How about this? Bizarro, also played by Brandon Routh, is in the movie and his terror confuses people because he looks so much like Superman. And before the final battle, Superman comes out in the original Superman suit (not the darker colors, but like the one worn by Christopher Reeve). I think the audience would really like that.

^There are plenty from the comics that would be awesome, Superman planting Darkseid on The Source Wall, Superman taking a beating from Metallo and still getting back up, Superman vs Doomsday, The Ruin Saga, the Godfall saga, too many to name, but it would need the right director.

At this point, IMO, Singer IS that director.
