Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Yeah, apparently a lot of people didn't either.

This is probably Vera Farmiga's best performance but worse written character, I totally understand why critics think the human characters are one-noted. I saw the movie because of the monster action though, so it didn't really bother me, because action was really good.

Btw does anyone know the name of the other monsters in the movie? IIRC there are
3 of them in the scenes where the monsters bowed to Godzilla, 2 looked like hairy spiders (one with 6 legs, the other with 8 legs I think), the other looked like elephant but with 2 trunks close together and a tiny head).
Are they original monsters or from Toho?

Edit:

Box office predictions?

I’m predicting 30-50 million domestic opening weekend

Final domestic box office of $200-300 million

I hope it does well in Asia

No it got 6M+ from Thursday previews (started at 4pm) so 30M OW would be extremely front-loaded. But yeah I don't think it'll get much more than 50M though, probably 55M but that's enough to be No 1 this weekend.

And even with 55M there's no way it can leg to 200M domestic let alone 300M. Verified audience score on RT is 90s so good WoM can probably carry it to 140-150M from 55M OW.

No, they are not Toho monsters. The mammoth should be Titanus Behemoth. The spidery one should be Titanus Scylia. Then there was a white MUTO.

Just seen it.

I rarely get cinematic bloodlust but I haven’t wished death on a character so badly than I did with Vera Farmiga’s. But truth be told, outside of Zhang Ziyi and Aisha Hinds, all the humans could’ve died and I wouldn’t have cared.

The monsters were cool, Ghidorah looked f’ing amazing, but honestly they could’ve kept Rodan out of it. He was really filler.

I’d give it a strong 7.

Dance did an interview with the Guardian where his thoughts on the film was that the catering was great. Don't think that will go down too well but he's really up front about how he views taking such roles; it's going to pay for something.

Anyway, having seen it, when it's good it's fantastic. When it's not, it's tedious. Good outweighs the bad for me.

Well it's not like he got anything to do.

Same here. I want this movie to do well! As of right now, I would rank the monster verse:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Godzilla (2014)
Kong: Skull Island (2017)

I have Kong skull island second on that list, but yeah I agree Kotm is 1st

If anything, his role here was basically
set up for the future. Has Charles Dance been confirmed to return in GvK?

Saw it today, and really enjoyed myself.
Maybe I’m a glutton for spectacle (except in Transformers case, where Bumblebee was great but the last two main series films I couldn’t stand at all), but the lack of depth to the story and some characters didn’t bother me at all. This film was about the King of the Monsters and it delivered. I had a blast!

Will say, loved the call backs to the original film, but I loved the obvious nod to G vs. Destroyah when Godzilla was about to explode. Loved the Burning Godzilla look on the Legendary design.

What are you taking about

She

Was the catalyst in getting all the monsters in one place and setting up the final battle
And what exactly was her motive in doing so again? Also that doesn't say anything about her complete useleness for the first 90 minutes of the movie.

I wish it was the Peter Jackson Kong I don’t like the look of the new one. Jackson’s has character and a distinct look that trade mark scar and scowling look. Jackson’s On the right looks like a legitimate gorilla whereas the new one on the left looks like a giant chimpanzee

Jackson's Kong is just a literal silverback gorilla blown upp in size. The Skull Island Kong is an actual fantasy monster and based on the original Kong.

she over heard the plan from her mother to stop Ghidorah

Did anyone else think that one of the other Titans bore more than a passing resemblance to the Cloverfield monster? :p

So that was the Godzilla movie of my dreams. It really was. The utter insanity of the Toho monster throwdowns but with an American budget. I can't stop smiling.

Just saw it (still in the theater awaiting the post credits scene) and this is exactly how I felt. Much better than the previous Godzilla film and obviously better than the 90s one. So many cool monster battles, and human characters that I actually gave a crap about. No idea why this got worse reviews than the last Godzilla movie; this one kicked the living **** out of that one. Bring on Godzilla vs. Kong.

If it makes you feel better Michael Bay ****ed up Chicago twice and Rampage got us last year.

But this was a different kind of satisfaction man. You know NYC and Boston... we hate each other’s guts lol.

Yeah, apparently a lot of people didn't either.
Everyone in my screening must've known, I was sitting toward the back and saw only one couple leave right after the credits started rolling. Everyone else stayed.

A little petty on my end but as a New Yorker...

I thought it was great how Godzilla and King Ghidorah decimated Boston all in the last fight. It’s about time cities other than NYC and Tokyo get ravaged in these kaiju movies.

As a fellow New Yorker, me too. I kept thinking "Tear it down!!! DESTROY!". The Yankee fan in me came out.

Rodan was probably my favorite character. His design was very badass and I liked how his personality was basically "suck up to whoever is winning." Total fairweather friend lol.
I've always had a soft spot for Rodan ever since I was a kid. I loved this design because it also kind of reminded me of the Skeksis from The Dark Crystal.

I Loved it, my family loved it, the audience loved it. The movie even got applause at the end. I thought this was better than Godzilla (2014) from the action to the actors even if the characters were doing dumb things the actors sold it well.

Also I liked that cover of GoGo Godzilla that system of a down did with apparently Deathklok from Metalocalypse.
