Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Btw any spoilers on what happens to all the other titans introduced in the last movie?
Maybe they get killed by MechaG and that’s why they need Kong?
It's possible MechaGodzilla could go around disguised as Godzilla destroying cities, killing people and Titans alike, hence how Kong gets brought into the picture. I think that's most likely how they'll do it and then the real Godzilla will inevitably get involved.

Probably my favorite scene from 2014. The way it’s shot, the visuals and the cinematography. The score. The POV of the monsters fighting. So damn good.

Still gives me goosebumps.

That is also an amazingly filmed sequence.

I also love when you just see Godzilla’s tail swinging through the smoke, then his silhouette.

It’s filled with great visuals like that.

Edwards has a great mind for visuals. Rogue One had stuff like that too, like the Death Star moving in front of the sun and creating an eclipse, and the horror movie way Vader’s rampage was filmed.

The Vader scene was added later and directed by Tony Gilroy, actually.

Even though I have been burnt more times than I would like to admit, I'm still casually excited for this.

Godzilla 2014 - I like a lot of what the film tried to do in theory. In execution it was a bit messy. They did tease Godzilla too much without paying it off enough, but I did like the idea of following what was happening more from the human perspective of a few main characters. Unfortunately those characters weren't very interesting. :(

Kong: Skull Island - IMO the best out of the 3 and had some fun colors, some solid action and some enjoyable characters too. I have a soft spot for 'going to a secluded island' type plots though but this one was pretty solid IMO.

Godzilla: King of Monsters - The monsters themselves were cool but the movie itself was one of the most stupid I've seen (even for a movie of this type) and the movie was either boring human stuff OR CGI monsters fighting which could be cool if I cared about what was happening in the movie. Sadly, the worst one for me.

But yeah Godzilla vs Kong... should be fun. I just hope they can get a B-tier level story and characters because when you can't even get a passable foundation, the monsters fighting just feels so dull and hollow. Like if there's actual stakes and characters you care about, that will make the difference.

I gotta be honest, I don't see how one critiques the human characters in the Godzilla films and praises the ones on Kong: Skull Island. In the end, you like what you like, but for me Kong's main characters don't have much real character. Except the guy played by John C. Reilly. He has an awesome story. But, the best bits of his story all happen off screen. I would have preferred the movie about the Japanese and American WWII soldiers being forced to try to survive together and become friends. Instead, all that great stuff is backstory and the main focus is mostly generic soldier characters.

I just don't see how they are any better than the ones in G2014 or KOTM. Except that they quip!

Oh yeah I fully agree. I think with 'enjoyable' I meant mostly John C Reilly like you say. It's a shame because if you just get some decent characters that you are invested in, it would make these movies so much better.

I agree. Honestly, when I saw K:SI the first time, my immediate reaction was why in the heck was the movie not about the soldiers at the beginning? All the good story was there, let's see it!

Yes! It's the type of plot I would really want from a movie where the main character(s) find themselves on an island with dangerous creatures without knowing what they are in for. I think it would be cool in a Jurassic Park type movie or Skull Island like you said.

It's always a bummer to me that they go with the 'People sent to the island on an expedition' story because it would be more cool IMO if characters ended up on the island after a shipwreck or whatever and they have to survive/explore and get out of the situation without knowing what they are in for. :p

I don’t know; maybe it’s a different strokes thing but I liked the characters in Skull Island. They weren’t the deepest action heroes by any means but I enjoyed them possibly just based on the actors if not the writing. I found the characters in the Gareth Edwards Godzilla film just flat out awful. Poorly written and so poorly directed that good actors weren’t able to elevate bad material.

I also enjoyed the characters in Skull Island aswell, but I still think they could have done more with both John C. Reily and Sam Jackson since they were easily the most interesting characters in the movie.

Atleast they all had personality though which can go a long ways for me in monster movies, especially when the characters aren't super deep or anything.

I think it's time for a rewatch of Skull Island for me. It's been staring at me on my HBO Max list for the last week.

Watched Gojira for the first time in ages last weekend and it is just as effective, scary and timely now as it was back then. Instead of Atomic bombs we all have been hit with the COVID-19 bomb.

John C. Reilly and Sam Jackson I will give you. Maybe John Goodman to a much lesser degree. Everyone else, did they? Tom Hiddleston came off no better than say Adrian Brody in Predators to me. Everyone else basically the same. Super generic. No arcs. Ultimately fodder. Godzilla had Cranston and Watanabe, so I call it a push. KOTM maybe I would give you, but it runs circles around Kong or G2014 in action.

I think Godzilla 2014’s characters may be a little better written, but ATJ and Elizabeth Olson are both pretty awful in everything they do, so it’s hard to tell. Skull Island had a great cast, but a terrible script. You get about the same result.

Reminds me of the 1998 movie Deep Rising, which pretty much does exactly that with its cliffhanger ending. Imagine if the approaching monster was Kong....

I heard somewhere that Deep Rising was really supposed to lead into a King Kong movie given its cliffhanger ending. And given that they tried to develop another one in the 90's but it ended up falling through, is it true?

10 Best Godzilla Movies - IGN

IGN posts things to get your blood pressure up. The top 5 should've been Gojira (as #1), Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, Godzilla vs Destroyah, Mothra vs Godzilla and then Shin Godzilla.

In that order.

I understand there are many different opinions in the Godzilla fanbase. But this list just outright baffles me. And I understand the love the Heisei series gets. But I am very confused by the list....

I thought it was a solid list, the Heisei movies are a league above most of the Showa era movies that are not the original Gojira. Granted I haven't seen many of the millennium era movies so I might be biased.

I personally thought Shin Godzilla was meh at best. I hated his design and those googly eyes just made me laugh every time. Return of Godzilla should've been in its place imo.

Silly SB, it's IGN! :o

When I saw Shin Godzilla I didn't really like it as a monster movie and the two people I watched it with, seemed a bit bored. I watched it again on my own though and I appreciated it a lot more as the Gojira film it is.

I mean the philosophical angle of Japan and its use of armed forces and how stupid politicians are in the face of a disaster and how it leads to more death because of inaction is cool and all, but yeah, even as a Goji fan I was kinda bored at all.
