Now that we saw how the Death Star plans were stolen does anyone else want to see what happened between ESB and ROTJ? I loved Shadows of the Empire, both the game and book, always thought Dash Rendar was pretty cool and I think it might actually make for an interesting movie.

Yes absolutely, I could always enjoy another Luke Skywalker adventure.

So I saw this in 4DX last night in the first showing in Times Square at 7 PM and it was an experience. My theater wasn't huge with hype as we were all investing with the visuals onscreen.

Two characters I did attach myself to was Donnie Yen as Chirrut Îmwe who is one of the coolest characters this film introduces. He’s like Daredevil mixed with Hawkeye where he’s blind yet skilled with a staff and a crossbow and charismatically making jokes about it. Another one is Alan Tudyk as the voice of K-2SO who is personally my favorite Droid introduced into the Star Wars universe to date. He is a hilarious character who unlike 3-CPO or R2-D2, helps out on the action and joins in the fights. He is completely badass. And besides that he is genially funny by having a cynical personality.

I hate fan service in movies especially in large franchises, but boy this delivers nearly as much as Captain America: Civil War does. One of the biggest reveals in the film’s marketing was Darth Vader. James Earl Jones returns to do the voice work of the iconic character, but once he’s shown BOOOOOOOY! I dare you not to get giddy about it. Although he is unnecessary, Vader is bak and is displayed as a threat similar to Freddy Kruger in the first NIghtmare on Elm Street. The film even introduces him in all white fog from the light walking up like he’s a God, Even minor things Star Wars fans love will have something to get a kick out of. There is something for nearly everyone in this.

: I have several major problems with the movie. For one our leads are very undeveloped. Jyn Erso is the audience’s avatar for this adventure and the film tries it’s best to flesh her out into a third dimensional character, but yet it fails to do so somehow. The film is paced way too fast to give her more of a personality than she is showcased to have. Casein Andor who I personally refer to as Han Manolo (if you have seen The Book of Life you’ll get it) isn’t that fleshed out as well which I think is for the best due to the fact that by it’s conclusion you would walk out depressed.

As much as the film’s visual effects are amazing there is one that is incredibly out of place. One of the important Star Wars characters in A New Hope was Grand Moff Tarkin played by Peter Cushing who passed nearly two decades. Since he was crucial to the story, the visual effects studio, Industrial Lights, and Magic came in to recreate him through CG and you can see it. It looks impressive but it isn’t impressive enough to not notice. It’s obvious that he’s CG and the film gives him a long amount of screen time and yet every time he appears you cringe onto how much the CG doesn’t mix well with actual human actors. I commend them for the effort, but it wasn’t effective enough.

Seen the movie twice and this is still bothering me...

Why is the Tantive IV even at Scarif? Bail tells Mon Mothma that he'll dispatch Leia to go get Kenobi, yet at the end of the movie, it's docked with Raddus' flagship over Scarif. It didn't leave with the flagship as R2 and C3PO are on Yavin IV after it's left... I don't get it...

My only theory is that the Tantive IV is sent to Scarif to pick up the plans after the Devastator arrives, but it's weird that this part doesn't fit. Any theories?
I am assuming Leia goes with Raddus or is sent to meet up. Raddus decision is sudden and they take as many ships as they can. They knew there was plans and they had to get away with them.

That's why I said [BLACKOUT]3P0 & R2 should've been on the ship and not Yavin Base. It just feels like there's something missing as opposed to Vader chasing the Tantive IV straight after RO[/BLACKOUT].
They get on the ship. They are in the hangar. All they have to do is get on the ship.

I'd die for a Shadows film... the comic and game were amazing. Only game to rival GoldenEye on the N64. Maybe tweak it a bit to leave out Han/Luke/Leia...

I loved the scene were the two Stormtroopers were nonchalantly discussing an imperial ship class that was being retired, neat real aspect brought to the film.

Have we had any "reviews/opinions" on RO from George?

I would love to see another one between ANH and ESB and then something like Shadows of the Empire between ESB and ROTJ.

The one between ANH and ESB could focus on Vader leading the 501st across the galaxy. It could even be an inversion of Rogue One, where the Empire is the one frantically searching for information on what will eventually lead them to Hoth.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Shadows of the Empire, but it was a terrible game. :funny:

was it a bad game? It's been over 15 years since I've played it but I remember loving the hell out of it. Either way, I always thought it would've made a good movie.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. But I loved it anyways.

might have to find one and play it again haha. I remember I had that one and Rogue Squadron which I thought was amazing as well.
Rogue Squadron was great, and the sequel Rogue Leader on the GameCube might be my favorite Star Wars game. It is fantastic.

I am SO tired of the Star Wars "FORMULA". It's like they are ALL THE SAME MOVIE....oh wait....I was thinking about Marvel. :o

Had ya'll going for a minute....didn't I?

I really liked this one. I'd say a little above TFA (cept I LOVE Rey) and maybe just a little less than ANH (but prolly because ANH was the first taste we had). ESB is still my fav, but really great job on this movie.

I don't get the problems people had with the first 20 minutes or so. It set up the rest of the movie perfectly IMO. It would have been diminished by a full court press from start to finish. I remember walking out of "Gravity" being exhausted and thinking if that movie had lasted 2 hours or so, they would have needed to wheel me out in a stretcher.

The end was awesome. Now I'm going to go watch ANH.

Cheers.

EDIT: I take is back....I hated it.....where's my crawl?

The problem I have after the first scene, which is great imo, is it is scattershot until Jyn gets to Jedha. One way to have easily fixed it is by putting each character's scenes together. Don't cut to adult Jyn for 30 seconds then cut away, and then cut back.

-Opening Scene
- Cassian Scene
- All the [BLACKOUT]Bodhi/Saw[/BLACKOUT] Scenes
- All the Jyn Scenes [BLACKOUT](Her waking up, her being rescued, her meeting on Yavin and arriving on Jedha)[/BLACKOUT]

Cutting them up was unnecessary and played with the flow of the opening. It is also exactly why they needed to to tell you where they were repeatedly.

True true, and I do need to read that. I think I was thinking mainly in the context of helping set up the whole fact that 'Cassian is trying to track down rumors of a defected imperial pilot with information from the head scientist on on a secret imperial weapons project'. Basically a lot of the up front exposition up to the point that they go to Jeddah... they could have explained in a crawl for the most part, and we could have been given a little more backstory on the temple and Saw and his clan. Felt like his character was wasted a little bit.

I might feel different after the next viewing... who knows. I've been known to miss things on first viewing when it comes to dialogue because I'm so focused on the visuals, but I felt like we didn't get a clear enough setup of what the state of the Alliance is at - and that could have been addressed in the crawl as well. Maybe I was just looking for that because it feels like the Rebels show has been building building building, and I wanted a better lay of the land 2 years down the line.

Overall though... loved it. I think my first reason for loving SW at the age of 3 in 77 was the visual.. the hardware, the ships, the guns... it wasn't the jedi mysticism angle or anything like that. And that reigned true even for Empire, which I think I liked for the Battle of Hoth and sweet looking snowspeeders and AT-ATs more than anything. And this movie goes straight to that initial hook for me.

You have to read the book. Great set-up of Galen/Krennic, as well as a detailed description of how (and where) the Death Star construction goes from its very beginning. Also a few details regarding kyber crystals and the Force. The Krennic/Tarkin measuring contest is also started in the book.

Really enjoyed that read!

Darth is always wrong. How do you people deal with a guy like that? :oldrazz:

Oh, one other thing.....the trailers. I saw a Stinkformers trailer....almost made me want to throw up. They said something like "Do you want to know why they keep coming back?" If I had been drinking something, it probably would have come out of my nose. My first reaction was "Uhhh....no I don't want to know", but my second reaction was "What can I do to keep them from coming back?".

Liked the SM trailer and loved the GotG trailer (which I had previously only seen on my computer), but the BIG one for me was Kong:Skull Island. OMG, even though Mike just hates Brie Larson :o , I think she's awesome. That one is a first day must see for me. She is gonna kill it in CM. If there's an "it" on screen, she's got it.

EDIT: Oh yeah....and it rained more down here in LA than they said it would and I STILL went and saw R1.....seriously though, for those of you who really are dealing with weather issues, be safe because I want (most of) you back on here posting. :cwink:

Was unclear on a couple of things...
1) The original plan was to go to Scariff, extract the physical copy of the plans and get back on the stolen imperial ship and leave. But when the rebels show up and the shield gate is closed, they realize that they can't leave so they need to transmit the data. But in order to do so they need to take down the shield gate, meaning why change the plan if they needed to take down the shield gate regardless?

2) When Jyn is trying to transmit the plans, she need to adjust the antenna but Krennic shows up and destroys the antenna before the plans are sent. When the shield gate is taken down, she is then able to transmit the plans despite the antenna having been destroyed?

The antenna wasn't destroyed. Just the console that adjusts the antenna.

Aren't R2 and C3PO seen after Raddus has already gone? It just seems weird that this aspect of the plan (the Tantive IV and a trip to Tatooine with the plans of all places) is left to us to assume. I mean, why then dash off to Tatooine? Just transmit the plans back to Yavin IV

Man, I loved this film! The characters, the designs, the grungy nature of everything, the atmosphere, the heart, the action, the cgi characters (which were jaw dropping and fantastic), and the score (especially the Imperial Suite). As a star wars fan it was pure joy. Thank you, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Gareth and crew!

It's a great time to be a star wars fan!

On a side note,[BLACKOUT]Vader's pun was glorious! [/BLACKOUT]:D

It was awesome loved it. Even knowing the spoilers and having watched some leaks, I still geeked out and had the biggest smile on my face during certain parts.

Not many negatives for me with this film. If I had to name a few I would say Saw, I dunno if it was the performance or what. But he was just kinda there to me and I felt myself not really digging the times he was on screen.

Oh and the title card was pretty bland and just, there.

Some of the first half of the film does move slowly, some of it I really enjoyed though. Other parts sorta dragged maybe a little too much for my taste. But not a huge complaint because like I said it had other parts during the first half I really enjoyed to break it up a bit.

The score wasn't amazing like past scores but wasn't horrible either. It's not Williams obviously but it worked well enough. There were certain moments of the old themes I enjoyed. And enjoyed most of it overall a lot actually. By far my favorite piece of the new score though was during Vader's final scene.

But positives far outweigh the negatives. Really enjoyed this group of characters even though we do not get too much background on some of them. But I really am glad they all had their moments and I found myself really enjoying some of their relationships. Cassian/Jyn/K2, Galen and Jyn, Galen and Krennic, Vader and Krennic, Krennic and [BLACKOUT]Tarkin[/BLACKOUT]. Really loved all those interactions.

I thought the cinematography and visuals were beautiful. And personally the FX used for [BLACKOUT]Tarkin and Leia looked damn great, especially Tarkin[/BLACKOUT]. Worked so well for me and was very pleased with how it was used/done.

The latter part of the 2nd half of the film and the third act are really where this film shines. Incredible stuff, a perfect set up into ANH. A great space battle and loved the ground assault. And obviously Vader's scenes were wonderful. I thought Vader's voice was better than Rebels and closer to what we know from the films, worked for me. He was represented perfectly in his brief scenes and it very much so makes up for the infamous NOOOOOOO in ROTS.

Can't wait to see this again and it's a great addition to the franchise, very excited to watch this and ANH back to back. I have the urge to watch it right now because I really feel like it will enhance my viewings of it from now on. Hard to rank it right now after only one viewing. But for now I would say

Empire
Force Awakens
New Hope/Rogue One (almost as one big film in two parts)
Jedi
Sith
Menace
Clones

I'd rank the films:

Star Wars/ESB
Rogue One
TFA
ROTS
ROTJ
AOTC
TPM

OK but what if someone never saw any SW movies before? And goes to see that one? I think it's insanely harsh to call someone "an idiot" here.

Then they had to at least seen any of the Dracula, Frankenstein, and Mummy movies he was in.:o

"I still think she's Rey's mom," dude at my office who hasn't seen it yet is still insisting.

At least he doesn't think the Rogue One crew are the Knights of Ren.

When the Blu-ray comes out, someone needs to edit this over them:

Was the Tantive IV with the fleet from the beginning of the mission? Wouldn't that be risky to have the 'escort ship' there from the get-go?

Leia was on there, so obviously it probably dropped by the Alderon first.
