Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Just got back and I really enjoyed it. I don't know what the critics were expecting. As a Godzilla movie, this delivered in pretty much every way. Bold opinion incoming, but I actually thought it was better than the first film. Not just because of the obvious added kaiju action, but the characters in this seemed much livelier. Bradley Whitford's character got a little too corny at times and Sally Hawkins was completely wasted yet again but those were my only real complaints in regards to the characters.

I highly recommend seeing this in IMAX if you can.

My complaint is that there is basically no reason for the daughter character to be in any given scene. Everything regarding her character felt like a draft away, as if they couldn't figure out how to give her much of a reason to be in the movie. If she had somehow been integral to the communication device or something that'd be one thing but instead she's just...around.

I mean.... what more do you want from it? They weren't gonna Nolan it up this time, which was what the first kinda was. The biggest complaint was lack of action from people online and they wanted to remedy that.

But they really didn't.

Also there’s just sometimes I can gauge fairly well for myself what I’ll at least enjoy somewhat or outright don’t wanna see think I won’t care for and won’t waste my time.

Like Terminator Genysis I never even bothered seeing it. I love the first 2 films classics. I saw Terminator 3 and Salvation in theaters. Definitely disappointments. Not what I wanted continuing on from T2. But I also don’t hate them. I can throw on T3 and enjoy some stuff about it. I can throw on Salvation and enjoy that one a bit more honestly. Genysis I was like yeah no I’m good. And now Dark Fate after the first trailer I am not feeling at all.

Sorry to sidetrack here.

You're good. Haha, I'm just giving you a hard time..I loved Bran being King tbh. I wasn't a fan of the show, could only watch the first 3 seasons, but I watched season 8 with my girlfriend. I totally called Bran being King. Well... Sort of. Once he killed the night King (he gave Arya the dagger the previous season and thought up the situation to kill him) I said that he's responsible for everything happening in season 8, indirectly.

Good to hear from you. I'm not on the hype that much anymore. I grew tired of the MCU, got stale for me. I thought End Game was pretty bad and wasnt thrilled to be getting home at 2:30am after seeing it lol I grew up with Godzilla though. So I'm stoked for this!

Yeah I had a really good time with this movie. It has its issues, but overall I ended up enjoying it for the most part, especially when it came to the monster action. Rodan and KG stole the show IMO and had some pretty badass moments. I do wish Mothra got more screen time and more to do in the fights, but you can definitely tell Doughtery is a Godzilla fan, especially the stuff from the Toho era which I recognized immediately. So many cool little easter eggs and references to the past movies and I loved how certain themes were used. The human stuff isn't great, but it didn't ruin or bog the movie down IMO. It was just there and honestly I got such a fun 90's disaster movie vibe from alot of it which I know some people won't consider a good thing, but if grew up enjoying stuff like the original Independence Day than it shouldn't bother you.

I also did actually like some of the characters too like Kyle Chandler, Bradely Whitford and Thomas Middleditch. Ken Watanabe was much better here than in the 2014 Godzilla as well, although Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins and Vera Farmiga to a degree did feel kind of wasted. Millie Bobbie Brown was just ok too, but I didn't get all that invested in her character anyways. Still can't wait for KVG next year either.

7/10

Is Charles dance confirmed for KvG?

Btw the ending for this movie was ruined for me at the beginning of last year when their test screening descriptions got out lol

Yes !! I agree wholeheartedly!! I saw it in Imax as well!! The movie was great start to finish!! It had so many Easter eggs and callbacks, that I don’t think I caught them all, but wow just wow.. I can’t speak for anyone else and their opinion on this film, but imo it’s one of the best giant monster flicks of all time!! It was great!! My son and I really enjoyed it!!

That was a touching scene between Serizawa and Godzilla.. I loved the classic Godzilla theme as well!! The ending credits as they rolled were more of a build up than the post credit scene .I was really excited when I saw that last drawing on the credits!!

Just got back from this. I loved this. Disclaimer, I was always likely to like this, though.

The mvp is Bear McCreary. The soundtrack elevates a LOT of this movie. Especially when it hits key themes. I mean, going into the final battle with the Godzilla march, flashback to the Heisei movies. And I am going to be freaking annoyed if this soundtrack is ignored during the awards shows.

I can see where the criticism of the vfx comes from, about not being able to see things. But the comparisons to the Battle for Winterfell are completely wrong. The action is obscured by other means, or in different ways. Between the goddamn shaky cam and the rain/snow creating a fuzzy screen effect that felt like it separated the monsters the real actors. Still enjoyed what I saw, but there is definite room for improvement.

Time for spoiler talk.
This was clearly a movie made by a Godzilla fan. A lot of fun stuff sprinkled into it. I was kind of surprised at how much Kong was referenced, even a rear shot of him once. That was cool. And I do love the world building that they did. It felt like this was the big keystone for building the Monsterverse, should it go on after Godzilla vs Kong. It definitely set up for the world to go full on scifi. Even if some of it seemed like it cribbed it from Pacific Rim. I do look forward to getting it on blu-ray to see all the newspaper articles in the credits better. But it does some fun little retcons to look back at Skull Island.

The human characters and story were definitely more entertaining than '14. I do think the sudden shift from what was established in '14 will put off some people. I can kind of see where the critics felt it got a bit convoluted, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Definitely more than '14.

I think the thing that bothered me the most was the random inclusion of the Oxygen Destroyer. I understand the need for a super weapon for the plot, but the casualness of its inclusion I feel is a great disservice. The Oxygen Destroyer, more than even Godzilla, is the parallel to the atomic bomb. Even in other g-movies outside of Gojira, it is treated with respect, and never actually used again. In this, it is an ineffective weapon, with no real fallout for its usage. It bugs me big time that is just a random name grab for a random super weapon, ignoring the metaphor.

I do love that Zhan Ziyi was playing the twins. And a third generation of twins to study Infant Island. I just wish Mothra was in it more. Her small parts were great, and I loved her.

I didn't keep up with spoilers, so Rodan's heel turn was a pleasant surprise to me. Just wish we got a bit more of him, along with Mothra.

And I love the portrayal of Ghidorah. Definitely potential for setting up some weird things in the future. Even if they crib from Pacific Rim a bit to do it. And I loved Lefty. Lefty was definitely the Moe of the three heads.

I loved the Argo, as well. Definitely a great step for some fun new weaponry. And I loved the sea base of Monarch. As I have said, this film really is a keystone for allowing the series to go in fun ways. Masers, Super X's, Gotengos, and even mechs don't seem that too far off now.

I will say, I was happy briefly when it looked like Vera Farminga was going to survive. But then Godzilla did his pulse, and I'm like, oh...

Definitely going to see it a few more times. Pick up the soundtrack. Pre-order my SH Monsterarts for Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan. Hope for some models of the mammoth titan.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who actually really liked that moment as well. That was honestly the most emotionally effective scene in the movie IMO and it took me by complete surprise. It was well done and man when that classic Godzilla theme hit it was pretty awesome.

Good to hear from you man. I know you’re busting balls. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy Endgame. I think the 4 films the Russo’s did are awesome each in their own way. I was not big on Black Panther. Or some of the other recent solo films. Some enjoyable but nothing special.

Not really big some of them like Homecoming as well. Not overly excited for Far From Home either. Funny thing is I enjoyed Black Panther and Spidey so much more in the team up films like CW/IW/EG over their actual solo films.

But yeah I was gonna take a little break from here for a while too due to some personal stuff but I kinda need this to keep my mind occupied. It’s helped in a small way which is at least something.

So.....I desperately wanted to love this. I grew up with Godzilla movies, I have various figures including multiple Godzillas, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, and I was hyping for months over the trailers.

On the one hand, it is a pretty old-school Godzilla movie (with all, good and bad, that that implies). Monster mash in between a ridiculous convoluted "plot" and goofy and/or one-dimensional humans scurrying around.

Maybe I overhyped myself into expecting something more epic, or maybe it's the operatic trailers, but I was a bit underwhelmed. The vibe of global apocalyptic devastation we get from the trailers goes by too fleetingly and mostly offscreen and have an impact. That shot of a devastated Washington DC, for example, is a great visual shot in and of itself, but it goes by in two seconds and it's all we see of it. The rest of the movie is just following around the little gaggle of humans globe-trotting all over the place.

Honestly I preferred the tone and the direction of Gareth Edwards in 2014. Daughtery sacrificed that ground level realism and verisimilitude for more CGI spectacle, and I missed it not feeling as "real" and almost docudrama as 2014 did.

The only kinda "actor" moments are Vera Farmiga's video monologue, and
Serizawa's sacrifice
, although the latter lacked the effect it was meant to have because the character was so thinly-developed. Charles Dance got nothing to do, and I kind of LOL'ed at
how laughably throwaway Sally Hawkins was killed off. Also did Vera Farmiga die or not? I wasn't even clear on that.

It also kinda felt like shoehorning Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan into one movie was a little too much. Mothra was pretty underused. Rodan had a cool introduction, but after that he didn't get much to do besides kinda be Ghidorah's right-hand man.

Also I was super stoked to see Ghidorah, and even he felt kinda underwhelming. Maybe because again, the trailers give this vibe of global apocalypse and then the movie underwhelms with it. Or maybe I was just overhyping myself.

Godzilla's first appearance making his "threat display" outside the underwater base, him looking down at Kyle Chandler on the sub, and the scene between he and Serizawa were all pretty awesome moments.

Having remembered you liking and commenting on a few pasts posts of mine defending the Edward's film I'm not surprised we're on the exact same page with this new one.

I really enjoyed this sequel but Gareth did a much better job with directing and showing us the size, scale and sheer terror of giant monsters wreaking havok amongst us. I really liked how his film took a more serious approach. When you think back to his film there was really no typical summer blockbuster humor, like at all. Dougherty's movie was indeed awesome but they went overboard with some lame attempts at humor.

Edwards also had much better standout shots and scenes that truly stood out.

I want to see this one again and with some friends this time but I already had a feeling first time around that I would come out liking the first one more, and I did. Say what you want about the cutting away from the action in the first two acts but overall Edward's film had me smiling a lot more, coming from a Godzilla fan since childhood.

King of the Monsters was really awesome but the stronger film to me is the previous one. I will say that Dougherty did a good job of mixing the Heisei and the Showa together but that might have been the problem. It didn't mix well enough. Almost but not quite.

Just got back.

I know exactly what genre I'm talking about, but man I was not prepared for just how deeply stupid this film is.

Short of being boring voids like the character of the first film, there's just a weird boneheaded vibe to all the characters across the board.

15 minute TEDTalks with accompanying pre-cut video presentations? Sure I guess.

Some fun monster sequences. Would have liked to have seen more of many of the designs.

6/10
Preach.

Edwards has a talent with visuals. I miss him. I hope he returns to directing someday. I feel bad that he burnt out.

Some quick thoughts before I go to bed:

I definitely don't like this movie in the slightest. I found it to be pretty awful. I didn't really have any expectations for the type of movie it was going to be, but slow and boring was not something I would've ever imagined. So many scenes of people standing around, looking at videos, and giving long bits of exposition. Felt like such a waste of time. I wouldn't have minded if the characters were at least somewhat interesting, but they're just cliche cardboard cutouts. Half of them don't even serve a purpose. All the actors were fine, though I think some of Dougherty's direction made for some really awkward performances at times.

As for the monster stuff, I see where all the complaints about seeing things come from. So much of it is obscured either from dark environments or crap camera work. I usually don't complain about action scenes being hard to follow, but holy hell, was this movie testing me. I got like a general idea of what was going on, but it was a struggle at times. The final confrontation was slightly better with this, but it didn't ever last long. So much cutting away from the action to meander with the people. It was very frustrating. Didn't help that a lot of the CG wasn't that great. Ghidorah looked unfinished for the majority of the movie.

I'm gonna sleep on it, but as a first impression, my rating as of now sits around 3/10.

Just got back.

The ending worked, it was triumphant and left me a tad excited for what's to come. However, ended up leaving severely disappointed. The story and the human characters were serviceable enough but it's a film ruined by editing and extreme closeups in every single shot. No room to breathe whatsoever which affected any sense of atmosphere and grandeur such powerful titans should exude. I really wanted to love this but I kept thinking back on the way Edwards handled the scenes in the first movie.

Whenever Godzilla et. al were engaging in awesomeness, the shot had to be riddled with 20 edits going back to the human characters reactions and one-liners. I wished the standout images from the trailer lasted longer and had more impact, they were there only for three seconds at most. Makes a great GIF, but nothing else.

5.5/10

Dougherty seems to be going for a "Spielberg look" while understanding half of it. It's great to set up the emotion of a scene by showing the human characters reacting to something before the audience sees it. ONce you do it though, you don't have to cut back to the humans literally every 3 seconds. They really don't wan't to let anything just play out in this do they?
