GI Joe movie thoughts

Heretic said:
GI Joe is my favorite thing...I dont mean my favorite toy or comic book...its my favorite ANYTHING on earth. I agre that the story deserves better than the silly idea that was circulating with some new recruit that I've never heard of being the star...

I also think that GI Joe is in the great position of being one of the longest running icons in pop culture...and theres NEVER been a movie about them...it could be massivly huge.

That said, I dont like the choices picked for a lot of the characters listed. I'm not exactly a movie buff so I'm not sure who Id pick, but Mel Gibson as major Blood? Oh, and keep Serpentor away from my Gi joe movie!!!!
this YOU command eh heretic?

and in the movie, every time a joe shoots down a cobra vehicle, we'll ALWAYS see the guy jump out and deploy his chute. ALWAYS.

yup, and no matter how many guns are fired, no one will ever get shot. Every time a cobra agent gets caught he will be tied to a tree with heart boxers.
but its still a good time!

it was sort of like a sunshine watered down version of the comic.
I see it this way.
If you like the comic the show sucked.
if you grew up with the show the comic was a more violent better written version.

I take my Joe seriously...I'm probably slightly attracted to Snake-Eyes...the cartoon with its Shipwreck and Bazooka nonsense was just idiotic.

Thats a pretty fair statement.

I grew up watching the cartoon, and loved it. One of my cousins had a friend who subscribed to Marvel's G.I. Joe and I was pleasantly surprised how well, and realisitcally storylines were played out. People died, new soliders were introduced, and Cobra even had it's own Civil War between Cobra Commander (who I believe was really a guy named Fred VII if I am not mistaken who was masquerading as the real deal), and Serpentor. Personally, I loved both the cartoon and the comic. I just viewed the comic book version as the more important medium of the two, as the comic could and would so many times tell stories that really couldnt be presented in a 1980's childrens cartoon show.

I haven't seen/read any GI Joe for a very long time but just last night when i was looking for some TF TPB's at Amazon i came across a crossover one with GI Joe and decided to take a look at what they had on GI Joe
I ended up ordering the latest 2 trades and the Snake Eyes: Declassified TPB

thankfully, none of you are casting directors.

This alone is only beaten out as the most uninsightful, blowhardy phrase commonly used on SHH by the phrase followed by a lack of any alternative ideas whatsoever which you've exemplified.

wh'd play quick kick?

Tony Jaa or Jason Scott Lee.

Some random casting suggestions:

Gen. Hawk - Alec Baldwin
Stalker - Brian J. White
Scarlett - Jessica Biel
Heavy Duty - Henry Simmons

Destro - Arnold Vosloo
Dr. Mindbender - John Malkovich
Baroness - Jill Hennessey
Zartan - Sean Bean
Storm Shadow - Donnie Yen

I agree completely with Rhames as Roadblock, Park as Snake Eyes, Lilly as Lady Jaye.

Browder would make a better Flint than Duke, IMHO.

Don't think I've seen Kenny Johnson in anything, but he definitely looks like Duke should.

None of this really matters. Haven't you guys read Di Bonaventura's (spelling?) take on a Joe movie?

COBRA will not be a terrorist organization, "Cobra" will actually be one person.

They will singlehandedly ruin what could be a huge franchise but the idiots behind it think the original concepts are too "cartoony." Yeah, a worldwide terrorist organization is cartoony. I guess they never heard of a little group run by some dude named Osama Bin Laden.

My thoughts exactly. Which is why I am trying to get a script(s) down.

My current script opens in 1986 Cambodia amidst the Cambodian-Vietnamese conflict. The story begins with a small U.S. platoon of enlisted men. The platoon is lead by Conrad 'Duke' Hauser. The other significant members in the platoon are John 'Rexx' Connelly(aka Cobra Commander) and a young GI known simply as Snake(Guess who.)

Conrad and Rexx are like brothers and Snake, well, Snake is Snake. It is in this jungle where we see the true origins of Cobra Commander and Cobra and a lot of questions are answered and the stages are set.

What compelled Rexx to turn against his country and his brother in arms, Duke? What caused Snake to become a silent masked man?

The story would be given a much deeper and meaningful complexity with this opening. It would make the story not just a surface level one but a personal one. A personal struggle and story between Conrad and Rexx with Snake as the witness.

I know I'll piss off a lot of people with this but here is my version:

Amidst the jungle one night Rexx(CC) has a supernatural, surreal experience. He comes face to face with the personification of evil in the GI Joe universe - Globuluss. It is here that Globuluss lures and turns Rexx to the evil side to due his bidding. Cobra is born, Cobra Commander lives.

Following the encounter Cobra Commander kills his entire platoon with Duke and Snake being the exceptions.

Snake was asleep on watch(he wasn't always bad ass) and heard nothing. His silence and mask are attributed to this. He hides his face in shame and makes it a point to always listen with heightened awareness after this, eh, mishap.

Cobra Commander kept Duke alive for a reason. Commander has Duke on his hands and knees before him, defeated, when he says in the most sinister voice ever heard on film:

'I am allowing you to live becaussssss it issssss necessssssary. Necesssssary for me to know my biggest adverssssary in the upcoming battle will be alive only becausssse I let him. Necesssssary for me to know the one who will lead the pathetic raccccce of mankind agianst me and the mighty Cobra. I need you to lead my largest threats to there deathssss.'

Cobra Commander smiles a wicked smile as Duke winces.

Snake awakes and makes his way back to the camp unbeknownst.

'You are going to be the one who ultimately handssss the world to me, Cobra Commander and my minions of the all mighty Globulusssss. You will be the biggest hero in American military hisstory, but in reality you will be the biggessst traitor, responsible for the deathssss of millionsss. Even worssse, you'll know it but be unable to ssstop it.'

Cobra Commander pistol whips Duke and walks off in to the jungle night. Duke, on hands and knees, lowers his head and weeps.

Snake from the dark brush, watching.

Cobra Commander's origin shouldn't be revealed in the first film, if at all in the franchise. Leave it a mystery. He's more dangerous and intriguing that way.

And yes, I remember the script review Latino Review did of a draft of GI Joe. It sounded horrid. Destro ran the organization, Cobra Commander was simply named "Cobra" and was Duke's BFF and a former Joe who had been kidnapped and genetically altered, Snake Eyes wasn't mute, he simply took a vow of silence and he and Scarlett were in couples counseling. It sounded putrid. I pray that script and however wrote it spontaneously combusts.

Never watched The Shield. But I take it he's a pretty good actor, then?

Another casting suggestion:

Peter Reckell for Shipwreck

PeterReckellL06.jpg

He's a soap actor, but a good one, and a dead ringer for the character.

he IS now that you mention it

i wonder remember the gijoe action team how would a movie about THEM go?thay could be depicted as having retired or honorably dischargedfrom the military but still doing good things

That idea sounds fine for a new animated movie but live action? It just screams "too cartoony." I'm pretty sure any live action film will likely be as realistic as a GI Joe movie could possibly be.

A live action Joe film has been a dream of mine for quite some time and I too have ideas of how it should be handled (it has "trilogy" written all over it.) I would stay far away from the cartoony, fanboy-ish take most seem to have and take a more practical Bryan Singer approach ala "X-Men." I like some of the casting ideas in this thread (some of them, most are just too outlandish and not remotely realistic either storywise or financially.)

I still wish Superherohype would include a dedicated GI Joe forum on here, it certainly deserves one.
