The Avengers Greatest moment of self-sacrifice in MCU Phase One

Which is your favorite moment of self-sacrifice?

  • Iron Man flies nuke through the Chitauri portal

  • Captain America crashes HYDRA plane in the Arctic

  • Thor pleads with Loki to take his life--let Destroyer kill him--and spare Earth

  • Banner free falls from helicopter to stop Abomination, unsure of whether he'll change into Hulk

I voted Cap... It was more emotional Thor Comes in Second and IM and Banner in 3rd and fourth

I voted for Thor. I knew they'd never kill Tony off, and mainly that was to show Cap that Tony IS a Hero!

But Thor telling Loki to take his life, was not just a moment of self sacrifice, it was a defining moment for the character. He knew that he was as much to blame for what was going on, and much to blame for his arrogance causing his brother to turn against him.

Dude I thought for sure that you were going to vote for Iron Man.

At the start of Captain America when Rogers threw himself on the grenade at boot camp.
It's not as grand as the poll's examples but when I saw that in the trailer, I just knew they got that movie right.

Another fantastic miscellaneous option I didn't think of. I should have made a choice for "Other." Yeah it seems like Cap and Banner were the only ones who didnt have to learn to be heroes.

Steve's sacrifice, it's right there with Captain Kirk's fathers sacrifice in 2009 Star Trek!

That basically makes them DC characters :oldrazz:, I'm more impressed by characters that go through things to become heroes.

BAHAHA. a good point my friend. Definitely easier to relate to.

So I expected Iron Man to be winning this poll. I think its great that Thor and Cap are so neck and neck. Its unfortunate about the Hulk, but I get it. it was 4 years ago (rather than 4 - 14 months) and its the least popular MCU film.

Well the most moving character moment for Tony, wasn't the nuke. It was in the cave, where Yinsin dies and tells him not to waste his life. I guess that wasn't Tony's moment of self sacrifice, but Yinsin's, but that was the most moving moment in the Iron Man series.

yeah. but as an Iron Man fan you have to agree... Stark himself was lacking in moments of self-sacrifice right up until the final scene of his 400 minutes of film. I mean prior to that all he had was when he told Pepper to blow the roof and she says "You'll die!!!" but I happen to think he knew he'd be fine. He also had a ton of self-destructive moments but that's a little different.

aw. See that's a good point. He does sacrifice something. Obviously i was focusing mainly on the life or death ones. Very interesting choice though.

Yinsen made a great sacrifice play in Iron Man as well. Not to mention he actually died, rather than just almost dying.

All of the other sacrifices, though bold and brave, were for their respective races though. Thor's was for a race that had caused much strife and war throughout history and was the sworn enemy of Asgard, Thor's own race. And he sacrificed a life with the woman he loved to do it.

That was the biggest sacrifice to me.

yeah i pick thor. he is the only one who actually died.

This could be debated. Cap's heart was technically stopped for 70 years and he wasn't breathing. We aren't sure whether Banner actually dies before the Hulk comes out. Not trying to be argumentative, just food for thought. :)

hahaha GOT IT, the greatest self sacrifice is by the entire group!
they ALL had Shawarma! hahaha

Thor's self sacrifice, no contest. Great drama and a brilliant **** yeah moment when Thor rises his arm to catch the hammer. Cap a close second.

With Tony, I think his selfishness is exaggerated, you could always tell that behind the bravado he was a decent skin and if it came down to it, would be perfectly capable of a heroic moment.

I voted for Iron Man, although Steve jumping on the grenade was all kinds of epic.

But seriously, no option for Coulson going head-to-head with Loki?

(Actually, the winner is the nameless old guy in Germany who stands up and confronts Loki: "There are always men like you." Dude would've been toast if Cap hadn't shown up that very instant.)

Coulson would have been a good pick. Until you mentioned it, I forgot about the nameless guy in Germany but he did stand up to Loki.

Cap's was the most heart wrenching to watch because you know he'll survive but at the same time you know what he's lost in the process of his heroic self sacrifice..

I should definitely make a phase 1 secondary sacrifice thread

Yinsen gives Tony Stark time to escape in Iron Man
Coulson confronts Loki on the Helicarrier in The Avengers
"nameless old man" stands up to Loki in Germany

Thor destroys Bifrost to save Jotunheim
skinny Steve Rogers jumps on dummy grenade

Yeah, I mean. We know they were all gonna survive. Stark was already on for IM3... its more about the concept of what they were thinking at the time. Picture each of their girl's faces during each moment.

"You don't even know if you'll change!"

Based on this, cap wins haha

Agreed. That one got my vote.

Me too

yeah i pick thor. he is the only one who actually died.

HAHAHAHAHHA

All the selections are brave and epic. Hard to pick from them all, but in the end went with Tony.

I voted for Thor pleads with Loki to take his life--let Destroyer kill him--and spare Earth, because Thor is my favorite!

Yeah I'd have to go with Thor too, for the reason he IS the only one who actually died.
