Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Artemis Fowl says hello.

Though it probably will suffer the same fate at the box office as Wrinkle in Time.

I have such high hopes for this if Butler doesn't fight the troll in the suit of armour we riot :funny:

Yea, the A Wrinkle In Time movie was pretty much just.....a wrinkle in time.

2019 is going to be absolutely insane for Disney. The live-action department is releasing Dumbo, Aladdin, Lion King, Maleficent 2 and Artemis Fowl. Lucasfilm is dropping Episode 9 while Marvel has Endgame. The animated side and Pixar have Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4. Then you have Disney+ coming out later this year. Absolutely phenomenal. This should be a year to remember.

Disney be like....

Good for them, but I am looking forward to the cinematic and theatrical experiences.

They are definitely going into overtime making sure the effects look good.

Well based on the effects in the last trailer they have some work to do.

I don't understand how Disney can think it is wise to release so many tentpoles in a single year. There is going to be serious self-cannibalism. If they saved their weaker releases like Aladdin and such for 2020, they might have a shot even if they get a lukewarm critical reception. People will go see them for curiousity in a less packed year. But if you have also got Avengers: Endgame and Lion King in theatres at the same time, who wants to go see Aladdin?

Despite the genie controversy and other concerns surrounding the film's development, I actually think Aladdin will end up doing very well in the BO. It's Dumbo, Maleficent 2 and Artemis Fowl that I see under-performing.

I kinda wished they had just gone the lion king route with dumbo and had the humans just be ambiguous, but hey.

I think with Dumbo they're actually trying to do something different from the animated movie; As opposed to Aladdin and Lion King, where it seems they'll be coloring "inside the lines", so to speak. Were humans ambiguous in the original Dumbo? It's been years since I've watched it. Looks like Maleficent 2 and Dumbo is their real chance this year to give us more original ideas expanded on from existing source material...for better or for worse.

I dont think they have much choice at this point. They have so many films every year that's it's no longer a matter of holding back films until the next year. If they do that then the next year will be over crowded. And since theyve bought so much of cinema's properties and so many large studios they are always going to have a bunch of films every year. And since theyve established this crowded release schedule as the norm their shareholders now expect and demand it. They are a victim of their own success. A similar thing is happening in the AAA video game industry.

Is that a rhetorical question? Because Aladdin comes out a month after Avengers and almost two months before Lion King.

Aladdin's major competition will be Detective Pikachu in it's third weekend and Godzilla opening the next week. I think it should be fine.

The hype for Godzilla dwarfs the hype for Aladdin
I definitely agree with you. I'm just saying that I see most people going to see Aladdin it's opening weekend. And I think this Genie controversy will only end up helping the movie. It could be top-heavy, and if it has good word of mouth, who knows how long it could prosper in June? The weeks during and after Godzilla will have parents that want to take their children and/or toddlers to something friendlier than huge monsters. Then by Godzilla's second weekend, Secret Life of Pets 2 will be out as well. Watching Aladdin's staying power will certainly be interesting.

I kind of think Aladdin is going to be screwed unless they release something that changes the current narrative. Pikachu opening before it has the possibility of having a good second weekend too. It's got a PG rating so parents will take their kids to it. Aladdin opens against Brightburn, which won't take a lot of its audience, but adults without kids or nostalgia might find the latter more intriguing. Then it has to deal with Godzilla the next week, and Secret Life of Pets 2 stealing it's main demo after that. On top of all that, Avengers: Endgame will still be in the mix and those usually have good legs. This might be the most interesting box office to follow this year. :funny:

Of all the Disney remakes and sequels this year, I think this will make the least.
