Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Yeah, Chandler’s character is a big part of the problem. I’ve seen him called a Gary Stu and while I generally hate that term, here I am forced to agree. Having him be always right sucks all the tension out of the human parts of the film. No one grows or learns, they just wait for him to tell them what to do. The problem isn’t that it’s dumb, the problem is it’s boring. Dumb can still be entertaining. Boring not so much.

Re the spoiler (ish) stuff
It hit me the minute the character I call Mr. Hollowworld starts talking about how he was right about a hollow world and the repeats it like three more times, followed by the sub getting sucked through a hollow world tunnel and ending up in what I was surprised no one actually called “lost Seatopia,” then finally they trigger a nuclear bomb, which of course is the catalyst for Seatopia sending Megalon out. I guess it was just me but it was like getting repeatedly hit in the face with a big rubber cockroach...

The film could have really used the other characters to have solved some of the problems because like you said, it gets boring. Those 4 issues in the first godzilla scene could have all been done by 4 different characters, it would have probably helped a little bit.

On your spoiler, you are right, I forgot that the monster is from an underground world so they could be hinting at him arriving GvK which could be cool, I've always liked the design.

I mean, that wasn't really her plan. While some destruction was to be expected, Vera fully expected the Titans to start to heal the earth, much like Vegas and San Francisco were.

And she was correct, based on the credits sequence. She was just wrong about Ghidorah being the same sort of healing entity as the rest of them.

I have not seen this movie yet, so how big of a role does Ziyi Zhang have in the movie and how is her English?

I'd say she was fine and had a small amount of screentime. However, and spoilers galore in case you want to read them,
they make her one of the Mothra twins in this interesting take on them. Her family lineage is basically comprised of female twins.

Rotten Tomatoes update:

She was the star of the movie for me! I didn't even know she was in the movie, so it was a nice surprise.

Her English is alright but I can definitely tell English isn't her first language due to her accent/diction.

Her english seems to be better than the last time I heard it in TMNT 2007.

Because audience scores on sites like RT tell us so much. :o

Before last month, you would be right, but RT has changed their audience score to a verified system, so it's at least more legitimate than it was before.

86% of 11,466 people who paid to see the movie gave it a positive score? I am shocked. :o

Either way, it's not really worth dwelling over. All that matters is what you personally think of the movie (and no, before someone points the finger at me, this is not me saying frick the critics).

Hoping to catch it again in IMAX - but then again, it was so awesome that I forgot all about that while I was watching it. If not in IMAX, I'm definitely still seeing it again.

It maybe didn't have the strongest character drama, but it was actually quite engaging (for me, anyway) to keep me captivated while the MVPs of the movie (the monsters) were offscreen - and boy, does it deliver on the action.

I want to list things that I liked, but I don't know how to tag spoilers (at least not yet, and I'm on my phone at work at the moment.

I have watched it in imax every time I have saw it, and have loved every minute of it.

Well, I mean, frick the critics to an extent. At the end of the day, I feel however I feel about a movie. Good critics score or not. I liked this movie. All that matters

But that is what the critics are doing to. That is what makes this all so ridiculous. To you your feelings should be paramount. But critics aren't some sort of abstract concept. They are people just giving their opinion on films as well. And yet, we must frick them.

I agree that they're giving their opinion and are not evil. They're doing their job. But at the same time, something being well reviewed or not doesn't change my opinion once I have seen it.

Of course. It doesn't change my opinion of a film either, though I do like discussions on films and that has made me look at them differently before. But I think there is a fundamental difference between not agreeing with the critics and trying to prove them "wrong" or something like that. It all becomes very emotional teenager and then it suddenly becomes the critics "fault" that something doesn't do well. This movies biggest problem was never going to be the critics nor do critics have it "out" for these types of movies. Ignoring that maybe the 2014 Godzilla sunk this movie a long time ago.

And I get this isn't what you are saying. But the "frick the critics" thing, comes off less like what they say doesn't really effect me and more like they can go to hell with their opinion.

I agree. There is no agenda against this movie or anything like that and the screw critics montra can come off like a fan s of a sports team. I don't discount them entirely, I just don't always agree, and that can be for a rotten movie being good our vice versa. This is one where I don't agree.

The BO watch for KOTM will make me remember the BO watch back in the day for SR, when we were watching and hoping it got to the point where they could make a follow up (which it did, with MOS). For this, it would be in relation to the franchise as a whole and what they will do to GvK. Which has been filmed, but they are concerned about it now because of KOTM.

PS to everyone here, why are people not interested in this franchise? And I mean post-G14. Bc while KSI was successful, and I hope is the same for KOTM, it was a slow burn. Because I feel KOTM is an example of me saying to people "just accept it for what it is" and those people don't want to because G14, like the mindset was for Sony for G98, was an American studio showing Toho how to make a Godzilla film correctly.

Trust me, this along with the commitment of the filmmakers making a monster fight movie that focuses on those fights 80% over the humans, are one out of a million theories over why people disliked this movie.

I feel KOTM will be a cult film, agree?

Because the way I've seen some people review the film is: the human story sucks, therefore everything else sucks too because of it.

I don't entirely disagree with what you're saying, but c'mon, you can't tell me reactions like that aren't hyperbole.
Are the humans not the majority of the film? Watching Skull Island yesterday, that movie is mostly about the humans, just like Godzilla 2014. And they kind of suck. So while I had fun with the movie, it isn't suddenly going to go on my list of favorites. I get wanting to see beat'em ups, but if you are going to make a movie focused only on that, do that. It can be 80-90 mins and awesome. But they made a 2 hour movie, which seems to be mostly humans doing stuff. To the point that the finale is cut up in such a way that they continually cut from the monster action to the humans.

Why people like or dislike a movie is completely up to them. But for me, if I am not engaged by the characters, especially the main characters, I am not really going to be engaged. I don't go and watch action movies just for action. I like action that tells a story. Heck tells the main story. One of the things I really love about John Wick is how much the story and action blends. The action isn't there to replace the story, it is a part of it.

If the human characters serve no purpose, why are they in these movies?

The human story does serve a purpose, to provide context to the Monster story. This film makes the mistake of trying to add slightly more to the human story beyond that, but it’s absolutely Monarch existing so we understand the whos and whys of the monsters.
