Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Unless they go with the darker route of the 2012 Oppenheimer teaser, but that's just me.

I just hope GvK isn't like, the last Godzilla movie to be released in theaters worldwide period.

Fairly certain one of the big things with the Godzilla announcement, was that Toho was looking at more international distributions. I would imagine especially after Broly.

Well after Godzilla vs Kong... no point really.
You know I always wondered where the franchise would go after GvK. I mean it's like Justice League or Avengers where there always could be a new different threat to fight. Aliens, robots, interdementional beings, demons, etc. With the MonsterVerse...what else can you do but just keep having kaiju fight each other. And I'm sure that'll get old quick. Godzilla 2014= He fought 2 Kaiju, Kong Skull Island= he kaiju/giant monsters, Godzilla KOTM= they threw so many kaiju at the screen. Like making a GvK 2, in concept just seems kinda bleh

Bascially what I'm saying is: This universe never seemed that sustainable to me story-wise. Not like in concept a DC, a Marvel, a Harry Potter, a Universal Monsters, a Star Wars universe would be

And yet as DC movies kind of scatter off into separate threads, and the Universal Monster verse was dead on arrival, this is the only one outside of Marvel that's really going in any real capacity.

That's why I said "in concept"
In concept they make sense as universes and are great ideas. In execution, they weren't

I have. It's maybe tries to have a family drama at the center of it but it doesn't do it well at all. Its poorly executed and a chore to watch.

"Oh nooo which parent will 11 choose between? Wait who cares? Who are these people? What was their conflict again? 11 chooses to stay with her mom who has ostensibly been kidnapped by murderous terrorists? Cool I guess."

The film then goes on to try to backfill what happened with them but man do I just not care by that point.

This film tries to skate by on what it gestures towards rather than what it does.
I totally agree. The motivations of those characters don't make sense and they keep changing for no reason.

Uh, excuse me...

Tbh, I'm not sure I'd be interested in any more of these after GvK anyway, so if that's all we get from Hollywood 'til the inevitable reboot a decade or so down the line, I'll be just fine with that. I'm just glad we're at least definitely getting that one. If it hadn't already gone into production, I'd be worried about that at the moment.

Are we just talking money when discussing the universes? I ask because it seems that The Conjuring 1 & 2 and Annabelle 2 are the ones that made a good impression but the other 3 didn't.

Well we might be talking about the most profitable series of films outside of Marvel, Star Wars and Fast, so it is definitely going strong. The post was more of a joke on the fact that they made a Conjuring universe that is doing really well, where everything else is kind of failing.

Gotcha Darth.

See, probably before this, I might have agreed. And while I won't be too upset, given the way that this movie cracked open the possibilities of what they can do in this universe, I absolutely want to see more. But Toho should be giving me a Godzilla fix at least.

I think the sad thing about these two movies are playing out, Toho is going to be hard pressed to find someone who will want to pay for these movies. There is little to no value in them. So I guess we will be back to the cheaper fair for another decade at least.

You know let's be honest about something. The 2014 movie did not match the tone of the 2012 teaser. Also, Edwards blatantly lied about the tone and approach he was taking with his film.

I don't think he lied about the tone or approach. I just don't think he is capable of it. There is a reason Rogue One needed intervention.

But his action, it is of the quality where it gives the impression of a lot more gravitas.

See, I think Shin Godzilla being such a success for them means they will be willing to give their movies a little extra time and a little extra money. But, no matter what, Toho is not a hollywood studio, and is inherently limited.

I would seriously love to know "officially" who's brainchild it was to kill Cranston's character in the first 30mins. I can't imagine early test screenings were cool with it either. I knew at that point this concept was not in the right hands.

Okay!

Mako was... scared of monsters? And she refused to disobey her adoptive father, because filial piety or something. But then she found her confidence with to the help of Charlie Hunnam.

Charlie Hunnam felt guilty for the death of his brother. But he got over it when he found a new partner in Mako. He was also quite cocky and stubborn? I think? Or was that the other guy?

Charlie Day was terrible.

Look, I'm not saying they were great, but at least they didn't bore me. I liked them enough to root for them instead of the kaijus. :o

The only other person on this earth I've ever wanted to punch more than Miles Teller was Charlie Day after I saw him in Pacific Rim.

How much of a success was it? Looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem much of one.

I don't know. I just rewatched it and I don't think it's a complete tonal betrayal.

Like the trailer showed a serious take and that's what the movie gave us.

Now the Kong Skulls Island Comic Con trailer, that was a complete farce in terms of tone of the actual movie. Or the Transformers teasers
