Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Why does this movie have to be a musical again? *Looks at the Beauty and the Beast box-office* Oh.

No seriously though, Jungle Book was wildly successful and it wasn't a musical.

Yet the 2 iconic songs from Jungle Book were used.

Like BatB, the entire Aladdin soundtrack is iconic.

The studio seems to be fast tracking these films and just like their live action Mulan, it seems like they underestimated the difficulties in finding the right actors for the roles.

This is not a live action Beauty and Beast situation, where there is an endless list of readily available white leads to auto tune. They have to take their time with Aladdin and Mulan.

Jeff SNieder thinks it's Mena Massoud

Me and a buddy were just discussing this movie this morning. About how we haven't heard anything as far as casting. I was telling her that I think they may end up postponing production. Weren't they still scheduled to shoot next month?

Naomi Scott is the girl who played Kimberly in the MMPR reboot, right? I wouldn't mind seeing her as Kimberly. Either her or that girl Jade Thirlwall.

Also, it doesn't surprise me that they were looking at Riz Ahmed or Dev Patel. Those seem to be people's go-to names when fancasting Aladdin. I guess we'll have to see what happens. We know more about The Lion King at this point.

Who's that?
Can he sing?
Can he dance?
Did he audition?

That the kid from Victorious? I liked him, he was good.

He's ridiculously hot, has the look and is the right age. Disney... come on. Pull your finger out.

I don't get comments like this. They had an open call and saw 2000+ people across the world.

Looks like maybe Disney is having trouble finding a bankable star or a "known" with enough experience for them to feel comfortable trusting such a project to.

But I don't buy for a second that they can't find anyone, period. They should easily be able to find someone who looks the part, can act the role and can sing well enough to make people forget about Emma Watson's lousy singing. Heck, there are several of them in the role in various Broadway/traveling production/s already cast as Aladdin, singing much harder songs and doing fairly difficult choreography seven times a week. Not to mention the people working at Disney as Aladdin, or in various musical shows based on the movie, etc. And I guarantee you there are music schools and performance colleges out there pushing nigh-perfect options at them.

They clearly aren't looking for that.

Not really what the article was saying.

To be fair, none of them are

a. the right age
b. Indian or Middle Eastern

There's plenty of Bollywood talent to sift through.

Isn't the easiest solution to focus on casting a well known for the Genie and select an unknown for Aladdin? Genie is the more interesting character anyway IMO.

It's one thing to say "We haven't found the perfect casting yet".

But the suggestion set forth in this article that there's no one of Middle Eastern/Indian descent who can sing and act and fits the role (When they're willing to look at Dev Patel as a possible fit, who will be close to 30 when this hits), and this is the reason they haven't cast it yet?

Ridiculous.

They're trying to find someone that is an "it guy and girl" right now, and I don't think there are that many with Middle Eastern backgrounds. I say just find two unknowns for Aladdin and Jasmine like they did with Neel Sethi. Make Jafar and the Sultan somewhat established Mid East actors, have Abu voiced by Welker again, have Iago voiced by a comedian that can do easily frustrated and *******, and a well known actor for Genie. Bam, you're done.

To be fair sometimes it takes a while to find just the right person.

Exactly. They saw 2000+ people across the world and yet they missed THIS guy? His name is being batted around Twitter and IG as the ideal pick so I can't work out how they didn't manage to lock him down for at least an audition.

Eh, I'm not too sure about that. Awhile ago there was many complaints from many bollywood/asian actors who could not get an audition. Many of them stating it was all just some PR stunt at the time. I do feel like they are gonna use this as an excuse to be like ''We tried, here is andrew garfield with a tan''...:oldrazz:

Urgh people are overreacting again. Disney have literally never gotten their live action adaptions wrong and people are blaming them for ruining a movie that hasn't even started production yet. It's like going off because JK Rowling is involved in the next Harry Potter movie and people are like "yuck what would she know about Harry Potter"

It's a good thing they are taking their time with the casting! And maybe Dev and Riz didn't want to do it or the scheduling didn't work out?

Disney are a mixed bag on their adaptations. Alice, Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast are pretty bad IMO. Jungle Book and Pete's Dragon were great.

I get what you're saying but... I think it's just because people LOVE Aladdin. It's a lot of people's favourite and no one wants it to be average. Naturally, we all have our pick of who would be best and it's never nice when that person isn't chosen and you have to just hope they got it right. It tends to be 50/50 with Disney adaptations - sometimes they get it spot on (like Lily James as Cinderella) and sometimes it's not quite there (Emma Watson as Belle) so I get why people are feeling worried.

My issue is that they're saying they've auditioned ALL these guys for Aladdin and yet they've not auditioned some really awesome fancast actors. However I have no idea how the audition process works, so maybe there's a logical reason.
