If the Threepio & R2 are on Yavin base, how do they hook up with Leia & the Tantive 4?
[BLACKOUT]Because it is Bail's ship, probably already on Yavin, with Leia. We just don't see her there.[/BLACKOUT]

I just got back from the theater and it's now my second favorite Star Wars movie behind Empire Strikes Back.

My only disappointment is that we didn't get any badass scenes with Tarkin.

Are there any novels or comics about Chirrut and Baze?

The scene of Jynn and Cass on the beach waiting for the shockwave ughh

Got out of my 2nd time seeing it a little while ago. Good lord it get's better with each viewing.

I did hear one young kid ask his mom what happened to Jynn & Cass in that scene and she had to tell them they died.

I do think because they allowed them to kill off these characters this way in the film that this is will be a movie that is going to stick for younger kids for a lifetime because they allowed them to go that dark. Much like finding a comic book where the hero dies in the end for the first time.

Something like experiencing all the main characters dying and not getting the usual happy Disney ending will probably change a lot of kids for a lifetime.

Personally didn't think the first part/planet jumping was that bad. I think it was appropriate for the type of story they were trying to tell. Don't know if having a crawl could maybe have alleviated the need for that altogether or at least help explain why.

But I do understand that you couldn't really do a crawl and have that prelude bit with Krennic coming to get Galen.

I think this opening without the crawl is really what was the most jarring thing of the movie. The way it and the title was handled I think play a part in the really jumpy start besides the planets which I was fine with those parts.

I think the whole opening would have felt much more seamless had they had a crawl with a little background on Krennic and Galen like an excerpt from Catalyst for those who didn't read that.

Would have also done wonders for the book for those who wanted to know more about the crawl. I think the flow to the opening would have felt better if there wasn't a sudden stoppage to show the title in space and the cold open.

Hopefully they will learn from this one what didn't work and go back to the old way of opening a Star Wars film.

Didn't Bail say when talking to Mon Mothma he was returning to Alderaan to get her though? Might be wrong but I thought he did. They may not have explained in the movie but I assumed the droids went with him from Yavin to get her and left from there.

They could have, actually. The crawl could have been a short summary of the story from "Catalyst". The opening scene with Krennic finding Galen would fit perfectly then.

The film assumes that the audiences have already read "Catalyst" (which is a perfect set-up of the relationship between Galen and Krennic). Still a small critique here for jumping straight into the opening scene without providing any background info (not until later on through the film).

True true, and I do need to read that. I think I was thinking mainly in the context of helping set up the whole fact that 'Cassian is trying to track down rumors of a defected imperial pilot with information from the head scientist on on a secret imperial weapons project'. Basically a lot of the up front exposition up to the point that they go to Jeddah... they could have explained in a crawl for the most part, and we could have been given a little more backstory on the temple and Saw and his clan. Felt like his character was wasted a little bit.

I might feel different after the next viewing... who knows. I've been known to miss things on first viewing when it comes to dialogue because I'm so focused on the visuals, but I felt like we didn't get a clear enough setup of what the state of the Alliance is at - and that could have been addressed in the crawl as well. Maybe I was just looking for that because it feels like the Rebels show has been building building building, and I wanted a better lay of the land 2 years down the line.

Overall though... loved it. I think my first reason for loving SW at the age of 3 in 77 was the visual.. the hardware, the ships, the guns... it wasn't the jedi mysticism angle or anything like that. And that reigned true even for Empire, which I think I liked for the Battle of Hoth and sweet looking snowspeeders and AT-ATs more than anything. And this movie goes straight to that initial hook for me.

The crawl wasn't needed, because this is not a part of the Skywalker saga, these are the grunts.

It wasn't needed but it was a little jarring to not hear the classic John Williams theme blaring during the opening credits.

I feel it caught everyone in the theater off guard.

He says he is returning to Alderaan. Which we know he does, he has to be there to die. He mentions Leia. But only in terms of telling someone to get Obi-Wan.

Leia's ship is with Raddus, who arrives first.

The crawl wasn't needed and I felt the musical chime that plays when we see the very first shot of the film works perfectly. Very Star Wars.

The Rogue One title card, on the other hand, was awful. It should have been a different font, and it should have been on a black screen, not in space (unless we had the camera Pan up to space and then Rogue One fades into the shot and fades back out 6 seconds later and we cut to black. Movie continues....that would have been much better).

I don't know guys. I don't have any desire to watch this again. I dread having to sit through more dullness. There's an 80-90 minute movie in there that's pretty good, if you take away all the bland stuff. Also, judging from the director's past projects, I think it's pretty obvious the best bits of this movie weren't of his doing lol.

As one who liked the idea of a lack of a crawl, I think the movie could have used it.

Title card was jarring, not having the scroll was ok.

Keep the lack of scroll... then place Title Card at the end like a Nolan film.

Then you lose the Star Wars ending, which was perfect.

I didn't feel either way about the crawl going in. Did feel weird without the music though. I think even TCW cartoon opening at least had a better feel to it (and it had no real crawl).

On the whole though it was fine... and agree when the R1 card came up, font was weak.

On the whole, obviously felt like a different type of storytelling, almost like a mission report. And that's fine for being so "war" focused.... last act broke that feel to some degree.

I'm also getting tired of the heroes dressing up as bad guys and sneaking in. We got it in ANH, RO, and apparently we'll be getting it again in EP 8. Sigh.

That is 3 movies, one not even out yet. By the way, you should have included RotJ. :cwink:

It worked in Star Wars because two stormtroopers walked in the Millennium Falcon and two troopers came out with a wookie as prisoner. In Rogue One, a clean shaved imperial officer and a trooper go in the cargo ship to inspect it and the imperial officer walks out with a beard. It was odd that nobody noticed how different that guy looked.
