Hi all! I finally had an opportunity to see Generation X today. It's not a great film. It barely qualifies as a good film. What it is is an interesting attempt to do a live action X-film on a miniscule tv size budget. If I'm not mistaken, I believe GX is the first feature film that Avi Arad produced (or executive produced in this case) after he started working at Marvel, so in a sense, it's important as being really the starting point for all the numerous films Marvel has done in the past ten years since it aired. The film's director, Jack Sholder, works at my university, so I emailed him and asked him some interview type questions about GX for possible inclusion in a book I plan to write about the history of comic book movies. Has anyone else here seen GX? What did you think of it?

meh. Banshee wasn't bad but Finola Hughes was a bit too old for Emma Frost and why they chose to make Jubilee caucasian I'll never know. what really ruined it though was the over-the-top villain.

That's actually one of the questions I asked Mr. Sholder was if there was any particular reason for changing her ethnicity. If he emails me back, I'll post his response.

What I like to know why no Chamber? He would've been easy to do for costume and effects and save the cool effects for his power for the ending for surprise factor. But they decided to a cyclops wannabe character instead.

They should have used the Kea Wong from X3. She was a believable Junilee.

I think she may have been too young. Generation X came out in '96.

Okay, I got an email back from Mr. Sholder. He said that the reason they made Jubilee caucasian is that it was thought at the time that if they kept her Chinese it would have been harder to cast the role. He also said his first choice for that role was Rose McGowan, but she couldn't do it.

the only time i saw this was when it first aired...i've been meaning to track down a copy so i can see it again...i remember being kinda disappointed but still enjoying it for what it was.

they didn't use chamber becuase they couldn't do the speical effects for the character so they made up a new one instead.

They should do a Tv series now. With the level of special effects on shows like smallville it should be easy.

Yeah, but she was really fit.

Could you post afterwards the whole Q&A here? I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks.

Any series they do now would (should) probably be based on New X-Men, since Generation X isn't even a comic anymore. I'd even consider a show based on the movie continuity with the Xavier students who have been featured, while adding a few from the current comics.

Clearly, as much as I loved Generation X and haven't loved an young team the same way since, and even though they were killed off cheaply before their time... they are in the 90s and unfortunately, they may need to stay that way.

The Generation X movie interestingly has the same plot as the first X-Men flick.

I saw this when I was in 3rd grade (I think). From what I remember it was pretty bad.

And when you guys mention a GX tv show it just makes me think of that crappy Mutant X show.

wha...? no it doesn't.

Sure it does.

- Explanation of mutation at the beginning of the movie.
- The film follows two new mutants, a male and a female, being introduced to the team, one is a teenage girl scared of her powers, the other a rebel
- The climax sees the heroes rescue one of their members from the villain, who is using them to power a machine

an explanation of mutation at the beginning was necessary for the average viewer, and I'd hardly consider Skin a rebel. re: the machine, I remember the villain experimenting on mutants because within the continuity of the film anyone with an x-gene had some level of telepathy, but I don't remember it being powered by mutants.

It would've been too hard to find an asian chick actress in the late 90's? Though some artists tended to draw her more caucasian for some reason.

Whoa. Cool!

Fox still sucks! And apparently they hand finished scripts to their directors on a regular basis!

Um, do you mean UNfinished scripts? If so, I think you're right. That's why Alien 3 sucked. They didn't really have a script!

I know there's no official releases but does anyone actually own this film in any form just to be an x-completists...

it wasn't the best but i remember it being ok at best
