron Man ? I get it why they don't want two Avengers films right after each other and Captain America is kind of the Avenger so..

To be fair, it did seem pretty far-fetched and the scenarios people kept dreaming up even moreso. Personally I always felt the possibility of Marvel and Sony working together was a real one but never imagined it would amount to anything more than a glorified cameo. Funny old world.

Amusingly I read an article earlier where Hugh Jackman talked about how cool the Spidey news was. He really wants Wolverine in a crossover sometime. Too bad he's stuck with a bunch of spiteful overlords who will never allow it to happen.

I don't think X-Men/mutants fit into the MCU really. I actually never liked mutants existing with superheroes in the comics either. To me, the mutant story is a real unique sci-fi thing and would lessen/cheapen the importance by mixing it with gamma rays and red skulls and captain americas.

Never read Civil War. Do Spidey and Cap like each other?

Yes, and Spider-man has a big man crush on Cap. He was also close to Tony and initially sides with him in the Civil War.

This famous panel is Cap talking to Spider-man during Civil War

The animated series Earth's Mightiest Heroes [on Netflix] has a very good Cap/Spidey centric episode Along Came a Spider that actually uses a variation of this speech.

Hey guys. This is a breakdown of how Spidey may be involved in Civil War from this video, which was posted before the news even broke about Marvel making a deal and seems to line up with other things we've heard.

>In "Captain America: Civil War", Peter is 16 years old and is already Spider-Man. He's living with Aunt May and works at the Daily Bugle. He admires both Captain America, since they were both weak and bullied, and Iron Man, because of his wealth and scientific genius.

>Steve sees a lot of himself in Peter, but thinks he's too reckless and needs training. Stark takes Peter as his protege, loves his quips, and even offers him money since Aunt May had to mortgage the house and Jameson is always screwing him out of money, but Peter refuses because he wants to make it on his own as Uncle Ben taught him.

>Stark develops a suit for Peter, but Steve believes giving him technology rather than training is dangerous. Stark considers Peter the second fastest hero after Quicksilver, and the Spider-Sense makes him nearly uncatchable.

>Peter also has a little crush on Black Widow because of another certain redhead. She thinks it's cute, but kinda' creepy because he's only 16, and it pisses of Hawkeye. The other Avengers don't really like Spider-Man because he's annoying and keeps on quipping.

>Marvel wants to use Norman Osborn as the Lex Luthor of the Marvel universe.

It sounds pretty awesome to me and a perfect introduction into the MCU for Spidey by contrasting him with the other two biggest heroes in the verse, Steve and Tony. I'm sure they both see the great potential in Peter at only 16 years old, he's almost like a fusion between the two of them.

SPOKE MY MIND. After the whole Spider-Man joining MCU/Civil War/Avengers things washing over me, this is the first thing came in mind. MCU has Loki, Ultron, Thanos....but Norman Osborn? That's another dimension :P

Norman looks immensely like Tommy Lee Jones in that panel

Glad spidey is now part of the MCU..but doesn't this now raise the question of where Spider-Man was during the final NY battle in Avengers…..?:hmm

It's possible that Peter hadn't gotten his powers back then.

Also, I think one of the creators for the Daredevil Netflix series mentioned on how, even if Daredevil was operating back then, you probably wouldn't see someone like him fighting on the aliens since he sticks more to street level thugs/criminals.

this is what kinda makes me worried that we'll be seeing another origin story, instead of an established character

Once he's confirmed in Civil War, then no origin is guaranteed for his role in the film and his solo.

Marvel have yet to make a prequel solo film (the ending of TFA made up for that situation) to the current timeline. I doubt they'd start with Spider-Man on top of the fact that he's being rebooted so quickly.

And yeah, I am assuming if they do another origin for the 2017 film it'll take place earlier in the MCU timeline. For some reason.

I think they'll just explain his origins through means of exposition/flashbacks/montages like how they did with the Hulk's in "The Incredible Hulk" rather than actually devoting time out of the main arc to an Origin story itself.

Frankly, the character who I think would be most useful for Civil War is J. Jonah Jameson. Have the Bugle raise some fear mongering about superheroes needing to be registered. Have him tie it into Spider-Man as an example.

I just can't see Spider-Man possibly taking the same role as he does in the comics. The history that makes that work simply isn't there.

I think Black Panther should remain the character stuck in the middle of the Iron Man-Cap conflict because after going global in AOU it makes the most sense. With Spider-man, I would do a small scene where both sides are racing to recruit heroes to their sides. Both approach Spidey, and Spidey (who idolizes both of them) says he cannot pick a side because it is not the right thing to do. He would tell them that heroes shouldn't fight each other, and that his uncle taught him a lesson that is applicable:

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.

Of course Tony and Cap would ignore it, leading to the conflict to continue and grow in the movie. However, by the end, they come to realize the true meaning of that message.
