Sci-Fi Gareth Edwards's Jurassic World Rebirth

I have been saying this won't crack a billion for a while. With a B Cinemascore, mid 700s looks about right. I very much think Superman or FF can beat this if they review well and get solid Cinemascores, reviews, and WOM. Yeah, Jurassic World won't lose money here, but there is a clear decline of interest. They have to do something actually fresh and original with this next time. Cause the same old thing isn't going to move the needle anymore. The Fast franchise is in this exact same position
It funny saying this, because the biggest box office win for the series was when they had an inferior remake of the original. :hehe:

The way with these series is to let them go away for awhile, and then bring back some older actors and hit the nostalgia button.

Not exactly the same as it was the first Jurassic movie since 2001 (or was it 2002....Either way, over 10 years) and they did a good job preying on the nostalgia of the 1st one before that was what literally all of Hollywood was doing. Now, new movies in this series are no longer a novelty. So at this point your 2 options are to like you said, let it die off and come back later. But if you're going to keep making them, you have to do something new and reignite interest.

No Jurassic movie has an original premise outside of the first. That said, if they wanted to keep making them, they'd still make money. If this movie finishes in the 700m range, that's a lot of bank on a rush job. If they can live with 600m plus, they can keep making these indefinitely. Also helps with the theme park presence.

But they won't live in that 600 mil range is the thing. Theyre going from what was a billion to maybe mid 700s. That decline is going to continue unless they change something, and with inflation and increased costs as they are, the budgets are only going to keep going up while interest and BO is going down. They're not losing money NOW, but this isn't sustainable

Yeah, this was positioned as just another Jurassic movie like the 3rd film was in 2001. A one-off.

World broke records cause there was a big gap and the event of a new park opening. Even Dominion was the legacy characters and the finale of that trilogy.

For this, I doubt Universal was expecting World numbers, thus the rush and also why the budget was much lower.

Superman and Fantastic Four both have much more immense pressure as they’re the “new” starts for what has been an extremely rough few years for DC and Marvel.

There is no reason to think the decline would continue to that degree yet. Let's see how the legs are for this one. Let's see the OS numbers. CS is bad but it was for Planet of the Apes last year, and it still had decent legs showing people enjoyed it well enough.

Also I believe the budget for this movie was less then the last one.

Why wouldn't there be? It's been declining every movie, and yeah that might not be 200+ mil everytime, but even if it's down to 650 next time, it's still not stabilizing. So that number will keep going down. There isn't any evidence it will live in this rang long term.

This is under the assumption that no movie can gain if it hits.

W e don't know the floor for this series yet. JP III made Thunderbolts money in 2001. This series in general just has more juice then a lot of other stuff. I still remember the end of the world with TROS when it only made... a billion.

To be fair, that was a bad result and there is a reason we haven't successfully gotten a Star Wars movie in theaters since and it has lived on D+. But that's a discussion that belongs in the Star Wars forum. And sure, it COULD make gains again. But it's unlikely unless something changes. They hit on an actor giving a performance that goes over, New concept, maybe they hit on a director who just aces it. Yes, these things are all possible. But on the current trajectory, unless they just get lucky, they need to do something different.

I caught a matinee earlier. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would although my expectations were fairly low apart from feeling confident it'd be better than Dominion (no surprise, it is). From the get go this seemed like it was going to be like a more fleshed out Jurassic Park III and that's more or less what we got, a back to basics story.

I really thought the main cast did a good job: Johansson, Ali, Bailey, and Friend, but especially Mahershala. I really felt for the guy having lost his entire team by the end of the movie that I was actually bummed out when I thought he was going to die at the end. Of course him surviving was farfetched as all hell but that's what these movies are. Friend also did a worthy job as the token "I will greatly enjoy watching you get eaten" villain.

I actually found myself liking the Spinosaur and Mosasaur team up most out of the dino sequences in the movie but the T-Rex raft scene was also great. I do wish the Spinos resembled the one from JPIII a little more but I get they were going for scientific accuracy.

One thing that truly shocked me was how little the Velociraptors were in this considering they're the second most popular dinosaurs in the franchise. It really reminded me of how the T-Rex got the shaft in JPIII but this was even worse because they maybe had 30 seconds of screentime here. I get that those mutants towards the end were meant to be Raptor/Pteranodon hybrids but they just didn't hit the same.

Overall I'd probably rank this third in the Jurassic franchise just below Jurassic World. World had a more interesting story but I'd take Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali over Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as leads any day.

People clapped and cheered at the end of mine... I was gone the moment credits rolled. Movie has no real tension if you have your brain on because you know certain characters have plot armor on plot armor.
Nobody clapped in my showing. In fact people left at the end of the credits.

I grow more appreciation for The Lost World with every bad sequel, I must confess. I wasn't a fan of that movie mostly ever. But comparing it with what we have gotten since....we didn't know how good we had it

Saw this yesterday. It's better than I expected, but is pretty much the movie I thought it'd be outside of being less focused on the mutant dinos as much as the marketing made it seem. Had it not been rushed out and had another year or so to flesh everything out from the studio, I think it could've been way better. A completely isolated movie like that is this film's biggest point of strength.

All the action scenes were fun. It was nice to get actual dinosaurs in a freaking movie about dinosaurs. Especially in more natural situations instead of Chris Pratt on a motorcycle running away from a raptor that's targeting him because of a laser.

And it was also refreshing to see the franchise break away from the "dinosaurs only eat bad people" rule from Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. It was rough watching the girl get killed by the Spinosaur and the guy get swallowed whole by the Quetzalcoatlus but it brought back that sense of danger that had been missing from the last two movies where any character who was a decent person had plot armor.

Dude, the girl getting eaten by the Spinosaur got me. I did not see that coming, I just thought it'd be a dick and take their supplies.

They really weren't acting fast enough getting to shore, even after Jonathan Bailey was yelling at the rest of them to move because the Spinosaurs were amphibious. When I saw that one Spino wake up in the background when she was trying to get the supplies on shore, my skin crawled.

Funny enough, I felt nothing for that scientist who got killed in the beginning.

The D-Rex seeing that guy littering:

Ummmm I’m pretty easy when it comes to these movies. This one I didn’t care for. I dont think the cast had much chemistry especially the family. The movie lacked in energy which just seems to be Gareth Edwards style at least from the other two movies of his I’ve seen (Godzilla, The Creator). Best scene might have been the raft and T. rex. Didn’t like the look of the film either. It wants to get the series back to JP1 level but they needed more time to cook.

Oh and some a hole thought it cool to throw candy at people in the theater, always a great time…

Just saw it, and my short summary:

Action sequences mostly well done. I didn't like 1, but it's cause it felt like a retread of previous one in earlier movie. Only worse. Story was fine, characters mostly trash. Just nothing to anyone. I like Ali and Scarjo enough as actors, but generic characters and that goes for everyone. Several characters very unlikable to hilarious degrees.

In the end, it's okay. Not great. Not awful. It exists.

2.5/5
