Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

They're gonna include the songs, they're too ****ing timeless. A Friend Like Me and A Whole New World will never be omitted.

I'm glad they didn't whitewash the leads unlike some other films.

oh, and is this supposed to be a musical like Beauty and Beast?

do we know if Aladdin and Jasmine actors have musical backgrounds?

Naomi Scott was a singer before an actress

Just dub the songs if they can't sing. I don't understand this recent trend of ruining songs with bad voices just so you can say actor x did their own singing in the movie.

Or just cast actors who can sing. It's not hard.

Brown people are not interchangable. Jasmine is an icon for Middle Eastern representation. Why shouldn't people critique the movie for casting someone not from the Middle East.

Agrabah is a hybrid of India and the middle East according to word of God from Disney. So I don't know what to tell you.

Just a hunch but I bet if Naomi had darker skin and a more ethnic look, there wouldn't have been a problem. In fact I bet some people were mad as soon as they read the name "naomi scott" not knowing who she is and assuming things immediately.

"Now that's just [stereo]typical" :mnm:

If a movie starts with a song called Arabian Nights, I kinda expect it to be set in the Middle East. Intentionally or accidentally combining the Middle East and India sounds like an orientalist mistake that this updated 2018 movie shouldn't make.

The Middle East is home to many different races. However, casting Naomi Scott is part of a larger Hollywood trend of casting as light an actor as possible. I doubt casting a darker brown woman from Iraq, for example, was ever an option for this movie. How many opportunities does someone like that get to play a princess in a Disney movie?

We have come to the point where POC are criticized and hated for accepting big Hollywood roles. Its bad enough that they struggle to get big roles, but when they do they get backlash for not being accurate enough. Its beyond silly.

I imagine if Jessica Henwick or Oscar Isaac were to be cast as Mulan and Zorro, they would get similar backlash. Its getting a bit over the top now.

i agree. i bet the actor who plays the villain will have darker skin. if not real skin they will give him make up to look darker. :woot:

Grace Randolph said Disney should have Scott's soccer player husband accompany her to red carpet events because he is black

She thinks that will somehow lesson the controversy
No one cares when this dude plays every race ever

Mark Strong has also played a variety of races and nationalities without any criticism. He has played a couple Arab characters.

People probably care more about Aladdin because it isn't the typical negative terrorist/stereotypical role, but a rare lead role for a person of middle eastern descent. Based on a super popular animated movie. Similar to how people wanted an actual Native American to play Tonto instead of Johnny Depp. That guy in the pic above plays a supporting character 9 times out of 10. Hell NotSoLongAgo didn't even bother to type his name...

And he was also in Bubble Boy. Which says a lot about where he is now.

Who here hates Naomi Scott? I sure don't. I wish her luck in the role. An actor has to act. I hate these stupid movie studios that only give certain people chances.

The imagery in the Disney movie had quite a few Indian elements. The vague Taj Mahal like building the more Indian styled Turban of the king.

Also there are arabs as light or even lighter than Scott. Arab doesn't equate to dark skin, especially over someone half-indian.

I dont mind Naomi Scott at all, shes got the right kind of innocent yet seductive beauty that jasmine has. I dont get the hate, it's very inconsistent, what about when Al Pacino played a Cuban Druglord and spoke the whole movie with an exaggerated accent? What about all those non middle eastern actors/actresses who are hired to play these characters at disneyland?

I know... I even said that in my post. My point was that they should have given the role to a darker arab woman of colour since Jasmine is the opportunity for them to get a role in a Disney-live-action movie. But Hollywood consistently uses this "well there are white people in the region" as an excuse to hire as light as possible.

Does a studio have a moral duty "give" a role to someone based on skin color or should it be earned by someone deserving of the role?

I doubt Scott was cast simply because she is lighter skinned. Do you have an example of a darker skinned arab actress with a similar pedigree to Scott?
