Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

The first Rodan sequence is probably my favorite part of the movie. That was just so amazing to watch. I could have sat through an hour of that. When that one pilot ejected... :hehe:

I have a warped sense of humor, that part cracked me up.

Sidebar, but I wish one character had said “the devil has three heads” line somewhere in the movie. I really liked that description.

I will say, I was surprised by how much they referenced Kong and Skull Island.

Yeah same here. When Silicon Valley Guy just kinda name dropped Kong in that hearing, I was like, “Wait, does everyone know about Kong now?”

So does Godzilla eat any of the dead monsters? How does he regain his strength and stamina after a huge boxing bout or battle with the other monsters? Do they go into the biology, culinary habits/diet, and environment of these monsters? I really would be interested in scenes dealing directly with these aspects to give the monsters more depth and character.

For those who know the character history, any chance Mothra can be resurrected? Really didn't get enough of her and she was fantastic in this.

Doh nevermind, I get it now.

I’m just gonna say it...I think this is the best depiction of Mothra I’ve ever seen...I’d watch a Legendary Mothra trilogy. Composed by Bear McCreary of course.

I am so curious about this. :funny:

Yeah, it gets crazy...this movie is the most Japanese western film I’ve ever seen

Oh, now I am tempted to go again. One of my issue with a lot of adaptations from the Far East, is how little of what makes Japanese stories work are left out.

While most of the dialogue wasn't exactly worth writing home about, I must admit I did like the exchange about how "slaying the dragon" was a purely Western concept. I don't know if it's accurate as I'm pretty unfamiliar with Eastern mythology, but I thought it was a nice idea, at least.

And Dragonball. There was some serious Spirit Bomb action at the end there.

In the East, dragons are benevolent creatures, a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Emperors in ancient China use dragons as a symbol or imperial strength, often wearing outfits in yellow color adorned with dragon art. The emperors themselves are often referred to as or compared to dragons.

I had to work on artwork for Asian clients in a previous job I was in so I can confirm Dragons are very much respected in the East. Dragons being a threat is more of a European thing. I like how they made Ghidorah essentially the inspiration for all of our giant serpent myths, from dragons, to the hydra, to the rainbow serpent, just about every major culture has some type of giant snake-like beast in its stories. So, there's a logic there that I appreciate.

Plus in contrast with Western dragons that are associated with fire Eastern dragons are associated with water. The Chinese dragons' live in the sea/ big lakes and bring clouds and rain. Moderate weather is very important in cultures that relied on farming so dragons were revered.

It was pretty much what I expected after the reviews hit. It's basically a live-action Saturday morning cartoon with a big budget. Mindless, dull, boring. Undeveloped characters that I never cared about, uninspired and chaotic action, surprising poor CGI at times. They even managed to bury the score under the sound mix.

Just a dreadful movie, and basically killed my hype for any future movies. Hopefully GvK will be something special.

3/10

I wanna say this was either a 5/10 or 6/10 for me, I might lean towards the latter.

Just like the 2014 Godzilla, the stuff you pay for delivers. The monster stuff is good and I think it delivers. Some cool designs though personally I thought the CGI felt a bit lackluster? Like it wasn't terrible but it looked very "middle of the road" and considering the cast (while good) didnt have any massive superstars and most of the scenes were either filmed in a control room or a cargo bay I would have thought the CGI would have been cranked up even more.

What drags the movie down is the plot and the characters though. I like Kyle Chandler and I think he's been great in the few things I've seen him in, but his character is the distant dad who started drinking after the divorce and he went away but now he's back to tell all the scientist and military how wrong they are and both save the world and get his daughter back. The writing for some of the characters was almost comically bad. The mom makes some decisions which will purge millions of innocent lives from earth and in the end they try to flip it in a way like we should feel sorry for her, yet all I was hoping was to see her squashed by Godzilla.

Another thing that annoys me a lot that might be specific to my own taste is just the military/scientist mumbo jumbo they throw in. Like they don't know where Godzilla is but they are tracking his heartrate and they know that in 5 minutes 46 seconds he's gonna explode because "radiation". In the first movie we followed the humans through the eyes of the military as well, I would have preferred just following a more normal family that gets caught up in things. I guess that Godzilla to many people need that element of scientists in a control room being terrified but it almost comes off as a video game. "We need to nuke Godzilla so we regen him back to 100% hp and he will also get a damage buff and then he can take on Ghidorah in the final boss fight".

Scientists and military types are almost par for the course in movies dealing with giant monsters or aliens. Or Monsters vs. Aliens.

Jackson's Kong is just a literal silverback gorilla blown upp in size. The Skull Island Kong is an actual fantasy monster and based on the original Kong.

I like both ! Peter Jackson’s movie was a great love letter to Kong 33 and Kong fans, and Skull island Kong was straight action, and I loved both for what they were.

Hell let Daugherty do the reboot of DB. With accurate actors.

Saw this at 10:30 last night in IMAX.

Work kicked my ass yesterday and I was tired going in to the movie, which I know was definitely a factor in my Godzilla experience, but I found the movie surprisingly tedious, boring, and repetitive? Most of the monster action was great, but I didn't enjoy the film nearly as much as I thought I would.

Need to see it again when I'm more fresh.

Movie of the year. Don't understand the complaints. All the critic complaints and complaints here are complaints about things that make it a stylistically classic Godzilla movie.

Video game like? Power point? Cliche characters? Monster worship? Why would us Godzilla fans prefer a well put together drama of characters and good writing with a monster battle story that matches that tone?

This was everything a godzilla movie should be, but I guess some people have a more nuanced standard of films and enjoy based on quality, opposed to taking it for what it is.

Critics and these opinions are seemingly like the at minority. My girlfriend liked it, my best friend LOVED it and he flat out said he doesn't care for Godzilla and is only interested cause ghidorsh looks cool. My audience loved it. It got a round of applause after.

I want to go watch it again. Honest 10/10 from me.

Godzilla [2014] is the BvS of the MonsterVerse. Justice League bombed due to the toxic WoM of BvS (the former as a movie was no great shakes either but the OW pretty much solidified that BvS did irreparable damage) and KOTM is similarly paying for the sins of it's predecessor.

G:KOTM is under-performing or just flat out flopping everywhere (except Japan). Even 400m WW isn't a safe bet atm. The movie is DOA.
