0_0 I wonder what ao Scott will say
Ok folks. Here is a ultimate spoiler. Watch if you want.
Here is Godzilla in all his glory using his Atomic Breath against the MUTO. This will most likely be taken down real soon.
I suggest those who quoted him also take the link out of the quote
I haven't seen the film yet, but I can't help but feel people expected something different.
Who cares if the script didn't have anything for the characters to "do" during the third act? That's kind of the point of Godzilla, thematically: Mankind experiencing these things and being able to do f-k-all about it but watch it happen and get the ever loving hell out of the way. I can't comment on Taylor-Johnson's acting yet so I won't.
On to Edwards teasing the audience too much before letting stuff fly...eh, again what were you expecting? It was stated way in advance that he was going to a less-is-more approach and I for one fully expected the narrative to tease for most of the runtime until the third act. I understand getting a little miffed and hell, maybe while I'm watching it I'll say "well dammit! That isn't fair!!!" But having the knowledge that Edwards was going to hold back until the last possible moment makes me expect nothing less.
Did you people honestly expect a 2hr monster mash and not something more akin the original Gojira? Which I might add, really only has one true scene of Godzilla destruction in it. You only glimpse Godzilla in that film briefly here and there before his rampage in Tokyo and a quick power line scene. I think his screentime is only 15 minutes or so and yet it's still considered the best film of this long running series.
I get wanting to see the monster all time in all it's glory, but there is no denying that the less is more approach is usually the most well done. Jaws being the perfect example. The first two Alien films also fit the mold. Aliens is a long film, even longer with the fan favorite Directors Cut and you only really ever see the Aliens in quick bursts. The shot barely ever really lingers on the creatures for any significant amount of time until the Queen shows up at the end. Yet Aliens is considered a classic sci-fi/action/horror film. I'd say in a 2.5 hour film the Aliens maybe have 15-18 minutes of screentime maybe. MAYBE 20 if I'm being generous-Queen and all.
Jurassic Park, isn't there less than 20 minutes of dinosaurs in that whole film?
I know it's all about execution, but I can't help but think some people were expecting something they shouldn't have with this one even when everything was spelled out for them from the get-go.
I was saying all of these things before I saw the film. I watched the original 1954 version last night right before seeing this. I can say that Godzilla's precence isn't even half as strong in Edward's film as the original. This film is much more "Army vs Muto" than it is Godzilla. I think the less is more approach is admirable in this day and age, but you can take it to far and this team did just that. It's a good movie. It doesn't really feel like a Godzilla movie though. He feels like a guest star in the MUTO's movie. GODZILLA(1954) is clearly his movie just as JAWS, despite small screen time, is the shark's movie. You don't ever really feel this is Godzilla's movie and when it finally starts to, the film ends. Maybe that's the biggest problem. If you tease, tease and tease, but your pay off is great then it feels worth it. This film doesn't have a very strong pay off.
I'd give the film an 8 or 8.5 out of 10. It's a good film. Is it a good Godzilla film? I don't know about that. It's underwhelming though, filled with teases that only lead you to third base and never home.
Posting Bootleg footage may get you banned.
Good points. We shall see shortly!![]()
These reviews are getting me so pumped for this movie!
Along with the original 1954 film (obviously), I've been watching the Heisei Godzilla films in preparation for this weekend. The Heisei Era is my personal favorite era for Godzilla, so ... Yeah. Good stuff.![]()
No way in hell I am spoiling the atomic breath before I see this in theaters.
No ****ing chance.
Count me in the Heisei lovers camp.
I can watch ANY of those entries any time. Even Godzilla vs. Spacegodzillat:
