The Dark Knight Gilliam Attacks Warner Brothers Promotion!!

what an ass, he clearly needs to look into this subject more

Anyone bashing Gilliam needs to take a step back and realize that, regardless of where the Oscar buzz started, it is most definitely a marketing tool.

To be perfectly honest, I firmly believe that if Ledger were still alive, we would not be seeing or hearing the word Oscar everytime his performance is discussed. Would it have been discussed? Probably. But nowhere near the oversaturated level that it has been.

You know, I don't think focusing on Heath Ledger is just because he died so prematurely. Even if Heath were still alive today the marketing and promotion of the film would still be revolving around his performance as the Joker because it's just that good.

If Heath was still alive the marketing would probably in over drive, imagine Joker hijacking MTV or some teen award show. Joker type commercials hell there have been tons of GCN, Joker appearing on talk shows, a hell load more of TV spots airing. The only difference is there wouldn't be that extra spice of holy **** we gotta get us some Joker stuff while we can just look at e-bay 200 bucks for some 10 dollar toy.

Saying a movie has Oscar talks is used by every single movie (that has it) so I don't mind that WB is using that, but there not going hey this is Heath's last movie!!! go watch it. Which imo sounds like this guy wanted to do with his movie and now he lost the thunder.

Whether Heath died or not, I think the marketing would've been carried out pretty much the same way.

It just sounds like Gilliam's jealous because there's been very little talk at all about his own movie, even though Heath was also in it.

His performance is remarkable. That much is true. But I seriously doubt this film was made with the intention of being all about Ledger's performance. That's what it's become though. And to say that his death has little or nothing to do with that is naivety at it's finest. And anyone that doesn't find the constant talk of Oscars more than a little ridiculous, isn't paying enough attention. As of late, you can't hear or read anything about his performance (or even the film itself for that matter) without the word Oscar being mentioned. Hell, even Oldman went on record saying he not only thinks Ledger will get the nomination, but that he'll win. That's a pretty bold statement. And in all honesty, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Academy snubs him solely for the fact that a nomination is practically demanded at this point. It's happened before. I don't know if it'll happen this time. But if it did, I wouldn't be surprised.

As to where the rumors started: I recall reading several times that the buzz started very shortly after his death. Long before any critics would've be able to screen the film. And in all honesty, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the rumors were started by the studio solely to build hype for the film. Make no mistake. We're talking about WB studio executives and producers. Sure, they'll sing an actor or film's praise until they lose their voice. They'll make you believe what they're telling you. But at the end of the day, the only thing those people care about is making more money. And if generating buzz of Oscar gold will guarantee that, you'd be foolish to think they wouldn't.

Funny I seem to recall the buzz starting before his death. Probably gathered apace after his death but I'm pretty certain the word was sensational before his death. I could be wrong though.

I have to disagree. Heath would have received Oscar talk even if he was alive today and the Oscar buzz certainly isn't for pity sake either.

I personally NEVER get tired of hearing Oscar buzz for Heath. I just think he deserves all the praise and recognition because his performance looks extraordinary.

It was, the word of Heaths performance got around during filming and just generated from there.

Gilliam puts his foot in his mouth all the time
Just ignore him
