The Last Jedi General Episode VIII News/Speculation/SPOILER Thread - - Part 11

I loved The Force Awakens and had such high hopes considering how it left off. Was it perfect? No. But I still loved it, even if it did borrow the plot of A New Hope and gave it a new twist. I think that's what makes this even more frustrating to me. We spent three years waiting to see what would happen next after being left with a cliffhanger in a way that had never been done in the Star Wars movies before. I'm starting to think that it definitely would've been for the best if they just had JJ direct all three movies because at least then it would've been one consistent vision for all three movies.

I wonder how much was Abrams’ story outline and how much was Johnson. If Johnson is the one who singlehandedly took things in this direction, then I’m pretty pissed at him no matter how much I like Looper.

I'm not sure, but the force projection stuff definitely seems like Rian Johnson to me.

Someone leaked a few really crappy quality scenes from their theater - mostly Rey and Kylo stuff.

I'm still really looking forward to this, especially the force bond stuff. It sounds fascinating.

Except it left both being uninteresting. Rey's character has been screwed over big time.

Wasn't much too screw over to begin with, the most uninteresting and least talented protagonist in the entire history of star wars.

Though Finns not far off.

I want to like both, I'm British, I just can't, they are woeful. I literally had seen tfa once before last night so I gave it another chance, the acting level was something out of a bad soap opera.

You could tell there were millions of miles between their performances and that of actual good actors like ford.

The stuff with Rey and Kylo I feel is the only really good and intriguing part of the film. But it amounts to nothing much at all.

Snoke [BLACKOUT]was nothing but an Emperor rip-off anyway, Kylo is a much more interesting antagonist[/BLACKOUT], especially after the events of this movie. He [BLACKOUT]served his purpose[/BLACKOUT].

As for Rey, well, now we know that she's a big deal because [BLACKOUT]of her own talents, and not because she inherited a considerable quantity of midichlorians from someone else[/BLACKOUT].

Oh, another small thing that I disliked... [BLACKOUT]Phasma[/BLACKOUT]. Yeah. What a waste.

Can't quote the guy as it's from the older version of the thread, but the "The Force Awakens FELT like Star Wars!" dude...

Yeah, and just about every twitter reaction and critical review is saying this feels even more in-line with George's "feel", that Star Wars vibe. What's your point?

I haven't seen the flick yet, so sure, defending it's premature. But just look at the damn responses, fans and critics alike. You're an outlier here. Which is fine, but the whole "SW is dead!" thing is a bit much. People obviously disagree in large part with that statement.

I think the complaints in TFA about her were overblown because I logically assumed a lot of her shortcoming would be explored here, in fact creatively there was ample opportunity to dig into her and find out who she was as a person. There were some nice character moments in TFA that were absent in this film, like her playing with the helmet in Jakku. But she's the exact same character by the end of this film, we know nothing more about her, where she came from, how she became proficient in sensing the force so quickly and using a lightsaber, she didn't even have any fun character moments. It's a dramatic performance with not much drama about it. It pisses me off Daisy has been screwed over like this, she deserves for Rey to be a fleshed out character.

At this point nothing can kill star wars.

Perhaps after they over do it over the next decade and people don't like rians trilogy then maybe it will crumble.

Skywalkers fate will always be in the back of my mind in the originals now, which is a shame.

Damn I just watched a bunch of leaked clips, a lot of Rey and Kylo stuff. So freaking good. I loved both characters in TFA and the performances by Adam and Daisy. But man in these clips I saw they are superb acting wise. Really bringing it.

And I watched the scene of Kylo and Rey discussing her parents. Seems very clear especially now watching it that Kylo has just really lied to her and taken advantage of her emotional state. Convincing her that she is from nothing and a nobody.

Mark Hamill: “That’s the hard part [about playing and being associated with a character for so long]. You don’t want to admit how possessive you’ve become. There are times where you go, ‘Really? That’s what they think of Luke? I’m not only in disagreement – I’m insulted.’ But that’s the process and you thrash it all out.” (October 30, 2017)

I hoped to watch the movie today's evening but fate (and football) prevented that - I crushed my left knee during the game. I was so irritated yesterday but today no more. reading your comments it seems that I have nothing to worry about - maybe TLJ will be the first SW movie I will not go to the cinema?

How was action, mate?

Rian Johnson is a guy who has only made R-rated movies (except Brothers Bloom which is for adults despite not being rated that way) and written for a TV-MA tv show before. A lot of what I'm reading is a guy who has no experience in family entertainment at all trying to make a family film, complete with some of the bathos from the Marvel universe. Which was a concern of mine that I'll know more about in a couple of days.

I had this feeling when news about Rian moving to separate SW trilogy and JJA returning for IX arrived. I suspected his ideas are too "radical" for the main story in light of Hamill's comments.

I've long said that Luke's journey will juxtapose with Obi-Wan's. Not his father or anyone else. And Obi-Wan is a great man and a great Jedi.

We'll see how I feel about things on Friday.

Nobody seems to be saying great things about Rey in this movie and that's just sad and not acceptable to me for a movie to do that. Then again with Mr. Johnson - look at his filmography - the female characters are not great characters. That's a concern I take with me going into every Rian Johnson movie.

Daisy Ridley said she cried (happily) when she found it it was Abrams and not Rian Johnson like she thought that was directing Episode IX:

Ridley cried when she heard Abrams was coming back. "Everyone was saying it was going to be Rian and everything, so I was genuinely quite surprised," she says, "and was like 'Oh my God!' and I started crying immediately with three people in the office. And they were like, 'What the **** just happened?' So I emailed J.J. saying, 'Oh my God I am crying.' And he goes, 'Oh my God, me too.' And then we had a conversation a few days later and we stay in touch. But we stayed in touch the whole time anyway."

When reading through this thread today....I saw people upset that Luke dies. The first thing I thought of was....Obi-Wan died in ANH. And I wondered if they were as upset when he died.

I've read that Rey and Finn don't talk to each other in this movie? Is that true?

Rey's reaction and interaction with Han and Finn in TFA was very good.

Obi-Wan didn't have the history of three movies in Hope.

Kylo Ren and Knights of Ren were filmed in a fight scene with Rey and Luke on Ahch-To during mid-2016. There was some minor footage and reports of it out of Ireland that those of us who followed the production back in 2016 knew about. Adam Driver was spotted there out with Daisy Ridley too.

It was obviously taken out of the film - no reports mention it for the movie - and they went in a different story direction.

That's not an apples to apples comparison. Star Wars was just a singular film in 1977 with no chapter insinuations and no history to it. It was an event film because no one had ever seen anything like that. Obi Wan had his story responsibilities as a mythical figure that mentors a young and naive hero against the empire. His death is serviceable to that story.

Luke Skywalker today is a 40 year old character with a wealth of story line attached to him, his father and his mother. Generations of people have an expectation that his cinematic bow, if needed, would come about in a meaningful and dramatic fashion that would service those decades of followers. Its just not the same thing by any stretch.
