Small follow-up, if it wasn't clear, I'm not trying to challenge your opinion or anything, just get some idea of whether your opinion might line up with mine and give me some idea of what to expect.
No worries. Didn’t take it that way at all.
Godzilla 14: The opening is great up until Cranston dies. After that, the human storyline is pretty weak. The set-pieces are all fantastic, especially Hawaii. I think they got too cute with the Jaws “less is more” thing with Godzilla. Godzilla is why you’re there, unlike the shark in Jaws. It has the best filmmaking of the series. I’d say 3.5/5.
Kong Skull Island: I find everything before they get to the island to be pretty dreadful. The characters are flat and the dialogue is mostly horrendous. However, once they get to the island, we get the best monster action in the whole series (until GvK) and the movie plays pretty well as a giant B-movie. The filmmaking isn’t as strong( bad script, I don’t like the look of the film and the Apocalypse Now stuff is so hollow), but it’s more entertaining than Godzilla 14. Overall, 3/5, but thats with the dreadful first have and a second half that is really entertaining.
Godzilla KOTM: basically a mixture of the first two. It takes itself as seriously as ‘14, but has a lot of the weak character’s of Kong with also plenty of the more B-movie stuff of Kong. The action is better, but still too much from the human’s perspective. It feels a lot like a big budget Showa film, which has its positives and negatives. I’d say probably a 3/5.
As you can see, I am not the hugest fan of the series, but I give GvK a 4/5 on first viewing and ALL of these I liked more on second viewing.
