Hux's father fled into the Unknown Regions after the Empire signed the Galactic Concordance. (The Galactic Empire surrendered to the New Republic).

So right there is proof that JJ and Jasdan are paying attention to whats being done in the books or vice verse, because the Unknown Refions were set up in Star Wars Aftermath.

George Lucas: Star Wars Is a ‘Soap Opera’ About ‘Family Problems,’ Not ‘Spaceships’

In an interview with CBS in November, the filmmaker said he submitted ideas for new films but that “ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’”

“People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems — it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘fine. … I’ll go my way and I let them go their way,’” Lucas continued.

They apparently did keep the "family problems" theme though.
