Comics Good times with Spidey

cover.pl

This has always been one of my favourite storylines, when Firelord went crazy and attacked New York, the ultimate David n Goliath story. If I remember correctly it was a two parter and for most of the story Spidey's been using some dodging hoping for reinforcements to arrive, but with FF still gone from the Secret Wars, Spiderman finally realized he was the only one there to stop Firelord.

Guess who had his butt whupped? Here's a clue, it's not the webslinger. :spidey:

Truly awesome and fun 2 parter. One of my fave mindless Spidey fist fights.

Almost forgot about that issue. That's another one of my favs. Back when Spidey was an actual "badass" and faught. Anyway, I still prefer the Juggernaut battle more but the Firelord battle was still great.

I got to sit down and read ASM 003, a black and white reprint of it that I bought for my sister. It brought me a smile, just for being a classic.

A classic indeed

Ock owned Spidey so badly when they first met, that it caused Peter to hang up his webs. And then Ock went on to take over the U.S. Atomic research facility, bringing the city to it's knees at the threat of his hold on the powerful radioactivity he could unleash on the city

What a villain. All that in his first outing.

Hmmmm...within the past several months.......

Death in The Family...since I just realized the title aint on the cover :)

I definately enjoyed it, and actually sitting down to reread it was a blast. I definately respect a villian that isn't about to *****-foot with his new abilities. The whole slap across Spider-man's face showed complete arrogance and confidance; Ock is definately becoming a much more higher ranked villian for me. :) Plus, only have read Year One, seeing the original comic made it all the better.

Can you count Peter and MJ's marriage as one of those good times?

Of course. But Joe Q would not agree with you ;)

Has anyone here read Adam Troy Castro's trilogy of novels about the Sinister Six?? Now they were fantastic.I wish Marvel would adapt them into a comic mini, with Castro writing and Bagley on the art.

I've been meaning to really pick those up. Any other reccomendations as far as Spidey novels are concerned???

Those are the only Spidey novels I've read.I was even skeptical when I first bought them, because I thought reading Spidey in novel form would not be as good as the comics.

Boy was I wrong.I was hooked instantly.I had to find the whole trilogy.Castro nailed every single character, and MJ was written better than she has been in years in the Spidey comics.

I really liked Spidey's description of the individual members of the Six,and how he described how dangerous each one is.

This choice is going to make me really unpopular, but I really enjoyed this:

I have no excuse except that I am a Goblinaholic. Seeing Norman suited up as the Green Goblin was a genuine thrill for me. I just knew that he was going to do some damage, and damage he did. I loved JJJ's expression as Norman came crashing through the window of the Daily Bugle. Loved it. :D

And then there is this little masterpiece:
cover.pl

If you havent read Kraven's Last Hunt, you are missing out on one of the greatest Spidey stories ever. You could feel[/img] Kraven's insanity as you read all six chapters. If you like dark, grim and gritty, this is the story for you.

I think alot of people actually like that issue Demo, Those who hate the Saga (Looks directly at Shinyle) like the fact that this is the issue that ends it. And those who like the Saga generally treat this issue as a masterpiece. Although I wished Ben didn't have to die, I can at least appreciate the way he went out

Goblins at the Gate

A nifty three parter often forgotten by most Spidey fans due to its follow ups, Gathering of Five, Final Chapter, and The Reboot. Anyway, this is the second appearance of the Roddy Kingsley Hobgoblin, since he was unmasked at the end of Hobgoblin Lives, we didn't see much of the true characterization of Kingsley. In GATG we finally see what type of human being Kingsley really is, in fact he matches up alot with Norman Osborn, albeit Kingsley is alot more rational and calmer than Osborn.

Basically Green Goblin vs Hobgoblin complete with mindgames, some very cool moments, and of course a conclusion in a burning building. Check it

Whew, thank God I'm not alone in loving PP:SM 75.

And then there is this arc. This is to Electro what KLH was to Kraven:
cover.pl

KLH showed Kraven as the psychotically determined man that would prove himself superior to Spidey at any cost. The "power up" of Electro meant that he could show the world how powerful he was. When he was defeated by Spidey, he couldnt handle it. Some might consider suicide the sign of a weakling, but Max's attempt was also a way of spitting in his enemies face.

This arc gets bashed a lot, but it is my favorite arc featuring my favorite forgotten character:

Damn I forgot about "the Shrieking". This was the best storyline to come out of the whole "I am the Spider" story when the comics became dark. Shreik is such an interesting character with so much potential and one of my favorite villains. She could have been a prime time villain especially with her powers.

Hopefully one day she comes back.

I thought I was alone in liking her and "The Shrieking".

Nope. You're not on your own there dude. I too like Shriek & "The Shrieking" is one of my favorite Spidey arcs also.

Oh, & a big thumbs up to WhatIfTales for meantioning 'Spider-Man: Blue'. Without a doubt one of the best Spider-Man storys ever, & the 1st to ever bring a tear to my eye.
If you've not read this, I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.

It hit me hard when I read this for the first time because I honestly didn't see the ending coming. It's a great story and proof that you don't need 6 freakin' issues to tell an awesome story.

This was my first comic book ever. I had it before I could even read very well. I was only about 3 or 4 years old. I actually found myself another copy of it when I was 21. I saw a picture of it in a magazine, and I recognized it and had to have it.

It's one of those few boks that lives up to the hype. It was an issue I'd waited almost 17 years to read, and it was worth it.

What...? ;)

Yeah, I loved PPSM#75. I like it for the malicious reasons you all know, but, I really just enjoyed seeing Peter in the Classic suit, whooping up on Norman. Awesome.

Unfortunately, it also meant the return of Norman Osborn....which caused alot more damage than it repaired....and I don't say that lightly.

For every "Death in the Family" of MKSM 1-12 we get, we get a Sins Past, a Sins Remembered, etc. He's behind everything. It gets ridiculous.

this is harder than expected.

ones i like have either been posted or there are great parts of actually in hindsight pretty bad comics.

SPIDEY's left me with a big FIRE HAZZARD in my room and nothing more :(

I just finished reading the Master Planner trilogy today. The first 3 part arc in ASM I might add too.
Anyway this arc was a turning point for Spidey, for several reasons.First of all he was entering a whole new era in his life-college.Where he met his soon to be room mate and best friend Harry Osborn, and a certain Miss Gwen Stacy in ASM#31.

Aunt May was stricken very ill,but this time it was not due to her weak heart. No it was due to radiation in her blood from the blood transfusion she recieved from Peter.Only Peter realises this, and wracked with guilt,he goes on a desperate hunt for the cure, enlisting the help of Dr Conners who makes his 2nd appearance since his introduction as the Lizard back in ASM#6.

And the icing on the cake is that New York is being ravaged by daring and well planned scientific robberies by a masked group of mercenaries whom are working for a mysterious employer known as The Master Planner, who has a secret under water lair at the bottom of the ocean.

Spidey's path is destined to cross the Master Planner's,whom is revealed to the readers at the beginning of ASM#32,as Doctor Octopus.Ock is planning to master all forms of radiation so he can use the knowledge and power to conquer the world, and maybe bestow himself, and others he may choose, with new powers.
An isotope known as ISO-36 is Aunt May's only salvation.Dr Conners has it shipped into New York, after Peter pawns all his scientific equipment to pay for it.However Ock also wants the isotope for his deadly experiments,so Ock's henchman snatch the isotope when it arrives at the airport.

Spidey and Dr Conners hear about the theft and Spidey goes on a fierce rampage thru the city's underworld hideouts looking for info on the Master Planner's whereabouts.
He eventually stumbles onto the Master Planner's lair. And after fiercely battling his way thru his henchman,Spidey makes it into the secret underwater lair.
However Ock is ready and waiting for Spider-Man,eagerly awaiting the opportunity to finish Spider-Man off for good.Using the ISO-36 as bait,Ock lures Spider-Man into a trap, revealing himself to Spider-Man as being the Master Planner by ensaring Spidey in his tentacles.

A fierce battle between Spidey and Ock ensues, and in the ensuing melee, one of the support beams breaks, causing the room to collapse.Ock disappears beneath the falling rubble, while Spidey becomes trapped under a large piece of metal machinery.
The ISO-36 is just ahead of him,and the lair is beginning to flood. But Spidey cannot move the machinery, and feels he's failed Aunt May,just like he did with Uncle Ben.
As the lair continues to flood,he starts thinking of Ben and May,and how much he cares for them, and how he failed Ben.He refuses to fail Aunt May as well. And summoning fierce inner strength,he lifts the machinery off him and retrieves the ISO-36.
Battling his way thru Ock's awaiting henchman outside the secret entrance to the lair,Spidey makes it back to the hospital, and Aunt May is saved.

This arc I think is right up there in the halls of fame and greatness, along with the Death of Gwen Stacy. The pain, anger, torment and ridicule Peter goes thru in this arc is astounding. He overcomes overwhelming odds and comes thru for Aunt May.
The fact that he's responsible for Aunt May's sickness, makes it even worse. And the parrallel of what happened with Ben haunts him all the way thru the ordeal. It gives him the strength to escape Ock's lair.Because he refuses to lose May because he failed to act, like he did with Ben.

And of course it was great to see Ock really show his criminal genius, having a secret under water base,a gang of highly trained mercenaries working for him,and a big sinister plan in the works.Having Aunt May put in jeopardy because of Ock's actions only made it better.Even Ock noticed how ferocious Spidey was in his fighting.

An undispusted classic :)

Bought both of these today, and it was fun to read them. Especially enjoyed the Sinister Six, even if it was a reprint, but it was like having a tradepaper back. :) John Romita's art is gorgeous in ASM 82 as always, and I just love the older writing of Stan Lee. A one-shot Electro and Spidey fight, many of the supporting cast was there, including JJJ being the one to arrange it. Enough reference to past issues that concerned Electro (no matter how cheesy "Electro...the electrician!" is in Spidey's thought bubbles, it's still a fresh recap.) that you could just jump on and enjoy it. Gwen and MJ playful-tension:

Gwen: "Remember MJ is off limits to Gwendolyn's guy."
Peter: (thinking) "I've gotta scare up some bread for Flash's party somehow." (to MJ) See you later, Lady. I have to run.
MJ: "Mmmm...I'd better check my mouth-wash."

:) Who says tension can't be done in a playful manner?

I love the first Sinister Six story. It's the first time Ock mentally calls his tentacles to him when they're removed from his body. And Aunt May doesn't even realize she's been kidnapped with Betty, because she finds Ock so charming lol :D

I remember that Electro one.Doesn't Peter go to a launderette with a paper bag over his head because he has to wash his only costume??
That issue was the 2nd time Electro appeard in ASM since his 1st appearance back in ASM#9 [not counting the ASM Annual].A pity Stan didn't use him more.
