I am also very curious to see if there are any references to Kong during KoTM itself (if so, probably very subtle that most people would miss).

The last paragraph seems interesting but didn't they kind of already show that in Skull Island with the local people? I've got to be honest the only thing they do next that would get me really excited is Godzilla vs Kong.

Godzilla dying is likely. I do believe the Toho deal ends after 2020, so this would be the last Legendary Godzilla film. That said, I still don't think Kong and Godzilla spend the entire movie as enemies. I think there is a threat like Mechagodzilla or something in this, and ultimately fighting the common threat alongside Kong, Godzilla likely dies and passes the King of the Monsters mantle to Kong.

The director of Godzilla vs Kong actually did compare Kong being an underdog compared to Godzilla as Rocky vs Drago, so it seems like they agree.
