Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians Of The Galaxy- User Review Thread. SPOILERS!

I don't think they broke the cookie cutter mold with this one, but its about as close as they are going to get. ASM2 was much better for me, Spider-Who, I agree with most of your points, though I like Batista a bit more.

I give it a 7/10. It was alot of fun watching it, but now… I'm forgetting all about it almost instantly lol. I will say its their best film since Avengers.

Will I buy the blu ray? If it has very cool packaging. Not sure what that says about the movie. *shrug*

I can't really say much more about it, as I'm not over the moon with or super enthusiastic enough to write about it. its just a 7 movie for me. Also My girlfriend... she says 7.5 because she loves Sci Fi space movie stuff lol.
Well, it's still very much a marvel movie, but up until this one, every marvel film has looked and felt the same with little risk or branching out...they've played every movie extremely safe and family friendly. This movie took a step away from that and sought to be its own thing with only just enough of that Marvel quality to keep it connected. While this movie has a lot of laughs, it is also far darker and cruder than any other MCU film.

On a side note, a lot of the film felt rushed or at least cut. I feel like the movie should have been a little longer.

I agree with numbers 3 and 4 complaints (I gave it an 8.5/10) but not with numbers 1 and 2. Especially number 1. Drax is the man. Admit it.
Well, I liked the character of Drax and what they were trying to do with the character, but Batista's execution left a lot to be desired for me. There are good ways and bad ways to play an overly serious/stoic character. I just didn't buy Batista's take at all. Also, for someone who is called "The Destroyer", he got his ass handed to him a LOT, lol.

Marvel did it. They finally broke the cookie-cutter mold all their movies thus far have used and took a big risk making this movie. It paid off. This is Marvel's best film so far and it's been a long while since I've had so much fun at the movies. Only thing that comes close is ASM2 for me.

Since there's so much I loved about the movie, I'll keep it short and list what I didn't like or felt could have been improved.

1) Drax. Good lord was Batista bad. He had good presence but it sounded like he struggled through every single line, and no it had nothing to do with his "character". It was painful. I really hope he gets some acting classes before GotG2.

2) There were several times where otherwise solid acting of others fell into painfuly wooden performances, but I think that's more a problem with the script writing, many of the dramatic scenes had clumsy dialogue that tried too hard to be serious and/or technical, which is sad/surprising since when the dialogue was good, it was DAMN good. There just didn't seem to be any middle ground.

3) Thanos. Everything about him was disappointing. I didn't like the acting/voice and his cgi model looked unfinished and boring overall. Also, if he's supposed to be this "ultimate villain/end boss" of the MCU, this movie failed to make me think that. He came across as a chump.

4) The planet they were trying to save was completely under-developed. They just didn't make me care about that plot point/place/characters at all, so any drama and tension the movie was calling for was SEVERELY hindered.

That's pretty much it. Despite these faults, I really enjoyed the movie. Visuals, set and costume design, and characters were top notch. Rocket and Groot were my favorite. Loved their dynamic. It also had some unexpected punches to the gut - I actually got choked up twice.

9/10 for me.

Gotta disagree about Bautista, he emerged as my favorite character. He killed the comedy and he sold the emotions. I loved him.

Thanos was too generic looking and they need to mix in practical effects, I think. I much preferred how he looked in 'Avengers'. I HATE how cgi artists render all the main characters more 'human' and 'proportioned' looking. CGI hulk was always too inoffensive and almost handsome-- at least in 'Avengers' he finally looked more apelike and brutish, and it was a huge improvement. Thanos should look more alien and scary than he did in 'Guardians'.

Just got back.

First half had me worried I would be very disappointed. The backstories for various characters felt like they were summed up with a couple of lines of dialog each. Hard to get into them. Some of the acting felt terrible too. And I didn't like the writing of the dialog very much.

But then it started picking up steam and by the end I was really enjoying the crap out of the movie.

Interesting...I know it's flawed...but I don't mind one bit. Bautista was horrible...but you know what?....it worked. Once I got used to him, his "acting" felt perfect. (Kinda like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix) That must by why they cast him. Saldana also struggled at times...but she was ultimately ok...and she looks great even in green. :woot: Pratt is just likable to me. Was worried going in that I would not be able to forget "Bradley Cooper"...but it never entered my mind...thumbs up to him.

Once I got the characters in my head, I really got attached to them. Especially Groot and Rocket. Some really touching moments provided by those two. I don't want to hear anyone claim the Hulk can't be done properly in a Hulk movie (i.e. not a guest star in a Banner movie) because it costs too much or "the audience can't handle him talking" ever again after seeing this and Planet of the Apes. CGI has arrived folks.

The visuals are stunning. Gorgeous to look at...both CGI and makeup. Loved the look of Thanos, Nebula, and Ronan.

Some issues with "too much going on at once" in some of the aerial battles at the end...but that kinda makes me want to see it again to catch what I missed. Not the same feel I got from the Star Wars Prequels where I had no desire to see that mess again.

The post credit scene adds nothing...but it made me smile for sure.

8.5/10 for now....but I admit I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm surprised at how much I liked Drax and Groot. I was upset at Ronan dying since he eventually redeems himself in the comics.

On a side note, a lot of the film felt rushed or at least cut. I feel like the movie should have been a little longer.
Same feeling here. Especially the first half for me. A lot of the setup stuff felt rushed.

I really came to enjoy him by the end. Him not understanding metaphors cracked me up.

And his early scenes mopping up the floor with everyone (including Gamora) were very impressive. It really helped me understand how powerful Ronan was. ...And in turn Ronan's reluctant subservient attitude toward Thanos really helped me get just how powerful Thanos is. Thanos...is going to be tough to beat.

I gave a rare 10/10. My face hurt from smiling and laughing so much. This film reminded me why I go to the movies and I will definitely be seeing it again this weekend.

I'll round this out to a 10. Movie friggen rocked and was one of the best times I've had at the flicks!

As I said in another thread, the representation of the villains was my only disappointment. Not that they were horrible in any way. But definitely could have been handled better.[BLACKOUT] I'll be really disappointed if that was the last time we see Ronan. Desereves a much bigger role in things here. [/BLACKOUT] Especially since this is just getting started. Everything else...Perfect!

I loved the hell out of this movie. The most fun I've had at a Marvel film since The Avengers. I'd rank it in the top 3 MCU films with Avengers and Cap 2. I was thoroughly impressed at how good it turned out to be. Each of the main characters was awesome, so much so that nobody really stole the show and they played off each other really well. The soundtrack was incredible, but we knew it would be going in.

I'm already planning on seeing it again tomorrow to catch the stuff I missed the first time, like Nathan Fillion and Rob Zombie's cameos.

Yea me and my other half are seeing this tomorrow. Then food and some drink after. Saturday will be a good day :)

Not sure when I'll have time to see it again but I hope it's soon. I really think I need a second viewing to get a good grasp on everything I watched; the characterization was top notch, and I want to watch it again and see the journey each character went through.

Yea i think this film will re-ward repeat viewings. There is so much to take in visually and character wise.

I've found that when I see movies more than twice in theaters it sort of wears down my enjoyment for them later when I buy them on blu-ray. In a lot of ways I prefer watching films on my own TV as opposed to a theater, so I'm probably going to watch it one more time while it's still on the big screen so I won't spoil myself for when it finally comes out.
I saw the Avengers 5 times in theaters, and while I still love the movie I didn't leave anything to really savor and enjoy later haha. As you said there is so much here to take in, so I'm looking forward to repeat viewings.

10/10 and the best movie of the summer by far, it isn't even close.

This movie has everything you could possibly want in a summer movie. It's got a Spielberg fun quality to it, and the visuals are out of this world.

The whole cast are standouts, and thank goodness Bautista was cast in the role, because there's no way Jason Momoa could have pulled off a heartening performance like that as Drax.

Bradley Cooper, you can't say enough things. Rocket steals the show, everyone is going to love him.

And Vin Diesel deserves some new special acadamy award for best voice actor with fewest words of dialogue. His voice combined with the great CGI work, bring his character to life.

I'm not sure about this film because it's so new, but I think when the second one rolls around Marvel will have a 3rd billion dollar franchise on it's roster!

OK, seen the movie at an advanced screening. Here are my thoughts.

GOTG is what Indiana Jones and Star Wars wants to be!

The plot does not exactly follow the normal action movie plot. It's a bit insane.

Here's what I really want to talk about. This movie has got HEART. It is undoubtedly the best movie in terms of character writing. Every member of the team has a shattered past. Gunn really dive into each member's past and the reason why they are here saving the galaxy.

What I didn't much like about the Avengers was that the movie did not really talk about the why they want to fight Loki. Not need, but want.

Whedon knows how to write great dialogues but I think Marvel should hire Gunn to oversee character development.

Cap 2 did a good job of handling characters, but this takes it up another notch.

Gunn really outdid himself here in terms of characters. Star-Lord misses his mum. Gamora had seen what Thanos had done and wants no part of it. Drax had his family killed by Thanos. Rocket is a angry and pitiful creature. My heart broke when I saw him naked. Groot is a lonely but caring soul who is following his best bud. Everyone has a reason why they are on the team.

The character moments are great. Many people may have missed it, but the moments where Groot said ''We are Groot'' and Drax consoling Rocket was the most powerful moments for me. I was expecting a lot of fun, but it was the heart that sold me.

Yondu was great. I needed to see more Ronan and Nebula. Didn't really like how Ronan ended.

The end credit didn't do anything for me. Pretty lame.

On a side note, I wish Fox would take a note of GOTG and stop killing X-Men characters for the sake of it. Develop the characters well instead of wasting it.

4.5/5

I hear ya there.

Pretty amazing how well done and cared for all the GOTG were. It's really what matters the most.

In a comic book movie, characters are the most important.

Giving characters stereotypes aren't building character. I'm talking about you Michael Bay. Does it occur to anyone of you that when you watch a Transformers movie, you don't give a crap about the characters?

I just got back from watching it, and hoo ahh!, it was damn good. Marvel did it again!

I threw together a spoiler free review for those interested:

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Director: James Gunn
Writer: James Gunn, Nicole Perlman
Running Time: 122 minutes
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% at 127 reviews and counting
Staaring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Batista, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Cooper, vin Diesel

Guardians of the Galaxy (hereafter GoTG) is the 10th movie from Marvel Studios all of which have taken place in the same cinematic universe, though this is the first movie in which we barely see Earth. This movie follows up on events which took place in The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World, with the evil warlord Thanos tasking his servant Ronan the Accuser (of the Kree species) with acquiring an infinity stone, the purple-coloured one, to go along with the red-coloured mist we saw in Thor: The Dark World and the blue Tesseract we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger and in The Avengers (that makes 3 of the 6 stones, for those keeping track).

The purple infinity stone operates as a McGuffin to guide the plot. The team of heroes of Peter Quill (human), Gamorah (alien who looks almost human), Groot (the tree), Rocket (the racoon), and Drax (Batista) are brought together by various bounties seeking to acquire the stone, though Quill found it first which is what sets the plot in motion. Ronan the accuser, who is alien-loooking with blue skin, upon acquiring the infinity stone about halfway through the movie, renounces the authority of Thanos and sets out to the planet Xandar, populated by people physically indistinguishable from humans, who are the good guys.

What GoTG converges to is a very generic adventure story bursting at the seams with pop-culture references, though it accomplishes that task reasonably well. It's a fun dumb moment, like Pacific Rim, though I have a hard time loving these when there isn't much originality. Karen Gillan's evil and alien-looking character Nebula is in the movie only as a foil to Zoe Saldana's good and human-looking Gamorah, she has no other purpose. Groot and Rocket are there to provide jokes, though a few of those are very funny. Gamorah is the evil woman turned good who is defined by her martial arts skills and her victimhood as a child. Peter Quill is the white male lead who brings everyone together under his charismatic leadership, saves the day, gets the girl at the end, and whose life story is motivated by the loss of a parent when he was small. We've seen most of this before.

Among what we've seen before are the Star Wars references. There are a lot in this movie:
- The tree Groot is nominally incomprehensible, though Rocket understands him well and figures out exactly what he wants to say, which is played like how Han Solo understand Chewbacca ;
- When Thanos appears on a screen to Ronan, it is an identical scene to how the Emperor first appeared to Vader in The Empire Strikes Back ;
- At least two asteroid belts, presented in the same manner as seen in The Empire Strikes Back, which is the movie that popularised that style of asteroid belts in fiction ;
- When Quill almost shoots Ronan in an attempt to kill him near the end, they play a musical theme that sounds like the one when Luke was trying to fire the torpedo down the Death Star in A New Hope ;
- When Rocket Racoon subsequently shows up and shoots with his ship to save the day, it's identical to how Han Solo showed up with the Millennium Falcon to shoot Darth Vader's Tie Fighter at the end of A New Hope ;

All of these references end up being distracting, because it hits at me, "James Gunn loves Star Wars", I get it, I'm not sure that's a good idea. A few references would be enough. There are also references to other movies.

Aside from that, the movie is hurt by being too loud, trying to force emotions with theme music as an alternative to good writing, too many CGI action scenes, weak villains, and a loud climax that is hard to follow and full of cross-cuts between the actions of the different characters. To continue on the Star Wars analogy preferred by GoTG director James Gunn, Red Letter Media once pointed out that A New Hope had 1 climax sequence, The Empire Strikes Back had 2, The Return of the Jedi had 3, and The Phantom Menace has 4. Within the climax of GoTG, we have the actions of Peter and company chasing Ronan, Gamorah fighting Nebula, the fighters navigating an air battle, the ground command of Xandar, that of Rocket Racoon, and that of the bounty hunters, so it's a climax sequence divided into ***SIX*** parallel narrative subcomponents, that's pretty bad.

There were several pluses. As said before, a lot of funny jokes. The bonding between the characters is mostly earned. The colour scheme for the movie is consistent so it doesn't hurt the eyes in spite of being CGI. There's a more competent expansion of the mythology than we saw in Thor: The Dark World. Hearing a lot of those old songs was great ... "Cherry Bomb" from The Runaways in a superhero movie? Wow, that was great.

GoTG effectively incorporates story beats we've seen before, but doesnt create many new ones other than the fun time in the collector's lab. GoTG has both dull and fun moments. The jokes are plentiful, funnier than those in Thor: The Dark World but not as funny as those in The Winter Soldier or The Avengers. It's worth seeing once, if you're not otherwise busy. The CGI is good for what it is.

Overall, GoTG is competent, but not inspired.

Grade: B

saw it yesterday. cant say much in terms of review other than this-- this is AVENGERS level cinematic experience. yes its that good. #SolidGold.

among the many things that this film excelled in i must single out the soundtrack. unlike many movies that add cool songs to embody the feeling of the moments, GOTG incorporates this fantastic playlist into the narrative. so the music has purpose even within the story. not only that, but its like another character that ties Star-Lord to his humanity. that despite all these fantastic images and sounds thats out of this world, the music is clearly an Earth thing. and proudly so.

the only complaints i have if anything was the very first scene and the very last scenes (funnily just in the shadow of the Marvel logo appearances). tucking them in spoiler just in case:

the "prologue" for lack of a better word, just plopped in without much fanfare and immediately after the string of trailers (at least in my theater), so we were all thinking this heartbreaking scene between boy and mother was some kind of trailer thats dragging for too long. then the Marvel logo appears. that was part of the movie what?? sheesh. can we have a rewind?

the "epilogue" or the much beloved bonus end credits that geeks sit out for.... Howard the Duck. wtf? hey im an 80's kid so i remember this weird Big Bird distant relative (no i dont know the real backstory and frankly i dont care for it much). but yeah that kinda fell flat. sure its nice to see The Collector having a drink amidst the ruins of his once glorious treasury, indicating we could see him again in future Marvel movies, and even adding Cosmo the Dog was a nice touch (even if general public doesnt know his significance) but then they had to tack on Howard the Duck at the end that just killed the moment. and i am suddenly reminded why i despised his movie.

so yeah other than those two things (incredibly minor, given the spectacle between them) this movie is just perfect. sure they dont have as much memorable quotes as Avengers did (Whedon is a league of his own people. lets just accept that), but the music makes up for that. GOTG is enjoyable and entertaining and heartfelt without making viewers like me park my brain at the door. GOTG cast and crew genuinely deserves all the awards. totally worth the price of the ticket (even more so).

For those of you who have seen it, do you think it's appropriate to take young kids to see GOTG? I heard the language may be saltiest than other Marvel movies, but before I take my kids to see this movie I have to find out more about it.

it depends on the sensibilities of your kids. some are pretty hardy, others are squeamish. thats up to you to gauge whats best. but yeah i dont think theres anything here that will give them nightmares. if youre worried about the language, i think the only time a parent would worry is if they have kids that are pretty astute with words. most kids will be so amazed with the visuals the dialogue usually goes over their head (i know this is true for many adults as well ;))

Just going to rehash this since I put it in wrong place..

I loved this movie....soooo sooooooo much, I understand now why the tag line was "you're welcome"

Thank you James Gunn, Kevin Feige, everyone involved! So happy right now, reviews don't mean anything to me anymore.

But I'm happy it is back to 90% +

10/10 from me.
