It wasn't just because of the Cartoons guys. X-Men were HUGE in comics when Byrne was drawing them. It can't really be explained Why X-Men became so popular, it just happened.
GR, Man-Thing, Werewolf byNight, Dracula , Zombie and the living Mummy , were all part of the very end of a Monster craze that had been going on for YEARS. Werewolf By Night #5 was my Actual 1st Comic I bought on my own. I was heavy into the movie monsters, had all the Aurora Models, monster mags and what not.
My neighbor had all the superhero comics, me the monsters.
