On a completely random note, I went out with my best friend for her birthday earlier tonight. She ended up telling me that I changed her (deep in the heart of Kentucky) republican grandfather's attitude toward gays for the better.

Shallow is the opposite of deep. A layer of dew or a puddle is shallow whereas an ocean is deep. "Barely shallow", which really doesn't make much sense, implies that the subject is almost deep enough to not be shallow. A layer of dew is extremely thin, thus making it extremely shallow. Any questions?
