Green Lantern reboot ideas.

In my new vid, I talked about directors that I'd like to see direct a Flash/GL team up movie. To reiterate some points, Kosinski is my favorite of the bunch, since his whole Tron aesthetic could translate really well to both powersets.

Other names I threw around were Doug Liman, Shawn Levy (now that he's got Real Steel under his belt), Louis Leterrier, and DJ Caruso.

Kosinski is a phenomenal idea. The other ideas don't blow me away. nothing Liman, Levy, Leterrier and Caruso's visual styles have never impressed me. Tron 2 and Oblivion had insanely well done visuals. A director with a knack for visuals is absolutely necessary for a movie about two visual icons, Green Lantern and The Flash.

Personally I would want a Brave and the Bold movie after 1 more solo GL movie and a solo Flash movie. Kosinski would be great for solo GL. But for a solo Flash movie, I see Rian Johnson doing an awesome job.

Add me to that. I just had the image/audio of Kilowog saying, "Today is da wurst day or your miserable lives, poozas. I'm going to break ya wills, Gardna and Rayna. You'll be wurdy of the Co-wa when I'm troo wit you."

the scene is Oa, Kilowog has just beaten the crap out of Guy Gardner,
for any of the usual reasons, he turns to leave, while Gardner lies
in a heap.

Gardner pulls him self up to his knees "Where...where ya goin, I ain't done with ya yet." but is too messed up to stand.

Kilowog looks over his shoulder dismissively
"Don't worry pooza......I'LL BE BACK !"

audience roars with laughter, billions of dollars in the bank, GL film a big
success.

Fair point, you'd have to say Hellboy was more fantasy/superhero,
whereas Pacific Rim is sci-fi/Godzilla.

Still, IMO that gives him more cred with similar material than Besson,
particularly with GL.

Having said that, 5th elephant is pretty much straight sci-fi (action/comedy) so in a purer sense, I suppose you're right.

However, while it was fun I don't think 5th was handled anywhere near
as well as Del Toro handled his films - and his visual style would lend
itself well to a GL universe, populated with strange creatures and exotic locations.

Again, just IMO, but I still think Besson wouldn't be the optimal choice,
compared to Del Toro or Kozinski.
But Besson has a knack for the visuals too. Not only when it comes to sci fi. He's also been around for "ages" and is a very experienced filmmaker.
Del Toro suits the darker elements more. He's planning a JLD and I believe it fits him way more than GL.

Zack Snyder on Superman
Ben Affleck on Batman
Guillermo Del Toro on Wonder Woman
Rian Johnson on The Flash
Joseph Kosinski on Green Lantern

Del Toro's doing Justice League Dark at the moment. Here are my choices:
Zack Snyder on Superman.
Ben Affleck on Batman.
Alfonso Cuaron on Wonder Woman.
Brad Bird on Flash.
Alex Proyas on Green Lantern.

I would love to see a very organic Green Lantern film. CGI should only be used when necessary. No CGI Suit! That was painful to look at in the last film. When I think of the film, I imagine something along the lines of Aliens, Mass Effect, and Halo. Not too serious but not too comedic either. This would in not be a sequel or an origin, but a new story that starts right before the chaos and waists no time getting to the action.

It would start with Hal, a few years into the corps, training with a new member to go on a mission. Through the film, Hal will tell him/her about himself, his time on earth and other missions being shown in flash backs. Very early into the film, Hal leads his team and finds out that the mission was a trap all along. Sinestro, presumed dead, wields the yellow power ring and declares war on the Green Lanterns for setting him up to die and revenge on Hal for supposedly leaving him to die. Hal must find the traitor/traitors in the corps and stop Sinestro from completing his plot of devastation.

I'd love to see references to other lantern corps and cameos as well, like St. Walker and Atrocitus. I wouldn't want it to be a busy film. That's a continuous mistake in some movies, especially sequels. More isn't always better, it's just more.

Nice ideas dude.

I really think the next Green Lantern director needs to take a look at Empire Strikes Back, Alien, Aliens, Halo, and Prometheus for inspiration visual and tonally.

In the next movie, the focus should be on both Hal and John. This would technically be John Stewart's origin but he wouldn't be the main character. I would start the film shortly before John Stewart is chosen as a Green Lantern. There would be a few very quick scenes on Earth establishing Stewart's life, as a former Marine turned architect from Detroit. The Guardians would decide that sector 2814 would need a backup Lantern because they sense an unusually large amount of evil energy on Earth. Hal, as cocky as he is, would feel some resentment towards Stewart as he feels he can handle his sector on his own. For much of the movie, Hal and John don't get along and begrudgingly work together, but of course, by the end of the film, they've both proven themselves to one another and become close friends. Yay.

I'd make Sinestro the main baddie of the movie. It'd be such a tease if we didn't get Sinestro as the main baddie after having to deal with the terrible villains of the last movie. But I also think Atrocitus (pre Red Lantern) as a secondary threat would be awesome to see on film. That's where they could take some influence from the way the enemies are handled in Alien and Prometheus. Atrocitus is a chance for WB to make a character that is truly terrifying. I'd like it if they make him as ambiguous and scary as they can for this first film, and establish his anti-hero aspects (along with his Red Lantern destiny) in later films.

I see Green Lantern as an epic trilogy. The end goal would be to establish all the different Lantern Corps so they could ultimately lead into an abridged version of Blackest Night. The first movie would sow the seeds of a prophecy, but mostly leaving explanation for later movies. The first movie would only establish the Green and Yellow Lantern corps. It'd basically be a streamlined version of Sinestro Corps War with John and Hal as the main characters.

A second movie would introduce Saint Walker, Larfleeze, the Red Lanterns, and the Star Sapphire
A third would have all the corps teaming up to defeat William Hand, Black Lanterns, and Nekron

Agreed. Even with the fewest films under his belt, Kosinski is the only one that really fills out WB's whole "visionary" template that they keep trying to attach to these films.

If WB wants a Green Lantern movie that's visually grounded in reality, but still very sci-fi, then Neil Blomkamp is the best option for sure. Kosinski is perfect for a more out there sci-fi experience

Neil Blomkamppp all the way.

Star Wars, Star Trek, and GoTG all have the swashbuckling space adventure thing. I wonder if GL would get lost in the mix if it tried the same tone.

Blomkamp's done movies on racism and economic inequality, and perhaps 'war/soldiers' can be his next topic for "The Green Lantern Corps". Putting more of an emphasis on the social commentary give this movie more of a "raison d'etre", so to speak.

(Blomkamp himself might be a pipe dream though. He said he's only really interested in his own original ideas).

Isn't Blomkamp doing a Halo pilot though?

Wonder Woman: Guillermo Del Toro
The Flash: Rian Johnson
Green Lantern: Neil Blomkamp

He fits perfectly with the aesthetic set up by Nolan and adopted by Snyder. If hard scifi like GL is to work in MOS universe, Blomkamp is the man to make it happen.

Sharlto Copley for Sinestro.

Ooh really? Then there's still hope!

2018 Superman: The Man of Tomorrow (Bird), Wonder Woman (Del Toro)
2019 Batman: The Caped Crusader (Affleck), The Flash (Kosinki)
2020 Aquaman: The King of Atlantis (Duncan Jones), Green Lantern Corps (Blomkamp)
2021 Justice League: Tower of Babel (Snyder)

2022 SHAZAM (Rian Johnson), Wonder Woman & The First Born (Wyatt)
2023 Batman: in Arkham (Fincher), Flash to the Future (Zemeckis)
2024 Aquaman: The Seven Seas (Peter Jackson), In Blackest Night (Cauron's return to space)
2025 Justice League: The New Gods (Snyder)

A man can dream.

(Also, Sharlto Copley for Larfleeze)

Hmmmm, agree to disagree on Blomkamp, still think Del Toro or Kosinski would be the optimum choice, particularly on the basis of visuals.

Blomkamp's are more subtle, not so much epic, but both Del Toro and Kosinski are probably more suited to creating the kind of sweeping scenery and epic settings that GL deserves. Elysium looked great, but Kosinski's Oblivion was staggering (visually anyway).

I'm not saying that Blomkamp couldn't do it, and tonally he has something in common with the Nolan aesthetic, (not so sure about Snyder's palette, have to think about that one) but that Del Toro and Kosinski would be better.

I suppose Blomkamp would have to develop a real affection for the subject material, (I think Pacific Rim worked so well because Del Toro was in love with it).

Kosinski's work on Tron Legacy was impressive, both in terms of visuals and action - it's story and tone that let that film down, but for those of you who didn't like it, it actually grows on you after a while, I hated it in the cinema, but after repeated viewings on DVD the good bits (particularly the religious themes start to come out).

Del Toro, is a master of strange creatures, and setttings, and with Pacific Rim, some pretty kick ass action (Hellboy never did it for me).

But hey, if Blomkamp ends up with the job, and does GL proud I won't be complaining.

(in my dreams, it would still be James Cameron, now he could really do GL justice)

The thing is, no matter who the director is, the film needs a solid script and good casting to make it work. In fact, really casting the right lead would be crucial, it's got to be a likeable GL that the audience can get behind (although IMO I reckon a team of GL's is the way to go)
whether its the Rock as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan (again, probably dreaming here), maybe James Franco or Kevin Zegers as Kyle Rayner and .....I'll do you one better for Sharlto Copely, Copely as Guy Gardner ! His performance as HM Murdoch was the best thing in the A team film, and he could definitely pull off Gardner's attitude and clownish sense of humour. Now put all those guys together and you're going to get a kick-ass film.

IMO Mark Strong as Sinestro ( if not him, then Robert Knepper or Hugo Weaving )

I don't want to see Sinestro as the villain in the first movie. His whole descent into villainy was one of the most interesting in comics, and the first film mangled it badly. I'd like to see Sinestro be good in the first movie, but his disagreements with the Guardians and their methods get wider as the movie goes along. Then, in the second movie, he finally says "screw it, I'm doing things my way," finds the Yellow battery, and falls into villainy, but complex villainy. As for the first movie, I'd use the Manhunters as the villains there.

True, I would like that too. but at this point, there isn't a good chance of a reboot, let alone a sequel to said reboot. I think it's best for them to use their best villain right away this time around. i like the idea of introducing Sinestro as a sympathetic villain in movie 1, and by movie 3, Sinestro is fighting alongside the GL's and other Lantern corps against the Black Lanterns.

i think it should be about a none lantern villain....maybe Anti monitor or Mongul and his war world

Or something new like maybe a couple of lanterns Hal / john / sinestro / killawog to help with some Thanagarian politics and then boom full on Thanagarian civil war with the lanterns in the middle

Or involve the Reach.

Jake Gyllenhaal for GL if they want someone high profile.

Agreed. He's such a good choice for Hal.

If they decide to get a big name for John Stewart and a smaller name for Hal, I suggest Karl Urban or Jensen Ackles

Rather Urban then :)

If an indie actor should be chosen for Kyle or Hal, I suggest Zegers

Not a bad idea, he was suggested a lot for Nightwing around here years ago.

I could see Steven Strait as Kyle, he looks a lot like him. Rayner is supposed to look half hispanic.

Idris Elba or Dwayne Johnson as John Stewart
Jake Gyllenhaal, Jensen Ackles or Karl Urban as Hal Jordan
Jesse Plemons as Guy Gardner
Steven Strait as Kyle Rayner

Agreed about the suit. I think a practical suit with CGI enhancements sprinkled (lightly) would do nicely. Isn't that what they did with the first Iron Man movie? And obviously Iron Patriot in IM3. It's beyond me why they didn't think to try that for GL 2011.

I also want Hal, and I absolutely agree about starting off a few years in! 1) We just got that in 2011. People groan and complain about the Superman origin retelling that hasn't been done on screen in a while and he was well received beforehand. Can't imagine what that would mean for GL. 2) Origin superhero movies seem to be getting tiresome in general. I think WB has this in mind in their handling of WW which makes me more open to her appearance in BvS. They're going to put her smack-dab in the middle of this movie and lead into Justice League (where the audience will see her again). Only after THAT will we likely see a solo Wondy movie. And what will it be about? Probably not the origin. People will have enough exposure to her by then to just roll with whatever story is put in front of them. This is actually pretty smart when you think about it.

They could even treat the new GL movie like a spiritual successor to 2011. The teaser at the end of that movie was one of the coolest parts about it. Piggybacking off of that would be perfection!

I don't think the other Corps should be brought in or cameoed in the first movie though. Keep it focused Green vs. Yellow. Maybe the conflict can spread to Red/Blue in the second movie and conclude with Black in the third and the other colors having small roles there. But trying to move the emotional spectrum too fast in the movie lore could drive people away.

All great suggestions.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Hal = Karl Urban (or Nathan Fillion)

John = ideally Idris Elba, but looking at current trends, the Rock

Guy Gardner = Jensen Ackles (come on, he's just Dean Winchester with a power ring) or in the alternative, Sharlto Copely

Kyle = somebody up and coming, maybe Dave Franco

Kilowog = motion capture and voice by Arnold Schwarzenegger

Sinestro = bring back Mark Strong
( maybe Jason Isaacs if Strong's not keen)

with a team like that, how could you help but not have a highly entertaining film, so long as you get one of the amazing directors we've mentioned?.

cheers :hal:

Apparently The Rock posted up a picture on Instagram with Hiriam Garcia, with the tweet, #JohnStewartCanStilWhupSupermansAss.

I think it's officially settled, Rock is John Stewart. Prepare yourselves for the smooth-talking, charismatic, ass-kicking Green Lantern.

If it's true?

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss.

(Would have prefered Ejiofor, but that was definitely a pipedream).

Still. The Rock?! Yesssssssssssssssssssssss.

Also, John Stewart? Yesssssssssssssssssss

(and while I don't really care if they connect the TV shows with the movies, pairing little fanboy Gustin with The Rock would be hilarious).

Ditto! Wasn't my first choice for John, but if they do this &do it right it'll be really awesome. It's pretty much guaranteed to be better than what we got last time. It's gonna be a loooong wait tho
