Game of Thrones - Non-Booker readers' thread - NO SPOILERS

I really want to get into this show, but I unsubscribed from HBO like two years ago. I loved HBO Go but the HBO channel on Direct TV played the same flipping movies ever day it seemed with little else interesting shown. That was why I canceled my subscription. I am happy they are finally releasing a stand alone subscription in the coming year. But until then I guess I am forced to buy the seasons in DVD or should I just go to the wiki pages and read about what happens up until now? I just got the Telltale game but I heard you need to be familar with the show/books to know what's going on ( which sucks kinda). Any other suggestions to get caught up?

Your local library should have every season on dvd that's out. That's how I watched the first 3 seasons before catching up and watching current episodes.

I purchased the Season 1 DVD shortly after Christmas, but didn't get around to watching the show until last night. I wanted to share my thoughts on the first episode, so here we go with a cross-post:
I've never read the books, and most of the people I know that have won't watch the show because of its grossly uncensored nature, but I decided on a whim to ignore the uncensored nature of the show and delve into it anyway, but have been too busy to watch the show before now.

As someone who hasn't read the books, it took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on at a few different points in the story, but there wasn't anything that completely left me scratching my head.

It can be tricky sometimes to introduce a bunch of characters practically all at once without running the substantial risk of losing people who aren't already familiar with the book's, but the show managed to pull that feat off with flying colors.

Speaking of the characters, there were several who stood out for me, particularly in terms of not quite knowing where they stand. All 3 Lannisters fall into this category, as do the Targaryreans.

This feeling of not quite knowing where the characters stand was exacerbated by my familiarity with two of the actors in question, Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage (particularly Headey, whom I think I will forever picture as Sarah Connor and Queen Gorgo from 300), and it made for interesting viewing since I wasn't sure whether to like the characters or dislike them.

Overall, I liked the episode - which felt very reminiscent of the Pilot for Starz's short-lived Camelot series as well as Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy and the first book in Irene Radford's Merlin's Descendants series - and am glad I bought the first season on DVD and look forward to watching the rest of the episodes.

Not knowing how to feel about the characters is one of the great things about the show/books. Very few characters are decidedly "good" or "bad". And even when you think you've figured out which category a character belongs in, that can change. The characters are all great in that sense. Everyone has a very strong viewpoint with purposes and reasoning that you can understand.

OMG The 2-Minute Trailer for Season 5 was absolutely incredible.

WOW, this season looks like it's going to be amazing.

I assume trailers are allowed in here? Possible Spoilers. Watch at your own risk.

Actor Danny Dyer said he auditioned three times for Game Of Thrones.

My season 4 blu-ray just arrived. I hadn't bought a GoT season since 1 but this past season was so good I had to get it.

i just finished up all the seasons this month thanks to the hype tv club
i'm actually considering reading the books just for all the backstory that i find interesting

Do it, CC! I really do love the show, but I much prefer the books. Sometimes when watching the show I feel like I wouldn't be able to keep track of a lot of the characters if it weren't for my knowledge of the books. Of course, I can't be sure of how true that is since I can't erase my knowledge of the books and re-watch the show, lol.

I'm not going to have time to read any more of the books before the next season airs, got 3/4 of the way through Book 2. They're excellent though (so far).

I've just finished the penultimate episode of Season 3 ("The Rains of Castamere"), and wanted to come talk about my reaction to it. I ended up inadvertently spoiling myself on the episode's climax (and wasn't entirely sure if I wanted to watch the episode at all as a result, if only because I was annoyed that characters I like keep getting killed off while characters I can't stand survive), but can now say that I've actually seen stuff that was way more violent and gratuitous, both on cable TV and on broadcast TV (the conclusion of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Dirty Girls" immediately comes to mind), to the point that I found myself mentally rolling my eyes after watching a Youtube video of people's real-time reactions to the episode's conclusion when it originally aired.
