No matter what, I just hope they stick to a lot of practical effects and puppetry for Gizmo and the Gremlins.

Asked how he would approach the sequel in light of those changes, Columbus was clear that the mischievous monsters themselves remain the heart of the series. “Gremlins exists without actors, it’s about puppets,” he said. “For me it’s going be very difficult to work with puppets again after working with such great actors.”
And despite advances in technology, Columbus said fans can rest assured the mischievous mogwai won’t be CGI creations: “No, we would do practical puppets, yeah.”

He might be retired from directing but I'd be shocked if he's not involved with this in some kind of producing role.No Joe Dante though?
He was a consulting producer on that Secrets of the Mogwai Gizmo animated series so I'm sure he'd at the very least have a similar title in this. As long as Dante is willing, I can't imagine they wouldn't ask him to be involved. No Joe Dante really hinders my hype here
I get it, but Columbus also wrote the original script for Gremlins so I think we're still in good hands. They could very well have asked Dante if he was interested in directing this and he turned it down. There's no official word but given that he hasn't directed a movie in over a decade and he's pushing 80, he could be retired from directing too.Involved is one thing, but those movies are great cause of Dante's quirky humor. Especially Gremlins 2 in that regard. So you're missing that without him being the storyteller. James Cameron was involved in Terminator Dark Fate. That movie was garbage. So involved doesn't necessarily mean much
He probably is retired and that's fine. But his lack of being in that chair keeps me at a distance from this project until we see how it turns out.
