Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

On the subject of the direction between the 2014 movie and KotM, I would agree 2014 is better directed. This movie had much more generic direction and such, but that said I liked this movie more in the end. It all comes down to how successful are you at being what you want to be. I feel the 2014 film succeeds in its own right at being a disaster film, but the film almost feels like a MUTO film with Godzilla acting as a secondary thought to some extent. Yeah, he is the way we win, but the film is never really about him. This movie tried to be like a Toho film with a grander budget, and it succeeded at that in spades.

Is there bad writing at times? Yep. But I don't care. This movie is just good, old fashioned monster fun. Just like the Godzilla films I grew up with.

The audience score is all they care about unless they're Oscar bait.

Just got back from seeing this. I'm no Godzilla aficionado by any means, but other than this being about 15-20 mins too long, I enjoyed this in all its goofy glory. 2014 Godzilla got a little too caught up in the 'mystery' and lost all its spark when Brian Cranston was killed off. This one, as silly as it can get at times, has a lot more life to it.

I will say this, I still have problems with how these monster fights are being shot. In the last film there was too much build up with no real pay off. This time, there's a lot of fighting, but it keeps cutting back to the humans all the time. Like, I paid to see giant beasts beat the **** out of each other and the last thing I want is for the fights to be continuously interrupted. Only other criticism is I felt like they hyped up the other too monsters Mothra and Rodan too much. I don't feel like either really did much to warrant being in the film. A little more development with those two wouldn't have gone astray. But maybe it's just pure fan service.

Anyway, I enjoyed it for what it was. It's a tad too long, it gets a bit ridiculous at times, and some of the fights don't go on long enough, but the acting is good, the effects are good for the most part, and most importantly I was entertained. I'm not sure what the critics were expecting, but this film isn't nearly as bad as what some are making it out to be.

An entertaining 6.5/10

What’s the post credits, just curious if it is what’s been leaked. Glad you had a good time man.

they found one of the heads of Ghidorah in Asia and sold it to the bad guy - we can speculate will lead to Mecha Ghidorah or some genetic engineering - in any case King Ghidorah is NOT by any means dead

It could be Mecha-Ghidorah or Mechagodzilla formed from it. In the Heisei films, yes there was a Mecha-Ghidorah, but Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II was created using one of Ghidorah's heads from the battle with Mecha-Ghidorah.

So...one thing i’m trying to get a pulse on from reviews/ reactions is...is there too much monster action or not enough? I seem to be seeing conflicting opinions on this.

If there was a scale from 1 to 10 on sufficient Monster content/scenes

Godzilla (2014): 3/10
Godzilla King Of The Monsters: 6/10

I was much more satisfied with the amount of monster content in this movie. I just hated

how they didn’t have Godzilla, Mothra AND Rodan teamup against Ghidorah. Instead they kill off Mothra, make Rodan Ghidorah’s yah team partner (essentially a villain) and Godzilla goes super Saiyan. Rodan was the highlight for me he was sooo badass and then he bows down to Godzilla at the end. Rodan Looked absolutely perfect to me.

Every movie deserves exactly whatever RT score they get. The Tomatometer is not a valuation of how good the movie is. Godzilla King of the Monsters is not 44% good. A 90% fresh movie is not a better movie than a 60% film. The Tomatometer is a percentage of critics who recommend the film. That's it. Look, you can absolutely criticize critics for thinking their opinion is wrong, but all too often I see this "This movie doesn't deserve this percentage" and it's just not a valid criticism.

I strongly disagree with movies “deserving” the RT score they get.

I rate Venom a 4.5/5

And a 90% RT rating from me

I don’t consider the RT rating anymore before watching a movie. I DO FOCUS MORE ON AUDIENCE SCORE.
The critics are the same people who determine Best Picture at the Oscars (snubbing many more deserving films such as Shawshank Redemption, and Alfred Hitchcock, Tom Cruise, etc.) when a lot of the movies being nominated tend to have some sort of hidden sociopath political agenda or are very Art house and for the bourgeoisie aka not for regular people, the masses. Movies with conservative values tend to get poor reviews from critics and better reviews from audiences.

Especially when you account the discrepancy between the audience and critics for movies like

The Boondock Saints

This issue is the editing. Imagine watching a UFC fight and then every 20 seconds cutting to the commentary team. You can't settle into the fights. There was no choreography to them.

Yeah, but a UFC fight also doesn't have a running storyline about the commentary, and the fight itself doesn't require thousands of CG artists to realize. So it is not exactly apples to apples.

So.....I desperately wanted to love this. I grew up with Godzilla movies, I have various figures including multiple Godzillas, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, and I was hyping for months over the trailers.

On the one hand, it is a pretty old-school Godzilla movie (with all, good and bad, that that implies). Monster mash in between a ridiculous convoluted "plot" and goofy and/or one-dimensional humans scurrying around.

Maybe I overhyped myself into expecting something more epic, or maybe it's the operatic trailers, but I was a bit underwhelmed. The vibe of global apocalyptic devastation we get from the trailers goes by too fleetingly and mostly offscreen and have an impact. That shot of a devastated Washington DC, for example, is a great visual shot in and of itself, but it goes by in two seconds and it's all we see of it. The rest of the movie is just following around the little gaggle of humans globe-trotting all over the place.

Honestly I preferred the tone and the direction of Gareth Edwards in 2014. Daughtery sacrificed that ground level realism and verisimilitude for more CGI spectacle, and I missed it not feeling as "real" and almost docudrama as 2014 did.

The only kinda "actor" moments are Vera Farmiga's video monologue, and
Serizawa's sacrifice
, although the latter lacked the effect it was meant to have because the character was so thinly-developed. Charles Dance got nothing to do, and I kind of LOL'ed at
how laughably throwaway Sally Hawkins was killed off. Also did Vera Farmiga die or not? I wasn't even clear on that.

It also kinda felt like shoehorning Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan into one movie was a little too much. Mothra was pretty underused. Rodan had a cool introduction, but after that he didn't get much to do besides kinda be Ghidorah's right-hand man.

Also I was super stoked to see Ghidorah, and even he felt kinda underwhelming. Maybe because again, the trailers give this vibe of global apocalypse and then the movie underwhelms with it. Or maybe I was just overhyping myself.

Godzilla's first appearance making his "threat display" outside the underwater base, him looking down at Kyle Chandler on the sub, and the scene between he and Serizawa were all pretty awesome moments.

when Godzilla tail sweeps Ghidorah in the background I almost clapped. But it wasn’t even the focus of the shot but still was a great move that harkened back to the classic films.

My complaint is that there is basically no reason for the daughter character to be in any given scene. Everything regarding her character felt like a draft away, as if they couldn't figure out how to give her much of a reason to be in the movie. If she had somehow been integral to the communication device or something that'd be one thing but instead she's just...around.

What are you taking about

She

Was the catalyst in getting all the monsters in one place and setting up the final battle

But they really didn't.

I thought they did. We need someone with a stopwatch to give us the exact runtime but I feel like if the first one had 15 minutes this one had at least 30 as much as 40

You can tell story through choreography. Something that's been over looked with all these recent giant monster films is there's no real thought been put into how the fights play out.

Yes !! I agree wholeheartedly!! I saw it in Imax as well!! The movie was great start to finish!! It had so many Easter eggs and callbacks, that I don’t think I caught them all, but wow just wow.. I can’t speak for anyone else and their opinion on this film, but imo it’s one of the best giant monster flicks of all time!! It was great!! My son and I really enjoyed it!!

That was a touching scene between Serizawa and Godzilla.. I loved the classic Godzilla theme as well!! The ending credits as they rolled were more of a build up than the post credit scene .I was really excited when I saw that last drawing on the credits!!

This.

This is what an Toho Godzilla with American visuals and epic ness and realism is supposed to look like. It respected Toho. If I was Japanese I would give it a standing ovation.

I loved the newer Gamera movies and the Netflix Ultraman is a masterpiece. This is probably the best Godzilla movie ever made by an American. The best Godzilla movie of all time is still Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. This movie did its job and made me want to rewatch all the Godzilla movies from my childhood
