Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Surely WB/Legendary couldn't get license for the other Toho monsters, right?? I still think other kaiju/titans are original monsters and I'm hyped af to see them.

All we know is that Legendary was able to get 5. It could have changed, but I don't think I've seen anything that indicates it. They are most likely original creations.

Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and who?

KG looks absolutely phenomenal. I personally love the fiery Rodan.
Godzilla is the one and only. Mothra looks sweet yet a giant menacing beast.

And there's 3/4 more beasts in the trailer that look cool. What a great trailer.

The imagery is breathtaking. The one shot where KG opens up is insane.
The shot with the fiery "ball" coming from the skies is poetry...

Beautiful stuff.

Awesome effects and looks like it could be epic!

Personally worried from the trailer though showcasing action over story - hopefully the film doesn't as well.

Part of what I loved about the first film was just how "grounded" it was, it was a horror film and character piece which elevated the action.

Some people hated that the first film had character over action - but, for me, the discovery was part of what made it work so well. Hell, even just look at Jurassic Park - the dinosaurs were in it less than people remember since the characters made those moments truly pop - same with Jaws; that's what the first new Godzilla movie did as well (if I remember correctly, so did the first ever Godzilla film).

I hope so too. Gareth Edwards in the first movie, however thin his characters might have been, did a great job showing a Godzilla movie from the POV of the people scurrying around underfoot and giving the kaijus a real sense of scale and weight. Hopefully this doesn't completely sacrifice that for more emphasis on spectacle.

More generic than the first trailer but some cool footage.

Yea it lacks the kind of operatic grandeur of the first trailer and goes more just spectacle.

It's crazy how they can switch up tones with a trailer (see Suicide Squad). The first one felt more carefully constructed while this is an action montage, which is fine.

Everything is just too dark, literally. I know it's to make the FX look better but it gets old. I just hope the human characters are more interesting this time around.
